and bring in an organization with legal authority. BKD has stated that the Barnes administration is not cooperating. Of course Barnes is in disbelief.(Seems like staying on while the investigation is ongoing was pretty savvy of Barnes and the yes boys). So let's do what should have been the only sensible course of action to begin with- get an organization with subpoena power. Put those who may be questioned ponder perjury charges. Surely the state will investigate without much persuasion. Let's really have a thorough investigation, with no questions unanswered. And BKD saying the city isn't cooperating is our wakeup call. End the fiasco now.

Sorry- the sentence should have said "let those who may be questioned ponder perjury charges for dishonesty or lack of cooperation". The example of Wunder is a powerful motivator at this time.

taxpayer, I agree. I don't think many people actually had faith in this investigation anyway. Why would the city get to choose who they hire to investigate themselves? They've spent so long 'answering to no one' that it sounds like they don't think they have to answer to BKD, either. I wonder if Mick Wunder has been doing any talking on his end....enough to prompt a more 'official' kind of investigation???

It appears that BKD has an ethical and moral responsibility to elevate the NON cooperation of certain individuals to an oversight agency, such as the Kansas Attorney General’s office for further investigation. It also appears that the city attorney has a judicial responsibility, as an officer of the court in an advisory capacity, to caution the respondents on openness and truthful answers to the investigative agency. What advise has the city attorney given to city commissioners and city manager? As an employee of the city, her responsibility is working FOR the citizens and taxpayers first and foremost. Particularly in view of the successful prosecution of the former Mayor, which disclosed multiple discrepancies in testimony; and irregularities of how the city business was administered in the past? The best interest of the citizens and taxpayers by far outweighs the desires of the city commission, which will vote 3 to 2 to prevent any further investigation into the matter, for reasons of protecting their past actions and to prevent possible prosecution of themselves and the city manager?

Exactly, Que. Time to clear the air completely. If any legal wrongdoing occurred during the massive city debt accumulation, can't a law agency from the state if Kansas become involved? Let's do that now, and if illegalities did occur, then maybe Junction City can begin the process of recouping some of our losses.

Think BKD will report all contracts were legal. Think BKD will say no laws were broken in any of the deals (Wunder?). Think BKD will say all city commissioners and employees acted within authority. Think BKD will not make any statements concerning good vs bad decisions or ethical vs non-ethical. Think BKD was tasked for legal review. Atty General would have intervene if laws were broken. Think BKD will say nothing wrong with businesses getting contracts and wanting to contribute to the Opera House. Think if you're waiting for some big announcement you'll be waiting a long time. Think it was a waste of taxpayer money.

Taxpayer...when did BKD say Barnes was not cooperating?

I remember reading in the paper a few weeks ago (D.U. city commission mtg. notes) that BKD mentioned they had not been getting certain documents from the city as had been requested. Of course, it was then denied by Rod Barnes, who said all the requested papers HAD been turned in. That was the last I had heard about it.

So we just wasted $95,000? We hired them to do a legal review and they found NOTHING ILLEGAL? Bastards.

Let's hold judgement on what BKD found or did not find until BKD provides a full report on their investigation to the City Commission. I trust the report will be provided soon and will come directly from BKD rather than through Mr. Barnes for censorship. It won't be long.

This report needs to be available to commissioners before anyone else leaves town, and before Wunder is sentenced.

Well... ...and since Barnes and the Commissioners, who are to be investigated, chose WHO would conduct the investigation... ...I have every confidence that the report will be FAIR AND BALANCED... ...I believe that the report will be ABSOLUTELY factual and without flaw... ...I believe that no one will doubt the answers and discoveries made by BKD... ...and I believe that once THEIR report is made, everyone will be satisfied and that will be the end of it. Of course, I also believe in UFO's, Big-Foot and the lost Continent of Atlantis.

There are agencies that could investigate this whole thing and it is already paid for. The KBI or the FBI their fees are already paid for and no extra money would have had to be spent on an "independant firm". I am not saying anything against them they are just doing their job, however it would probably make the citizens of the community feel better about the whole investigation if a Law Enforcement agency had done this. One that has the ability to take any action nessessary once a violation has been found. Thats just my opinion and well you know what they say about opinions.

I believe the State and Federal investigators have been and are still investigating here. I also believe they will take action if needed but they may just walk away chuckling and shaking their heads.
