Does anyone know whatever happened to Bob Hathaway, lee county teacher? I wonder if he is still teaching or moved back to New York. What an excellent teacher.

THe

The last I heard...he was in Tennessee. ANd you are right...he was an excellent teacher!! I LOVED him as a teacher....I had him in 7th grade. ANd all through college and throughout my life...I have always said he is MY FAVORITE teacher of all time. I even told him that myself. He was very creative...and "hands on".....with experiments!! My favorite year of school was when I had him as a teacher!!

I had advanced reading with him and he scared us to death. No one in my class was happy to be in his room and we wondered why others liked him so. He berated us for mispronunciation of words and lectured us for the entire hour for either reading too fast, too slow, or not in the right tone.
One girl was simply sitting there listening to him and taking notes and he grabbed her pen and threw it against the front of the room because it clicked while he spoke. This boy I knew was screamed at for the entire class period because he said one word wrong in the sentence and he had to keep repeating it while this man screamed bloody murder in his face while doing so.
No offense to those who had a good experience, but he was not nice to anyone I knew and even my husband said the same. I guess our memories were more hurtful than happy.
I wonder if anyone else remembers the rants and going ons this man would go into that scared students? It was terribly frightening to see a teacher just go off suddenly.

He was a joke. His manner of teaching was horrible. I am surprised he held a teaching job as long as he did.

That man may have had good and bad qualities but I can remember being in the 6th grade and he threw a desk across the room cause a kid didnt know the correct answer. Now that im a parent I sure dont allow that kind of anger in my own home and I deff wounldnt wanna send my child to school to be treated that way. Both of my brothers had him too and they've told some pretty bad stories, but he also took them on field trips like riding helicopters and caving..but that doesnt justify his anger..what would have happend if a student threw a desk across the class room outta anger??

I had him for advanced reading in 6th grade. I would say he was a very bi-polar! One minute he would be fun and jokey and the next he would be very volatile and confrontational. I can remember going on a trip to Lee High and as we were getting ready to get off of the bus he began lecturing us on how to behave. I was simply smiling while he was talking and he lit me up. Told me to stay on the bus. I was the child that stayed out of trouble and tried to behave! After about a minute he calmed down and let me leave. I can remember being on edge every day, because you didn't know how he would be.

I would say he was a good teacher just could be a little nerve racking.

i have to agree with fred. he had moments when he wanted to joke and have a good time in the class, but he also could be pure hell. he was my 5th grade teacher and the only good thing i can say about his class is that i did learn a lot. but out of all of my years of school, his class was one of the ones i disliked most. now i do believe in disipline, but his methods were outrageous at times. one thing i hated most is how he would go completly crazy on a child in front of the other kids. i remember him calling us stupid and getting in 5TH GRADE students faces and yelling hurtful things to them. he would throw thing, smack his desk and other students desk. i remember one child particular he used to always give a hard time to. the kid never had much and that wasn't his fault. he would come to class with wore out clothes and most of the time had a bit of a bad smell. and hathaway would call him out on that in terrible ways. in my opinion that is just something an adult does not do to a child that can not help it.

reading was a nightmare in his class. he would give us magazines to read outloud that were way above our reading level at the time. if we mispronounced a word he would go insane...overall his class didn't affect me. his cruel words and actions never meant a damn to me, but i know he made some of those students feel like dirt. there is no chance that i would allow him to teach my children. he is a cruel hurtful man...i have actually hoped to run into him one day now that i am an adult. not to cause him any physical harm (he always was a wimpy guy anyways) but just to let him know that i disagree with his treatment of his students

if you read this hathaway then straighten up. you're not a drill instructor...you're a teacher

I had M. H. in Flawoods, and he was the best teacher, we all agree, that we ever had. I talked to students who had him at that pokey little school, what was it...Stickleyville, that had a real problem child as a principal-what was her name-Laster-maybe that made him upset, also his wife was very sick, and later died. Anyway- he was voted teacher of the Year for the entire state of Virginia in 1996, and given this honor by the Universityof Virginia in Charlottesville- no other Lee County teacher ever came close to being state teacher of the year, so he must of been vetted by lots of parents an peers and students, not just you fools on this website.. Go MR. H>!!!!!!!
