I have wondered about this for a good while and I was wondering if any 1 actually knew the answer.
How the county job of Director of Schools ever become a appointed job by the school board instead of a elected job by the county citizens?
And is it the same way in the rest of the state?

This is a law set up by the state and the counties can't change it. The state knows that people like you would put someone in there that wouldn't have a clue. Our pathetic county commissioners have tried to get it changed back but there are too many other counties that like appointing the director. Denise does a great job. If you don't like it, then come on down to the Utilities and me and you can have a man to man discussion about it.

You drive our utility bills up and she drives our taxes up. You make a good pair. I can't beleive they pay her $110,000 per year and pay for her to have a BMW when there are old people that barely makes it month to month that can't afford more tax or utility increases. I think they should put it back to electing the director. If they did, she would never have a chance. The people are smarter than you think and people are fed up with it.

The Director of Schools should be elected by the people, not appointed by a couple of friends on the school board. Many applied for the position at the time, including a professor at Carson Newman College with Director's exp and a Doctorate degree and he was overlooked for Denise who did not have the experience and was not qualified (holding only a master's in education). But, it's who you know. NOT, who is best for the children.

It can be changed and it is in the works to do so. Did you ever hear the story about her trying to fly from the old high school?

Sure did and I have heard about a whole lot more. The time she and Nancy where recorded on the phone plotting against news paper editor Mark Stevens, the profanity she used, made me sick to know that is what is running our schools. And now she preaches to the kids to respect others. She is just a dictator from what I hear. She uses intimidation tacticts to get her way and everyone knows it. I find it interesting that she lets her brother use the autobody paint booth to paint his cars after hours on his personal time. Did you know he also works for the school system? I would think that is wearing out our kids equuipment, equipment that the tax payers have bought. But I guess it is ok since he is her brother. What a real school board we have. Such a shame to lose Shadden, the only one that ever stood up against her.

I think it is sad that there were only two people here in the 2nd district that ran for the two open seats on the school board. Not much of a selection. They didn't even have to campaign. It will be interesting to see if either of them stand up to Denise or if they are more "yes votes" or rubber stamps for her.

I don't think Denise does a bad job compared to some of the garbage in other counties (especially Washington and Carter) but it should still be an elected position. Look what Elizabethton had to go through when they had a bad one: it took recalling three School Board members to get rid of him. That's ridiculous: just let the people vote.

How many kids has she suspended for breaking that rule?) Oh, and enormous amounts of liquor at the supervisor's "retreats". Don't forget campaign donations for hand-picked school board members who then signs her contract and approves her raises. Don't complain...you might get your power and water cut off.

Why hasn't something been done? Or, can something be done to change all of this? There are not many people happy with the director of schools in this county, but she is still there. Are her political ties that strong?

Wonder how she's gonna handle Love Chapel School falling into the sink hole? "Somebody run down to the BP and get me another 2 packs of Virginia Slims Light." (She doesn't want anybody to see her buying them.)

I see that Mark Stevens, Denise's favorite newsman, is back in the area...just took over the Elizabethton Star. Interesting times ahead.

She threatened the life of Mark Stevens. She has fired employees to put friends and relatives with less qualifications in their spots. She has made multiple bad decisions. She brags about being a dictator. But, no one has asked for her resignation yet. If it were anyone else, they would be long gone.
