We are driving to PC in a month or so....and i'm curious as to the best way to get there. Every map program that I try gives me a different route. Some has you taking:
US 78 from Memphis to Birmingham, then 65 south to Montgomery.
From there you pig-trail straight down through Alabama to Florida. Looks like lots of back roads.

Then there is I55 to Jackson MS, 49 to hattiesburg, then 98 to Mobile and hit I 10 on to FL.

Hell, I've even considered taking I55 all the was to I10 in Louisiana, then cutting straight across !!!

Who has the best route ???

Take the 2nd route you posted. Jackson to Hattiesburg to Mobile. Four lane highways all of the way.

Most people I know take the Jackson, Hattiesburg, Mobile route. We take that route to Destin and it takes us about 10 hours (2 kids = several stops ;) We thought about taking the Louisiana route one day just for a change of scenery. But we are usually in a hurry to get the hell outta Jonesboro so the shorter the route, the better!!

Take the 2nd route. I have been going to Destin/PCB for years using that route. Once I tried the Birmingham route just because mapquest said it was 30 minutes faster but they couldnt have been more wrong, lots of 2 lane roads were you get stuck behind logging trucks going 35 mph.

We tried the first route last year...78 to Brmingham, to Montgomery and so on. It was horrible.

Actually go to Birmingham and then cut thru Troy Alabama. Do not go thru Defuniak Springs and that routes. It's so slow.

go to Birmingham, be warned that the road from there to Montgomery is a wild ride, everybody wants to go fast.
look for an exit to 331, if you get to Nissan parkway you passed it, but its not too late, Nissan parkway will take you to 331, but there aren't any signs telling you so.
once you get on 331, stay on it, at Freeport you will cross Choctawhatchee bay, after that you come to I-90 or something (i never read the signs).
at the intersection there will be a welcome center on your left and a gas station on your right.
turn left, panama city is about 10 miles east.
ill be back to tell more later.

Don't know, but taking the Memphis-Jackson-Hattiesburg-Bi loxi route is 8 hrs. From Biloxi, take the coast road. It's a little slower, but the scenery is worth it. If you're in a hurry, take I 10.

Take the Birmingham route, it is 45 minutes to an hour quicker than Jackson-Mobile. Yes, you do have some 2 lane traffic south of Montgomery, but it is still quicker. We went to PC during spring break and I went both routes, made up an hour coming home by going through Birmingham.

Everyone always takes the Jackson way, but going that way makes you have to go through all the small towns in Mississippi and then drive the coast line in Florida to go to PCB. The best way to take is going to Birmingham. Go past the Memphis Airport and take the Birmingham exit! Going that route is all interstate. You can fly and not have to worry about slowing down for small towns! Just go down to Birmingham and on down to Dothan and from there it's a straight shot! You'll save yourself a couple of hours in time, less mileage, and the drive will be so much smoother! Also, while you're there, don't go eat at all the resturants that you know, go ask the locals where the best food is and they will direct you to the spots that many tourist don't know about but have much better food!

The question is, do you want scenery or short travel time? If you plan well, you can have both.

I go to PCB every couple months. My fav route is Memphis, Jackson, Hattiesburg, Mobile, Pensacola. Get on I-10 at Pensacola then take 331 down to the coast. I've tried them ALL, and this is easiest to me.

You CAN save 30-35 mins going thru Birmingham but you have several turns and if you miss one, or catch any traffic, you've just lost all your time. It is a 9-9 1/2 hour drive no matter what. You can not make it to PCB in 8 hrs like someone on here said, even if you drive 85 and have an continuous gas supply. Have a good trip!
