Ticks me off wrote: I pay attention while I grocery shop, in the parking lot and the people in line checking out. And it is the bags that I tend to notice, because I would like to have one. But when the time comes to buy one I just cant bring myself to spend that kind of money on a purse. But I notice alot of black women with these vanity purses, all Ive seen are the knockoff they carry. These knockoff bags are inexpensive and a fun alternative to the real ones, I mean unless you make a couple of million a year. But my point is if they were to sell them they wouldnt get much for them. So whats the harm. I'm fabulously rich, have the best of everything. What will I do when the market crumbles?? Well, get on welfare, food stamps, and carry my 8 "real" Coach bags simultaneously, all of my gold necklaces, my grill, driving my Caddy with my 8 kids in tow to Kroger. Then everyone can see that I'm rich. The things people value in life? Gosh, what really matters is people, rich relationships, enough money to go on vacation and buy your loved ones things they want, have good health, etc.

I do not pay any attention to purses. A bag is a bag is a bag.
Purse envy is a female thing.

The fake designer bags seen on the shoulder (or in the Wal-Mart shopping cart!)of every wannabe in Jonesboro are not 'purse envy' quality. Anyone who knows what an authentic designer bag looks like can spot a fake one across the room and isn't the least bit envious of somebody else's $40 purse.

Who cares if they are fake or designer? Do they carry your stuff better if they cost $1000? Most of them are ugly as hell anyway. I'll admit I've seen a couple of Coach bags I wouldn't mind having, but only because I liked the style and/or colors. The name didn't matter. I have never spent more than $70 on a purse, simply because I value more important things. Material possessions mean very little to me. Too bad that's not how the majority of society feels.

You do realize that "the government" isn't some magical place where money grows on trees, right? You do realize that if someone is WORKING and has to get a little help then they're actually really only getting back what they shoulda got before taxes anyway? I see nothing wrong with getting help if you actually work and just need a little extra to get by. THOSE people aren't the problem, as they too are paying taxes. As for the designer bags, you can get a knock off for even cheaper than $50 on ebay. You can get a REAL designer bag for cheap on there too. Maybe you don't know what its like to be a hardworking single mom who never treats herself. If she's a little naughty and buys a knock off bag come tax return time, thats HER business. How do you know that bag they're carrying isn't something they bought before they ever needed FS? Maybe thats the ONE thing they kept and it helps them feel better and reminds them that things will get better. As for WIC, you have to be pretty well off to not get WIC. Formula is like $30 a can for powdered. Babies are really expensive, that program makes a huge difference for a lot of people. Just being able to get the staples and forumula with it makes a huge difference, and MANY MANY women who recieve it DO work and pay taxes. Thats another case of... if the gvt didn't rape them every pay day, they'd probably not need it. Essetially they're actually paying for it with their taxes. Why don't you worry about YOUR life and not so much about other people's? Sound good?

Why don't you worry about YOUR life and not so much about other people's? Sound good? That may be true for a few people, but I doubt it's true for most of them. People with enough disposable income for a designer bag don't typically go from designer to welfare. They usually have money socked away for hard times, and I'm sure they would be too embarrassed to be seen in the welfare office. And by disposable income I mean the ones who can buy the stuff and not miss the money, not the ones who got paid a little more so therefore have "extra", or the ones who choose to skip paying a bill or two so they can have their bag. Most of the ones I've seen fall into the latter category.
