Was heading to Memphis tonight and I saw a huge sign off of 63 that said "The Pit". It's right around the Commerce exit. What is The Pit?

Must have something to do with the pond that was dug next to the four lane to get dirt for the overpasses on 63. Noticed the sign is inside the fence that surrrounds the whole thing.........

the owner says that he plans to rent it to people for events like car shows and stuff.
he claims that he chose the name because it would be easy to recognize and locate.
there is obviously a lot of work to be done, the fences and gates are up but that's about it.

I think it was a sewer pond, and if not one was close by and would seep into it. Nasty!!!
