The Gun Shop was taking a beating from Mega Sports who definitely had better prices and service. The other factor was Gander Mountain. I bought a very sweet SIG-229 .40 /.357 at The Gun Shop and at the time was the best price for a LE version with the Trijicon night sights. Although very slightly used, it looked factory new and came with two full cap mags since it was after the sunset provision of 2004. I guess there were some issues at that store later on because I was satisfied with their service at the time I made my purchase. I've done business at Mega many times and really do like their business model. Huge selection and very friendly "clean cut" staff. No 350 LB. tattoo sleeved face pierced clerks there! Kind of reminds me of the old Marshal Fields jewelry department.

I went in to their store only once when I lived in Joliet. I was ignored and when I did ask about purchasing an AR-15 type rifle, I was asked 50 questions. I walked out. Now A friend of mine told me about a new gun store, called RP shooting sports, that opened up in Joliet, behind the post office. After checking the gun shops web site, they have changed their name to RP shooting sports and they ARE running it out of a warehouse behind the post office now. RP Shooting Sport, LLC. 2093 Oak Leaf Street Joliet, IL 60436 815-725-GUNS (4867) I'd never do business with these clowns again. Try Dad's guns in New Lennox on Route 30.

I know this is an old listing but I just found it. The manager was a good guy, I worked with him at Rinks and Mega. The prices were in line with others and they always had great deals on used guns. Every special other I got from them was always a better price then any other shop. I don't know why they closed and we will probably never know why they closed but I will miss the shop.

Big Tony wrote: WOW! I know this thread is a year old, but I am surprised at this story. Just recently I drove past there, saw it was closed, and wondered "what happened?" Stephen, sorry for you loss. I was VERY close to being in the same boat as you, and did not even realize it until today. So ... by August 11th, 2008 the place was closed?! I took a gun in there to be sold on consignment in late June 2008. 10 days later at the start of July, having heard nothing, I went in there -- my gun was gone. But nobody could give me any details, which annoyed me. I talked with the management several times -- when did it sell, how much, and most importantly -- WHERE IS MY CHECK? After 3 weeks of this, I finally threatened to call the ATF, and quoted ATF regs to them specifically about the paperwork they are required to keep for every sale. It is completely unacceptable that a shop does not have this information readily at hand. Don't give me any BS about "well, it takes time to do all the paperwork, we've been backlogged, etc., etc." If you sold the gun, you are required to fill out form 4473 AT THE TIME OF THE SALE. I had a very bad feeling about this place. Finally, after numerous conversations and threats of ATF investigation and a letter from my attorney, I got a check from them -- the 1st week of August, 2008. I had NO IDEA until just now how close I came to not getting anything from these jerks. You guys are right about Mega Sports, too -- I just got a very uneasy vibe when I went into that place. I'm sorry, but if you run a business, maybe you should act like you actually WANT people to do business with you? Instead of being smug, indifferent, and rude? I moved here from Ohio in 2008, and I cannot BELIEVE what a retarded, backwards-ass state of affairs the gun shops and attitudes towards gun ownership are in here. Compared to Ohio, being a gun owner in northern IL is like moving to a 3rd world country.(I am crossing my fingers for you good ole boys down in southern IL, hoping that things are a little more ... sensible ... in your part of the State.) Oh, btw -- the Plainfield Gun Shop STILL has a website with listings of guns for sale. No info about them closing or having a new location -- same address, same picture of the storefront. Nice. If anyone has a suggestion for a GOOD gun shop in the area, do tell. Also,@ Glad (or anyone)-- I'd be curious to know "where" you got a transfer done for a reasonable fee. Gander Mtn quoted me $75 OR 10% the price of the gun, whichever is higher, so I walked away. Mega Sports would not give me a straight answer, told me "it depends" and also that any such transfer was strictly approved on a case-by-case basis by the owner, and often he would refuse to do a transfer depending upon the "circumstances." Sheesh. What do you need to "approve?" The gun I am choosing to buy? ME? Forget it buddy. If I have a valid FOID, it's none of your business what I choose to buy, or "who" I am. Either you want to make an easy $25-35 just to sign for a delivery and fill out one simple form, or you don't. My shop in Ohio was still doing this for $20 when I left, and would offer free range time to test out your new gun when you picked it up (provided you bought ammo there.) They earned my business that way, and many other people's as well. After the great experiences there, it was no question that I would always go there for ammo, supplies, or a "new" gun purchase before I even bothered to look online for deals from out-of-state dealers/collectors. *Sigh* Okay, I'm done with my rant. Stephen, you have my sympathy. WellI don't know, but I've never had a problem at Mega. Other places I've gone to is Rinks and they seem OK. MC Sports in Louis Joliet mall has some firearms, but not a great selection. I've never been to Down Range Sports in New Lenox so I can't say how they are. I've heard that Freddy Bear in Tinly is good. Don't know if that helps.
