Proposed bill: Pass drug tests or lose benefits

Full story: York Dispatch

Some of Pennsylvania's poorest residents would have to submit to random drug testing to receive monetary subsidies for groceries, housing or any of their other expenses if legislators approve a bill introduced by a local lawmaker.

about time!
If you don't want to be drug tested you don't have to. You just won't get welfare anymore. The amount of the testing will be offset by the savings of not paying users.
We can no longer afford to keep the welfare program going. Increases in taxes to pay for it simply create more need for welfare. Time to wean the people off the taxpayers teet. This would be a good start.

I don't mind giving people a hand up. However, when you have 3 generations of a family all on the dole and none have worked a day in their lives? Time to rethink.

Perhaps we should have a spelling test for voting. If you can't spell "teat", and you don't know the proper pronunciation of that word is "tit", then you don't get to vote.

What would you do about the many people who need assistance because of their medical problems, who would not pass a screening test because of drugs which are legally and quite appropriately prescribed for them?

Because it's cheaper to give food stamps to 500 families that need to feed themselves than it is to imprison 1 person who steals food from the supermarket.

Besides, you don't want to be around when some people steal from the supermarket. The security guards see a guy with shrimp down the front of his pants, and they start perforating everybody in sight with their sidearms.

Why would this not already be the law? Let some scofflaw get food stamps and cash assistance all the while smoking weed. I already know of a person doing this. This person is on welfare and this person smokes weed on a daily basis. This governmnet is a joke.

This is a wonderful idea....but I strongly feel that since what's good for one should be good for the other...and all government/state employees should also be randomly tested. Why not? It's high time that people who are in public service to be held accountable to those they serve.

Perhaps you should have to be tested on reading comprehension in order to post on topix? The article stated they would test for marijuana and cocaine said nothing about prescription drugs.

It's the welfare kids that will suffer more when their so-called "parent(s)" get kicked off for drug use. I'm sure the kids don't receive that much of the intent of the process anyway.

Perhaps a bit of scientific comprehension might help you.

The prescription pain killers novocaine and procaine cause you to fail a drug test for cocaine because they are, in fact, synthetic cocaine. Protonix, a drug used to treat acid reflux, will cause you to fail a drug test for marijuana.

Under the US Constitution, people in this country cannot be subjected to search without a warrant. That warrant is only issued if the cops convince a judge that there's good cause to suspect something will be found, and it will be specific as to what is to be searched, and what is expected to be found.

The cops can't even give you a field sobriety test under the "implied consent" laws unless you are driving a car AND you show other signs of impairment.

We need to protect our constitutional rights. Without them, we might as well be living under the Taliban

Clearly there are many generations that have abused the system!! Besides testing them....have them do community service work - say like 32-40 hours to EARN the aistance IF they are not born with a profound disability or honestly disabled during life!!
I think many of us have seen people that are "labeled" disabled and still manage to lift, carry, or perform as you and i have to inspite of our aches and pains !
How many good citizens we know that are working a full time job at just a little over minimum wages and clearly could use some "free" assistance...but are denied because "they make to much" !
Sadly there are those that get their loaded benefits card each month....and give it to someone else to use in exchange for ???$$$, drugs, etc !
they always seem to find ways around the system!!!

I totally support drug testing for all recipients of welfare, if you do not pass too bad, my wallet does not care….. I don’t care about how it will hurt the “kids”; the drugie welfare parent or parents should have thought about this prior to testing “hot”…. Don’t worry, anybody who is legally on a prescribed drug by a physician will be ok as the law will provide for that BUT many will try and use this as a excuse on how it will hurt the kids… When is enough enough, these lazy welfare drug induced slobs of society JUST collecting my and your money to buy drugs leaving their perish kids without, no different that it is now….

Look, it’s time for some REAL Change in Harrisburg. NOW is the Time with an all Republican Legislators and Governor. Property owners need some relief NOW.

- Pass legislation to repeal property tax and replace with a higher state sales tax on all items, services and purchases to fund our school system. That way everybody pays from Welfare Recipient to Corporate President. NOW that’s Fair……

- Take all taxing power away from the local school boards.

- Reduce all Welfare Funding by fifteen percent [ 15%]- the taxpayer has long been forced to make due with much more than a fifteen percent [ 15%] reduction in their household - TIME for the Welfare Freeloaders to feel the pinch too.

- STOP all funding and services to ALL Illegal’s…..

- The list could go on forever BUT this would be a Great Start….

Will the all Republican Legislators and Governor do this or anything close to this, Probably Not as they are to much of a P U $$ Y to do so, they do not want to hear all of the outcries from the Liberals and Freeloaders - WHY do the Right Thing by the taxpayers who are footing the bill for all of the wasted social programs spent. Heck over one-third of the state budget goes to Welfare.

The Time for Change is NOW….

Sounds like you speak from experience. Thanks for the scientific comprehension. Smack down successful! If a drug test constitutes a search, then why is an employer allowed to give me a drug test prior to hiring? Shouldn't the Constitution protect me from that?

I think the self righteous rethugs that come up with these fascist ideas should all be drug tested. They should also have to pay for their own health care and should lose all benefits once they leave office.

Requiring drug testing of those seeking assistance from the state is UNCONSTITUTIONAL . The 4th Amendment protects people from illegal searches .
