Small town. Backwards. Very limited retail. The schools are bad.

The "old timers" do not want to move forward. By not moving forward a lot of good people left, and a lot of lower class people moved in.

There are about 12K people in and around the town. There is only one fairly small grocery store. One very over priced department store, and a so-so hardware store. No place for entertainment - movie theater, bowling, ect.

Kids often vandalize area subdivisions, and schools as a source of entertainment. Crime and drug use are on the rise.

I completely agree with Cajun 5. More business and more Police Officers are needed to get this town where it needs to be.

Racist police officers
No justice for thiefs embezzelers in volunteer organizations.
No forward thinking individuals in our city offices so no retail shopping, grocery stores that sell past dated food and a city councel that thinks this is price you pay fo small community living....
oh so this must be utopia.......consider Taylor they have a WAL Mart besides that's where most of my taxes go since ELGIN CIVIL SERVANTS don't need my money....

How are the Police racist, is it because they arrest the whites along with the blacks and hispanics? Racism is the card that gets played when uneducated people dont have anything else to throw.

I will not speak on the police being racist, but I will say this......If the police were a stronger force in Elgin, much of the crime would be taken care of and Elgin would be a little bit better of a place to be.

Unfortunately the Police have to have the support of the Community before they can be a stronger force. Without the support their hands are tied because the only people that say anything are the ones who are being "mistreated" because they were arrested. There are bad apples in every Department, however in the smaller ones their just easier to spot. I say one crook in two years isn't a bad Department. The other Officer who recently MAY have made a poor decision was made an example of to silence the cries of the Criminals who were raising stink while all the sheep agreed because they did not know any better.

Anonymity, I agree with you 100%! There are "bad apples" everywhere. I just wish that the citizens of Elgin, and the police department in this community would pull together more and really take a BITE out of crime! In my opinion, the only way anything is ever going to change here is when a large amount of people start really getting involved in a POSITIVE way. Be that fighting crime educating children, gaining retail, or anything else.

Cajun that definently hits it on the head, for some reason a large majority of this town choose to remain silent and allow things to go by the wayside. Until the majority of law abiding, hardworking honest citizens take this community back the Police will have to straddle the fence to keep both sides happy. I know a large majority of the community supports them and wants to see positive enforcement, however until they band together and state that fact nothing will be done.

Informed I partly agree with you. I have seen it, you understand that once the arrest is made, the sentencing and release is out of Law enforcement's hands. There are plenty of Court/Prosecutor judgments that completely piss off the Police, because the penalty should have been much stiffer. Bastrop County Courts are notorious for giving sex offenders probation on first offenses. Trust me I get sick and tired of seeing felons walking around freely like they got good sense, however until our nation of complacency realizes the harm its doing to its self it will still be acceptable for the court system to take the best plea it can get, which I must say usually goes better for upper white class. I say the US needs to deport all felons, I don't know where but I'm sure some place could be found.

If you are the type of person who gets involved in community activities then Elgin is fine. There are things to do if you look for them. If you want to sit on your butt and complain then Elgin is probably not the place for you.

There is very limited retail, but that is not because we are backwards. It is because Elgin has only been over 10,000 people for a few years. The demographics did not support major retail. Now we are in a recession. Retailers are not building.

As for the police....We have a new Chief who has made great strides in the PD. Community support is the only way that we can improve the department. If you want to help join the citizens police academy. There is a new one starting in a couple of months.

The bottom line, Elgin is what you make of it. If you want it to be a small town where you can have a great group of friends and lots of activities to participate in, it can be that. If you want it to be boring and bad, bad, bad, it can be that too. Depends on weather your cup is half full or half empty.
