it's the least they can do considering the situation. In the article, there was the possibility of a class action lawsuit against the state concerning their neglect of the bridge.
Good. I hope their Empire feet are held to the public fire. As much as I am not a 'what if' or 'what would've happened' person, the situation does bring these questions up. What would've happened had that bridge failed at the height of the regions' tourism season? How would New York explained away lives needlessly ended through mismanagement and outright negligence? I doubt that all the political manuevering in the universe is going to bail those bastards in Albany out.

This bridge deterioration and subsequent closure was planned and orchestrated. It was planned for a time when the impact to tourism and commerce would be minimally effected.
Then, in the midst of the fingerpointing and subsequent investigations, some of the "change" that was promised by Obama will be inacted. Watch out Congressional District #23. "Change" will come!!!!

Did anybody else notice how close the proposed ferry is to the bridge. It looks like it would fall on it if it does collapse.
I hope they hurry up and do it because more people could loose their jobs in the interim between the ti ferry closing and this one opening. This needs to be done immediately...and its not.

Right, Obama orchestrated the closure of a bridge in a powdunk town. Get off Fox News ... and move to Crawford. Maybe Bush will hire you to cut his brush ...

For the winter, we could take a Navy submarine out of mothballs and go UNDER the ice to Vermont. I think they hold 300 people.

Why don’t the governors of New York and Vermont petition the federal government for some of the stimulus money (787 billion has been set aside) to replace the bridge? After all, didn’t the Obama administration say stimulus money was to be set aside for shovel ready infrastructure jobs throughout this country? And if replacing the bridge isn’t shovel ready I don’t know what is! Replacing the bridge is beyond shovel ready – it’s an emergency and one whose repercussions could turn this part of the country into the equivalent of the dust bowl days during the 30s in the mid-west. The time to think about it is over. They have to act now. They should also fire all the A-holes responsible for this fiasco. I know several people who have put their homes up for sale and are getting ready to move out of here. One family, living in Port Henry, was highlighted on channel 3 news. And a ferry is no long term solution either. With our crazy weather patterns and all the fog created by IP disaster is sure to happen.
Well

Rediculous: Maybe they can/will, but the new bridge is pretty far from "shovel ready". Since all that money was set aside, people with projects that were breaking ground have applied for it, and it has been dispersed (largely). The bridge could be "shovel ready" in six months. Part of NY's share of the monies are unallocated too, we have been quite slow to spend it. There will likely be some question about how much each state will pay for also.
