I did everything I could to keep them content but there was only so much of the same thing that they would tolerate. Then they got into your meth and it was all over.

While you stayed, Lil Sunshine, quite a few more have left, because the tourist industry abused this place so much. The tourist industry supports children defecating in hot tubs while their parents break into owners closets. Drunks dance on home owner's counter tops until they break. Teens urinate off of balconies into pools. All this is routine, normal behavior now and it happens hundreds of times a week, not just once in a while. Dogs bark through the night, and are not cleaned up after by their tourist owners. 25 and more people crowd into a house designed to sleep 10. And rental companies do NOTHING. You could still make a decent living in tourism without destroying the quality and character of this place. But you choose to say that nobody gives a "rats ass...." That's basically the same thing said to me many times at numerous town meetings I HAVE been to. Nobody cares a rat's ass about anything here EXCEPT the tourist dollar, and tourists know that -- so they treat our properties and neighborhoods with NO respect. And that's why it does indeed suck here.

I cannot stop laughing. You state rental companies do nothing...Im sorry but I beg to differ. You must have had a bad experience and the wrong management company. Am I the only one that thinks this is bonkers? I am not here to change your views on this lovely sandbar. I could care less that you hate it here. You miss read my first post. You claim that I dont give a rats ass about this place and what happens here. I told the OP that "We didnt give a rats ass about him" Just wanted to clear that up. In closing, not everyone here is uneducated and redneck as you and your buddy would love to think. Too bad that there isnt a grammar check on your computer. You could use one...so quick to judge others is a bad trait.

In the two different businesses my wife and I are in, not a day goes by where we don't have to deal with the destructive abuse of tourists. Broken coffee tables, smashed stove tops, nice furniture and furnishings taken outside and left in the weather, just to name a few in addition to those already mentioned. This happens consistantly and steadily across over a dozen management companies with whom we have worked. So it is not just one bad company. We have noticed that usually the folks who defend or deny the bad behavior tend to live further away from the beach itself. I'm just tired of having to step around dog poo on my way to the beach, having to call the cops at 3:00 am for a loud party near by, and having drunks turn around in my drive, tearing up my mail box and my shrubs. I'm pretty sure Lil Sunshine, that if this were happening to you at your property, that you would not like it. I do not wish to insult you in any way; I just wish you might be able to acknowledge that these problems are REAL for many of us, and that we CARE about OBX. Weather it is a forum like this, or a town meeting, I have found that many people here just react by telling people like me and Not Surprised that you don't give a "rat's ass" about them. I still believe it would be possible to have a healthy tourist trade WITHOUT tolerating the abuse. Evict the worst abusers. Sure, we'd lose a minor amount of business at first, but it would soon build back up with a more appreciative crowd. It is possible to improve all this, but not likely as long as you, the life-long resident don't give a "rat's ass." The people like me and Not Surprised give up and we do leave year in and year out. And OBX gets a little worse each year. Soon, it'll be just like Ocean Shitty, MD.

These people must live in a rental heavy neighborhood. You chose the wrong place to live. If you don't like your job cleaning rental houses, get another job. Go back to Ohio.

Thanks Frank, I will. This forum has cemented my decision to leave. But you must admit, your post does prove that there are certain areas of OBX you are willing to let get pretty bad, for the sake of the tourist dollar. All I have been saying is that we could all still make a nice living, and yet enforce some basic standards of human decency, just like I expect when guests come to my home. After years of fighting to change this culture, I know it will never happen. And it's very sad to me that those neighborhoods you are most willing to let go down are the same ones nearest the beach itself. Thanks to all who have read this thread.

not surprised wrote: <quoted text>No, dumbass I'm not from another country. Why is it that when somebody speaks negative of the obx everybody gets defensive. I honestly feel that everybody thinks like I do but just won't come to reality. There is no life there. The outerbanks totally sucks and I know because I live there for 10 yrs. There is plenty more to life. whoa, I think you need antidepressants, it's not the area, it's definitely you! Ask your doctor if Prozac is right for you!

the tough know-it-all from big-city Chicago who "showed us hicks" how to run a Tourism Board for the last 12 years.
To everyone in the "powers that be" who thought she was God's gift to tourism--eff you all! You brought her here and made the almighty dollar off her tenure here.
I say this because I see both sides of this thread's argument.

are like.....well, you know. Life is full of challenges - get a grip. Did you think you would get sympathy here? "Disgusted" If you are unhappy with your businesses that rely on the tourist dollars, then step aside and let someone else do the work. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and then you probably wouldn't be. That's why its called a "job". Government can't do anything about behavior. That's why we have jails.
