Our kid was having trouble with seventh grade and we took him to Sylvan. The math teacher didnt like it but it aint the math teachers job to get the child an education. The teachers are doing things that take away from their job. They dont have time to give individual instruction which i know some need.

Is this the reason the test scores are so low?Of course the teacher didn"t like it.They didnt want anyone to know what level these kids are really on.What is the math teachers job?

Education starts at home. The schools only assist in the process.

I agree 100% So if we as parents do our jobs why can't the teachers do there job? Most of them get upset when a child has a concerned caring parent, and when a child has a concerned caring parent the teacher doesn't know how to act.

I am sorry..But your wrong...Why the heck am I paying teachers salaries.
I dont know about you...But i can go to jail if my kid is not at school..But its A.O.K. if the kid is receiving a "second class education" and can not test at his/her grade or maybe even 3 grades behind, that is just fine with our school board.
IF my child was testing at 2 or 3 grades behind where he/she is at ..Its time to talk to an attorney..And NOT a jamestown attorney !

And for the record, home-schooled children test 'ABOVE' their age equivalent . Why is that, you ask ?
Too many kids in the class..Maybe...But i know for certain, they have teachers that have NO business teaching.

As an educator myself, I would love it if parents took their children for extra help if they needed it. It doesn't matter how a child masters a skill. What matters is that the student has every opportunity to master that skill as possible. With the stress put on teachers now to pass the TCAPS, the teacher should be happy that her scores will be up. Unfortunately, children do need more than the public schools can offer sometimes. Teachers and students alike have been put under a tremendous amount of pressure. I believe that pushing as hard as we are is taking the childhood away from students myself. I want my own children to get an education so that they can have the best opportunities in life, but I believe too much pressure sets a child up for failure. Anyway, my point is that as teachers, we should do all we can to help a child succeed. As parents, we should partake in that responsibility. It takes a community to raise a child.

I believe the schools in Fentress county do a much better job than most schools in big cities.Too many kids in each class is surely part of the problem..I also believe, deep down inside, that when God was taken out of the schools, and corporal punishment, schools have went down hill fast.It will not get better,I am afraid, unless we put God back in our schools, and also corporal punishment..Since I do not see that happening,we have a real problem..I kinda like the idea of school vouchers. It may help some.Just a thought.

These schools are horrible SFE couldn't get any worse but common sense will tell anyone that when God is taken out of anything it goes down hill. That is whats wrong with America.

I worked for a few years as an elementary teacher. The working conditions were not the best and the pressure was great to make the scores on standardized tests. I had friend with the same education that I had making thousands more than I did. I finally quit and started making more money as an executive assistant. Unless you've tried teaching, you have no idea how hard it is.

I think it is time they turned the classrooms back over to the teachers and let them teach school instead of spending all their time doing paperwork for the state. They send kids to court for crazy things because they are not allowed to discipline them in the classroom. The men and women that are called teachers have spent years in college learning to teach so let’s get the bureaucrats out of the way and let them teach. The courts need to be there to hold parents responsible when they don’t send their kids to school.

I could go on and on but it's useless. My response to you is that unless u have a 9th grade student that does not no how to add and subtract and as a parent has been told over and over not to worry that they can use a calculater then u dont no what its like being a parent that does care. Some people will take up 4 anything
