I heard there was a mountain lion somewhere in Jamestown today seen dragged an 8pt buck off. Someone supposedly took pics of the whole thing. Anyone know where this happened? I heard they brought 4 of them in to take care of the coyotes (who were coming in after the deer). Now, the mountain lions are coming in after the deer instead!

I don't believe that any group brought mountain lions in to take care of the coyotes. I'm sure that would be a DEC responsibility and it would have been highly publicized. It just doesn't sound like something that any governmental department would do. Mountain lions are more dangerous than coyotes. I just watched Cable 8 News and there was nothing on there about it. Whoever said that they have pictures should make them public.

I find this very interesting considering that something grabbed a duck out back of my yard, more than once. It had a guttural growl, I mean not like some lil' nasty kitty, raccoon, whatever. What threw me off was it went up a tree when we went out there. I'd love to see some evidence of a mountain lion!

I heard a rumor about this as well, but last week in Busti. Same thing, draggin a 8 point deer... someone took pictures... brought in to take care of coyotes.
I think it's just that, a rumor. |

Go to snopes.com and you will see that these pics and stories have been floating around the internet for years. I got the email like a year ago showing pics of a mountain lion outside some ladies sliding glass doors and the story that went with pic was it was Panama NY. Turned out to be just a hoax.

You people are ridiculous. There are coyotes and mountain lions ( which are the size of a dog) around here. I have see pics of Mountaian Lion in Busti, and seen coyotes here in Jmst. At my back door enterance!! They will not bother you, if you don't bother them. I saw a deer and fawn cross Steel st. and go to the tracks. They are coming to town b/c of too much development. This is the way it is.

As I said, go to snopes.com . Then click on fauxtagraphy, then click on animals, then scroll down till you get to mountain lion at back door. It will tell you where the photo's are actually taken and will tell you how the photo's have been on the net for years with the caption that its in pennsylvania or new york. Ive gotten the same email with those same photos twice, once was panama and the other time was busti. Believe what you want, just trying to help you out.

Maybe its about all the old ladies in town trying to score with young men. I have seen old bitches in the mens room with a young buck in their mouths.

1 A cat this size would leave some type of evidence behind like tracks, scat or maybe even fur. Not once at any of these “mountain lion sightings” have tracks ever been found. The animal being preyed upon left tracks. Then in some cases, there are tracks from other prey animals, but not lion. Maybe we have flying mountain lions. |

I do have the picture as proof. I'll try to get it for you guys later. It was taken on a tree cam in Busti on 9/19/09.
The tree cam belongs to a family friend of my best friend, so very reliable source. |

I'd like to see it. |

I highly doubt the DEC would introduce a predator that has been known to attack humans into the populated southern tier districts. If a mountain lion is really in the area it could have gotten here all by itself.
There are way too many deer in Chautauqua County, I see them often within the city limits. They have no predators to speak of here and the food (flowers and shrubs that people landscape with along with the food that well meaning but wrongheaded people leave out for them) is plentiful. Reducing their numbers is a problem that will need to be addressed eventually, I believe. I just hope the chosen solutions won't cause a firestorm of controversy from those who are too kindhearted to see reality. |

Something no one has mentioned are bobcats. They DO live around here (I have seen them) and their cries are haunting! However, they are the size of a very large tom cat and couldn't take down anything near the size of a deer - they could however kill your ducks, chickens, and the like. Their sounds could be mistaken for a mountain lion. It wouldn't suprise me if mountain lions had been released - "they" released elk and didn't make it well known (I have video of an elk with a radio collar around its neck - I took the video myself)...

Yes, it is quite plausible that it could be a bobcat, nasty lil cuss probably yanked up these ducks right here around Chadakoin Park. I know I heard what I heard and it was NO sassy cat or raccoon choking the life out of a duck and growling like all hell. Interesting to say the least! |

1 Bobcats can kill deer. They usually only hunt smaller game, but they have been known to take down deer. Quick link if you don't believe me. http://www.23mm.com/deer/bobcat.cfm They average twice the size of a normal tom cat. About 25-30lbs. |
||||
It's true. That is a mountain lion killing a deer. But it happened in Texas, not NY or PA. http://www.buckmanager.com/2009/05/21/mountai... |

A mountain lion's tail is quite long, while a bobcat's is short and stubby. Last summer, my daughters and I were catching crayfish in Stillwater creek in Kiantone when I saw something large swimming across the water. It didn't notice us until it got to the other side. When it did, it was somewhat hidden by foliage. It looked at us for maybe five seconds and calmly walked into the woods. I saw a long tail and protruding cat-like shoulder blades. It was the size of my four year old boxer. Unfortunately, it was dripping wet, making it difficult to discern the color of it's fur. If not for my daughters, I probably would have checked for tracks. I'm not saying it was a mountain lion, but I'm positive it was not a coyote, bobcat, fox, dog, etc. The climate here is perfect for this kind of animal and it wouldn't surprise me if a few mountain lions have strayed this far. I read somewhere that one was spotted near Syracuse last year also.
