These events triggered the immediate migration to Nauvoo, Illinois, which quickly became even bigger than Chicago. The Mormons had previously left Ohio because of tensions and difficulties over banking issues. It was obvious that they had problems with the locals where-ever they went, so in the mid 1840‘s, Brigham Young took a large group west to the then barren and desolate Salt Lake Valley, where they have thrived for the last 160+ years. In hindsight, it is obvious there were provocations or wrongs committed on both sides, and a more fair and balanced study of the fuller account of history will give greater clarity as to why the Mormons saw, and still portray, things all-together differently than did the Missourians. Neither side felt they could get justice, and the feeling of superiority coupled with the inability to communicate and really understand each other then, to a great degree, still exists to this day. Not being able to coexist peacefully sadly caused division, separation, and eventually violence. Issues occurred to a big degree because of a lack of trust and mutual respect. Both sides choose to see the other as bad, and often purposefully ignored, degraded, or alienated their seeming opponents. Hopefully we can use hindsight to not once again repeat history and these kinds of attitudes. Another issue was the sentiment that the land was God given as a rightful inheritance to the Mormons, which did not sit well with the locals, and they were told they could obtain it either by purchase, or by blood. Thankfully, the idea to obtain it by blood has virtually been ruled out, but by fair purchase and transparency should offend no one, if in fact that occurs. May we all do unto others, as we would have them do unto us. Thus ended the Mormon attempt at that time, for a Missouri Zion or heaven on earth. The prophesies still stand that the land of Missouri is appointed and consecrated for the gathering of the saints, and is the destined head-quarters and eventual resting place for the establishment of a New Jer USA lem before the second coming of Jesus, the center place being Jackson County, Independence. The announcement of a new Temple to be built in Kansas City churns old feelings of desire for the lands of Missouri. Today, worldwide, Mormons number 13,000,000+. On June 27, 1844, over 1,500 Missourians were headed to Carthage Illinois the day Joseph Smith was murdered, but according to historian Charlie Peniston, they turned around at Shelbina, Missouri after hearing he had already been killed. Three days before Joseph was killed, the brethren in Nauvoo asked him what to do with the cannon, he replied that they should hide it in the basement of the Nauvoo Temple. Among other things, the Masonic influence incorporated into the Mormon temple ritual was seen as one of the major factors leading to this violence, because the Grand Lodge of Illinois had written Joseph and asked him why he was initiating women into the ritual. He never responded. Today the “OLD SOW” cannon is on display in Salt Lake City, Utah in the Museum of History and Art, next to Temple Square. On November 30, 2000, Mormon leader Hugh Pinnock told Chillicothe Mayor Jeffery Curtis Foli that the “OLD SOW” cannon would be returned home to Chillicothe. Many of today’s citizens of Livingston County had relatives that participated in these tragic events. The opportunity for healing and understanding past history is here for all of us if we wish to imagine and create a world of peace and tolerance. Without an appreciation for diversity, we as the human race, will never realize the fuller joy of human brotherhood. With this in mind, the cannon now stands as a symbol, not of conquest, division or war, but as an object of hopeful cooperation, unity and peace.

So, do you think if the cannon came back to Chillicothe it could symbolize peace, thus letting the citizens, the school board and the city council all get along?

I think bringing the cannon in Chillicothe would just be a reason for clueless TOPIX posters to accuse the city of raising taxes to bring it to Chillicothe and to accuse the school board for using the cannon to blow up a school building so they can build a new one. |

1 There will never be much harmony in Chillicothe because nobody has a job that pays enough for them to have a hobby, that is other than begrudging someone of what he has and how he got it. And so the act of trying to get somebody fired so he or she or their relative can have a job. Basically you either work for a government entity (including behind bars) or you ain't got a job that pays enough to get to Kansas City so you can start living. CHILLICOTHE IS A CEMMETERY WITH LIGHTS. Look around, see for yourself. |

1 Contrary to your belief, not everyone aspires to live in a large city. It is OK to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. My family and I make a decent living here. Not working for the government either. Believe it or not, we are not behind on our bills, we own our home (which is not and never was on wheels),and we have many hobbies that are not cheap. Occasionally we have to go to KC, but prefer St. Joseph for shopping, etc... Mostly though, everything we want is right here. That is why if I don't like something going on in our city government or with our school, I will complain, go to meetings and vote. If I wanted to live somewhere else, I wouldn't bother complaining, I would just leave. And hey, a cemetery isn't that bad, pretty scenery, quiet, and possibly surrounded by loved ones, but there is sometimes an occasional snake. |
