Why are cars required to have a specific type bumper, soft dashboards, airbags, etc. etc. and motorcycles do not. Riding a motorcycle is like tying yourself to a whipping post or nailing yourself to a cross, no religious pun intended.

Martin L. Litwiller, 45, probably died of severe head injuries after his motorcycle struck a tree, said Rindge Police Chief Michael Sielicki. Sielicki said Litwill was not wearing a helmet.

My condolences to his family!

I doubt it would matter much if he was wearing a helmet if he hit a tree...

riding a motorcycle is a hobbie millions share, and will continue to share, unfortunately things happen (as they do in all cases, shapes and sizes) but comparing it to being nailed to a cross is ridiculous. my heart goes out to the family.

My point was that you are "TOTALLY" exposed when riding a motorcycle and sort of an accident waiting to happen. They are hard to control, hard for others to see, offer little or no protection, and not wearnng a helmet is a bit of a death wish in my humble opinion.

Some people call them donorcycles . I have been riding for more than 35 years .Those of you who drive in a "cage" would never understand the reasons why we ride.Helmet or not most of the time it doesn't matter. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I QUOTE,
"They are hard to control", only if your on the wrong bike!

"hard for others to see", put down the F**KING cell phone,do what your supposed to be doing and look out for others!

"sort of an accident waiting to happen" this you must mean not testing old people on their driving skills

this was an accident nothing more and nothing less

how come no one has mentioned his 4 year old boy and thanked his family for his service to the country.

My condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.

People are saying that motorcycles are dangerous and people need to be protected, but still our children are riding school busses without seatbelts.....Hmmmmm

Ashby Man, Of course everyone feels for the family, regardless of how this happened. However, your "points" were a little odd, given the situation. Is a Triumph the "wrong" bike? Most bikes are about 1/4 the size of a car which makes them somewhat harder to see. Additionally, no senior citizen or cellphone was involved.

Barney,
I think they meant the wrong bike for the rider...example; I am 115lbs....I need a bike fit for me that I can safetly control and drive. I don't they thought that a Triumph wasn't as good as any other.

Compartmentalization: The Egg Crate Effect

The NHTSA relies on a concept called “compartmentalization” to ensure the safety of school bus riders. Closely spaced, high-backed seats with impact absorbing materials on the fronts and backs prevent children from being thrown far and hard in the event of a collision. Compartmentalization gives an egg crate-like protection by providing confined spaces that are constructed to cushion the blow in an accident.

Size and Structure of School Buses

Federal regulations require installation of restraints in vehicles based on their size and weight. Smaller school buses, those weighing less than 10,000 pounds, are required to have seat belt restraints. The NHTSA has ruled that small buses fall into the same category as passenger cars and trucks that are mandated to be equipped with safety belts. Regular school buses are heavier and provide better crash impact than passenger vehicles, thus eliminating the requirement of seat belt protection.

Lap Belts vs. Shoulder Harnesses

Studies show that lap belts have the potential to cause abdominal and head injury in children who are slammed forward in a crash. Three-point shoulder harnesses would be ideal for restraining children, but are impractical as there is currently no realistic way to install them on school buses. Window seats could be implemented with shoulder harnesses, but aisle seats provide no place to anchor the straps.

Better crash inpact maybe.....but I'm sure that (godforbid) a bus gets hit, say T-boned by a big vehicle, that throwing the children into each other and into the side of the bus is not a good thing, talk about the possiability of some severe head injuries. I'm sorry, I'll take lapbelts for my kids over nothing at all.

The "eggcrate" effect is only good in a front or rear collision......it is the side impacts that are going to hurt.
