Surely you're not condoning the action of the ex-homeowners, now thieves? Most, not all, of these people that are being foreclosed on, I feel nothing for becasue they knew they couldn't afford the house they bought when they bought it. Just had to have it no matter that in a few years their payments were going to skyrocket. They knew this, just wanted the house. Who did they think was going to pay the difference in mortgage payment in a few years?

Welcome out of the dark tas, now that you are out you will be able to see the enormous forclosure rate, the high gas prices, grocery prices, insurance costs, higher loan qualifications oh and btw...your paycheck is the same. What happened to the assistance that Bush was going to implement to help with the rising foreclosure rate? Heck, they just admitted that we are in a recession. Welcome again, to what some of us call the "end times". Have a great day.

Tas, look what you are saying. Blame the
buyed only. How about the greedy money changers who made the loan.Do you think they did not know the buyer could not afford the house? In my eyes they are more to blame than the dumb buyers.

Such a hot topic. I believe the blame should go both on the buyer and the bank. They are both idiots. Since when is ignorance an excuse? When I bought my house, I made sure that I knew what I was doing when I signed on the dotted line for that much money. I also know that in 5 years I will not be making enough to afford a mortgage that quadruples. The banks are also to blame for giving people loans that the bank knows they cannot afford. The old rule used to be that you could qualify for a home at 3 times your salary. What happened to that rule? I know someone on a teacher's salary (first year teacher) that qualified for an almost $200,000 home. Something is wrong with that picture.

On Second thought, if the government is going to come in and pass a bunch of laws to forgive home owners that got in over their head by changing their terms, lowering the interest rate, and even lowering the financed amount then maybe I should ditch my home and upgrade. Might as well be on the side of taking advatage of the system instead of being responsible and pay for those that don't do thier research and lack common sense.

You made your bed..

Of course they knew, over the past 10 years I have received they phone calls and mailers everyday. But I have yet to hear any stories of the, as you called them greedy money changers forcing people to sign these contacts. It’s is the responsibility of the buyer to know what he or she can afford. Don’t get me wrong I feel bad for these people because the lack of planning and research before buying, are now losing their homes. Of course some of these buyers looked buying a house as an investment, and like any investments some win some loss

This is why I made sure I had a "fixed" interest rate when I bought my house! We knew that we needed a payment that was consistent. I agree that some people were so anxious to get into a house that they didn't think ahead.

Repeat after me: "Any house that has a mortgage on it is not my house."

People get in the habit of calling the bank's house "my house" until they believe it. Then they get mad when the mortgage rules they signed go against them.

I am educated, employeed, and white also. Not sure what that has to do with anything though. I just lost my home as well. Taxes on my property almost doubled my mortgage payment, but my "educated white paycheck" is the same. Enjoy your vacation.

What does being white have to do with anything. I am glad you don't have any problems but let me tell you tragedy can strike at any moment and anyone, educated, employed or white can lose it all in an instant!

I agree with Tas somewhat. If people couldn't afford their houses they shouldn't have bought them.
I don't think it's the fault of the mortgage companies! They are trying to make a profit & if buyers want to buy a house they can't afford - who are they to tell them no?
I DON'T feel sorry for the people who are losing their homes. It's called GET A SECOND JOB - or a third one, or whatever it takes.
As for "Bystander's" comments - idiot! Yeah, high interest rates are "the end of times!" LOL
Why do some people insist the world is gonna end!? WHY WOULD YOU CARE? If the world was gonna end - could we do anything about it? NO

OK..heres a lesson for people..when you buy a home, just because the interest rate is low does not mean it will always stay low....so know ahead of time that your mortgage payment will increase over time, somtimes significantly...so dont buy more house than you can afford not if, but when interest rates go up....and so many people refinanced or got equity loans because of low interest rates and are now suffering because of it...buy the house you know you can afford when rates go up..and dont be greedy borrowing money that you cant afford to pay back! simple! ITS NO ONES FAULT BUT THE BUYERS AND HOMEOWNERS.....our house is paid for..has been for several years...its rare that we do not get solicitations by mail or phone to get a new loan at "all time low rates"...we say no..and so should countless other people..its all about greed and wanting to have more than you can truly afford.

As someone who was facing foreclosure (not my fault by any means), let me tell you that unless you have a crystal ball in your pocket, you can never tell what the future holds.

Don't judge these people just from a little story on the internet. You don't know the entire situation.

Hey Scott,

How about the person who CAN afford the house now and in the future and lose their jobs they have had for 10 years or more due to a bad economy. Yes ARMS loans are not the greatist idea, however not all of these situations are ARMS related. I think if you look at most of the foreclosures, a very small protion are adjustable rates and most of these people COULD afford the homes at the time.

Dixie Joe,

I am educated, white, and get a nice paycheck. I went with the fixed rate but still got slammed when the taxes on my property went up so high that my mortgage payment went up $300 a month. There went my summer trips but be sure to enjoy yours while you continue to hide your racism behind a screen name.

I don't think it's the responsible home buyers who have fallen on hard times that are completely trashing their homes when they leave them.

We've been house-hunting for 2 months and we've seen a lot of foreclosures. In a lot of cases you can tell the difference between someone who had pride in their home and lost it and someone who bought a home they couldn't afford and couldn't maintain it.

We’ve walked through homes that just break your heart. Growth marks for two or three children are on the door jambs in the kitchen showing years of love and life passed in this home that they’ve now lost forever. Hand painted murals in the children’s rooms and stenciled names on the doors. Hearts and flowers with the family name painted above the place where a headboard used to be. Countless little touches and hints of the family that lived there and is now displaced from the home they obviously loved. I just don’t see these people as irresponsible opportunists that bit off more than they could chew and are reaping the consequences.

Conversely, a lot of the damage being done to these homes is purely malicious. There was one home that it was clear the parents had given permanent markers to their children and told them to draw whatever they wanted on every wall in the house. The sinks and toilets were cracked and broken and fixtures had been torn off of the walls and ceilings and left on the floor with bare wires hanging where they'd been. We saw more than one house that the carpets and walls were so covered in filth that the owners couldn't have done that much damage if they'd purposefully rubbed dirt, oil, and feces into them for a week prior to vacating.

I'm not the type to judge if someone "deserved" to lose their home or not, but it certainly speaks to the character of the people who lived in these homes that they are maliciously destroying the place where they and their children lived.
