JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Jacksonville gun dealers have been keeping busy, saying more customers concerned by the city's crime are coming in to purchase firearms. More than 4,200 people in Duval County applied for a concealed weapons permit between July of last year and the end of June, according to state officials. Green Acres Sporting Goods owner Abie Farhat told Channel 4 that business is booming at his Westside sporting goods store and said that firearms are a hot commodity. "Especially the ones made for self-defense are doing real well. They're up 100 percent from last year," Farhat said. He said many gun owners tell him they're getting the weapons for safety. That mentality seems to be a bit of a trend across the city. On Monday, police said a would-be robber was shot by the man he tried to rob -- a man who was legally carrying a gun. "A lot of them want something to protect their homes. Either they had a home invasion or burglary," Farhat said. In order to get a gun, customers must fill out a lengthy questionnaire and wait three days. Farhat said the paperwork and waiting period are in place to make sure guns do not fall into the hands of criminals. Nonetheless, many people said they feel there are still plenty of armed crooks. "I think there's certain places that you shouldn't go at certain times of the night," said one resident. Also, guns aren't the answer for everybody worried about crime in Jacksonville. "I don't know how to use a gun and it does scare me. It is our right to bear arms and if you feel comfortable having a gun, then that's something you have to decide yourself," another resident said. Jacksonville police recommend that gun owners call police before using a gun, if possible. "Let us be the one on the frontline to go in and look for these dangerous individuals. Never try to take matters into your own hands," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson said. Police said of course people have every right to arm themselves, but they said people who do choose to keep a firearm should make it safe by having a trigger lock. |

I love the following comment;

ROTFL Remember an empty Glock is a useless Glock. You need more clips. I recommend 4 to 6. |

I read in the T/U that there are about 49,000 permit holders in Jacksonville. I have to say I am ashamed to live in a city were there are approximately 6 percent of the population carrying concealed weapons. IT SHOULD BE A LEAST 25 PERCENT. The criminal has a less than 1 in 10 chance of victimizing a concealed weapons permit holder. Pretty good odds of just finding "sheep". No wonder the crime rate is so high in Jax. The criminal has nothing to worry about. People...take the responsiblity of your own safety in your hands and don't just wait for JSO to arrive. By the time they do, it's too late. They will notify the next of kin. JSO does not have the manpower to put an officer in everyones pocket. So the next best option is a S&W...or glock...or 1911....or Sig...or Ruger.

I need to get motivated and get mine. Quick question though, being retired military, will a copy of my DD214 satisfy the training requirement? I'm sure I read that somewhere but I can't find that info now. I did find out that new licenses are good for 7 years!(as of 11 jun 08)

Slim, you do not have to register a gun, it’s not required. Besides I would have expected no less of you. |

two in the chest one in the head? You wouldn't have the chance because if I wanted you dead I'd hit that trigger before you knew where I stood. |
