19-Year-Old Enters Jacksonville Mayoral Race

Full story: www.jaxobserver.com

On the surface, Clayton Junkins might seem like a pretty typical 19-year-old. He graduated from Fletcher High School last year and has enrolled at Flagler College.

Q & A with MAYORAL CANDIDATE CLAYTON JUNKINS

OBSERVER: I guess the first question is the obvious one. You’re only 19 years old, you graduated from High School just last year, you’re a student at Flagler College. What makes you qualified to be mayor of Jacksonville?
Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: When did you first become interested in politics? Is running for office something you’ve been thinking about for a long time?
Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: Do you have any ideas for how you might be able to help spur the revitalization of downtown Jacksonville?
JUNKINS: Revitalizing downtown Jacksonville will be easier said than done. My plans to revitalize the downtown area would include: encouraging and supporting more events such as Art Walk, funding for the gentrification of historic neighborhoods and buildings such as the old Post Office; School 4; and the old Ford Motor plant, providing aid to the homeless, making good use of vacant land, and encouraging residents to help clean up Jacksonville. Part of my platform is to increase citywide resident involvement.
Commentary:
“Encouraging and supporting more events such as Art Walk, funding” I see that as more Government spending
“Providing aid to the homeless” I see that as more Government spending
Sorry Mr. Junkins, none of this will do a single thing to Revitalize Downtown.
—————
OBSERVER: What was your position, if any, on the recent landfill debate? If you were mayor now, would you have supported extending the contract with Waste Management or would you have been in favor of opening the bidding to outside contractors?
JUNKINS: Personally, I do not approve of landfills for environmental reasons. If I were mayor I would have extended the contract with Waste Management, just to avoid any legal issues which may affect tax payers. However, I would stress that one line in the contract saying that if better technology was used, the contract would be void.

Commentary:
So you would extended the contract to avoid conflict and a court case, that sir is real leadership. Now I will comment you on the clause to void the contract if new technology becomes available, although that would still end up in court.
OBSERVER: How much money do you expect to raise to support your campaign? Are you planning to pay the filing fee or try to qualify by collecting petitions?

Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: Are there any current or past leaders that you would model yourself after if you were elected?

Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: On a more personal note, have you read any good books lately?

Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: What other kinds of things do you enjoy doing while you’re not campaigning?

Useless or irrelevant question! next
OBSERVER: Thanks very much for taking the time to talk with us, is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you?

I commend Mr. Clayton Junkins for stepping into the cesspool that is politics.

“He says his campaign will focus on;
Education, taxes, the economy, limiting government power, reducing crime, and getting citizens more involved in their communities.”

This tells us little, but my first impression is that he leans towards being a big government spender:

“Encouraging and supporting more events such as Art Walk, funding”
“Providing aid to the homeless”

I see that as more Government spending.

By saying, limiting government power might mean reducing it from its current size (very good) or just limiting its growth which still equates to growth.

It's nice to see our youth taking an initiative towards their role in future leadership. While 19 years may not seem like much, think to yourself what you have learned over the past 10 years, and if that knowledge itself would be beneficial to leading a populus. My hat's off to you, sir, for not sitting idly by; but rather attempting to make an improvement, unlike those of us that sit idly by and discount a person's ability to lead based on a physical trait, i.e. age.... years ago that would've been called discrimination. Today, it's called......
