This is right on target. Considering how many under-age drivers are killed and injured every week on Long Island, this kind of investigation should be conducted more often - and perhaps targeting different bar and community locations EVERY FRIDAY and SATURDAY nights. Okay, this bar was in West Islip, but what about Bay Shore, Massapequa, Mastic, Freeport etc. The COUNTIES need to see that enforcement is ongoing - not just one hit and run investigation.

It's just not the under-age drinkers that get killed or injured, but the innocent drivers on the road, and the property destruction that these young drivers cause. As a father of an under 21 driver, I know how they act and feel indestructable...but the reality is that they are flesh and blood and will die as a result of blind studity. The reason the drinking age was raised to 21 was for a very distinct reason...to assure MATURE DRINKING DECISIONS ARE MADE BY RESPONSIBLE YOUNG ADULTS - NOT CHILDREN!

Although the article annouced the arrests of the employees and owners, it did not mention how many underage drinkers were found in the bar at the time of the investigation. If approximately 180 were in the bar...how many were under 21 years old???

Thanks for bringing this important subect up today, Bob - Oyster Bay

We ae not talking 12 year olds here...(hopefully) Do all 18-20 year old kids tell their parents where they are at 11:30 at night?

These owners obviously live in the land of OZ. To allow yourself to break multiple laws and expect to get away with it? Over-occupied to top it off? They'll be looking for a new job Monday because when their license is pulled....there will be no more business...all for the sake of making a buck...

I think the 21 age is unrealistic for drinking. Lowering it 19 or 20 would add a level of supervision compared to kids drinking in parks or at house parties.

THE ARTICLE DIDNT SAY THAT ANYONE WAS ARRESTED FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING. ONLY 5 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED, AND THEY WORKED THERE. I GUESS AFTER RAIDING A PLACE SOMEONE HAS TO GET ARRESTED OR WHATS THE POINT OF THE RAID. UNDERAGE WAS THE REAON FOR THE RAID,,,YET NO ARRESTS FOR IT.

Greg, as funny as this sounds-there is no law for underage drinking or minor in possession in New York State. There are statutes prohibiting selling or giving alcohol to youths as well as open alcoholic beverage in public. So cops target establishments that violate the Unlawfully Dealing with a Child provisions.

In the meantime, if I were to meet a 20 year old Marine Corps Sergeant home on leave from Iraq, I would be the first guy to buy him a cold beer.

If the bouncers or owners let the customers inside the bar, why would you arrest the bartenders?

Unlawfully dealing with a child is the law that's prevelent here. Different ages give rise to the offense:

Giving/ selling booze, less than 21, A misdemeanor
Cigarettes to less than 18, B misdemeanor
Hanging out in a bar less than 16, B misd.
Tattooing less than 18, B misd.
Place of drugs/sex less than 18, A misd.

There's an exception if the youth hanging out at a bar is with a parent or lawful guardian. Even though the bar violation is statutory law, it is virtually unheard of being enforced unless the kids stinks of booze. The bartenders were probably charged with sale of alcohol to minors.

In the '80s a released murderer went in there and made several patrons lie on the floor at gunpoint. He robbed them and shot them execution style in the back of their heads. I believe 3 died. He than kidnapped the barmaid and shot her too. Cops eventually caught him at the Walt Whittman Mall where he shot a detective in the face with a shotgun.

Nice tribute to releasing murderers on parole. The detective recovered and completed his career.

good job, im sure there are many bars out there that are doing the same thing, well....I think there should be a police task force that specifically hunts down these establishments and treats them the same as if they were a house of drugs, jail and very stiff fines to the owners of these flimsy run, just want the cash from you establisments

Well, I have mixed emotions....why is it that an 18 year old "kid" can join the Army, carry an automatic weapon, protect our country...but can't sit back & have a beer with his friends?

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Capricorn

Someone is in a finger-wagging mood and unfortunately they seem to be concentrating on you! Maybe they think you've fallen from grace for some reason, or perhaps you're simply the only person who happens to be around when they feel like letting off steam. Do your best not to fall into an equally critical and disgruntled mood, because it will soon make you feel wretched.
