Terry is as good as it gets, and is a good, wholesome individual who will treat you with respect. A good, honest businessman who has been blessed with success because of the hard work he puts in.

It's $10 a month for the service, they're quick and efficient at taking garbage and will make special trips if you have extra things (washing machines, lumber, etc.) that you'd like taken as well. And if you are having difficulty with your bill he'll work with you; he's an honest person and has a good heart.

He started the business years ago...the story goes that a relative of mine basically "signed him up" to haul some trash for someone because he didn't have a job at the time (was just out of high school) and had a truck payment. She basically told him that if he was gonna sit on his butt he might as well go make something of himself, and starting from that one job he made a business that has grown to be the best sanitation job in the county hands down (in my opinion). He's always treated us right, never had an ill word and his faith and kindness shows in how well he treats people of any income or family.

He was my pastor for years, is a member of my family, and my grandmother who he respected and loved as if she were his own mother helped give him the initiative to get his own business started. Wasn't aware that he had a job before then, but I was just going off the story he told me a couple years back.

I promise you that of all the people in Irvine (or Ravenna in this case, as I'll be moving on the mountain near where he lives in the next year or two--he'll know who this is based on this of course), Terry Barnes is one that I consider extremely good, Godly, kind, generous and well-meaning. So no, I'm not attempting to "start anything" simply because my memory is not as good as it used to be.

Terry was willing to pick up trash at my house even when my wife and I had almost nothing and couldn't afford to pay him for almost a year--he's a businessman, but he's also an understanding individual. Now that I run my own successful business (with him as a role model) I can't thank him enough for being understanding in my time of need.

I remember when Shelby was so little that I held her during church when she was just a couple weeks old. He's an awesome guy and a role model that should definitely be recognized for the work he does in our community.

Don't think maybe the business got started from bootlegging money, are you forgetting the other possibilities. Can't deny all them years bootlegging on the mountain where you're talking about moving to.Could that be why you're moving up on the mountain, could that be the business you are in.

Last I checked it was $10 in town and $12 up on the mountain. As you may be aware, houses on the mountain are further apart and the cost of climbing the mountain in a garbage truck is pretty high as far as gas goes. He hasn't raised his prices in all the years we've used his services, yet gas has more than doubled in the same period of time.

If you have any argument or problem with Terry, he will gladly listen to you. Just go see him in his office in town; he is more than willing to listen to you and in many cases will cut you a break just in case, to avoid the possibility that he may have unintentionally wronged you.

I'm a network administrator seven weeks from a double major. My parents are both college graduates and have worked in the professional world for nearly three decades. They were both first-generation college graduates and made something of themselves on their own accord. So no, I have no need to collect the drippings from the bottom of the barrel. I come from a family of hard workers who know we don't *deserve* a thing, yet are willing to work endlessly to achieve success and safety for our family.

We don't smoke, we don't drink (for the most part; although I have had a few drinks in my life I never really could get the hang of the taste of alcohol), we don't do drugs. We get up every day, cook our own food, go to work, do our jobs, come home, and spend time with our family. Boring? Maybe. But given the alternative I wouldn't have it any other way.

And if you have a question about Terry, the business run by some members of his family, or anything else, just ask him. He's a very open and public individual and has no secrets to hide. He will tell you that he was a very wild kid growing up, and made his own share of trouble. After finding God, his life changed, and when he was called to preach, it changed further...and for the better each time.

Regarding the money for his business, he started working at Kroger, had a truck he'd just bought and needed some extra money, and my grandmother basically recruited him to go and move some garbage for some people.

My grandma was the type where if you complained about something, she would say, "Then fix it." The loudest complainers are often the ones best equipped to notice the flaws around them and to repair them. So when he complained that he was short on money, her solution was simple: get your butt to work. And he did. He made some money, hauled a bit more trash, made a bit more money, kept doing that until he was able to buy this really really ugly utility truck, used that to haul more trash, and so on.

He has spent more than a decade doing a job that many would balk at. He takes the dirty diapers, rotted food, plastic wrappers, crumpled paper and other waste that we would not even touch anymore, and disposes of it. He hasn't raised his prices because he doesn't need to. Why? Because he has a comfortable and peaceful life with his family, and generates enough income to sustain them. He has no aspirations of going and buying a yacht, driving around a Ferrari, or wearing a Rolex. He would rather give people an inexpensive and legal way to dispose of their garbage while keeping Estill county a little bit cleaner.

He's not the only trash man in Irvine. To read some of the other threads on Topix, you could just throw it in a neighbors yard or on the side of the road.
