Who on earth plans to deliver at a facility that is around 42 freeway miles from home in Southern California? I can't believe that there is not a water birthing center anywhere closer. That was very selfish of this young pair of latent yuppies. They could have cost this newborn his life...maybe even caused a multi-car accident on the freeway...YIKES!

Let's see, first you label them "yuppies", then you practically accuse them of child abuse.

Assume much?

Sorry, LOL, but she is right. Anyone who took enough time to educate themselves on the safety of water births would know better than to bother wasting time driving all the way to Irvine to do it.

LOL - You are an idiot...I did not accuse them of child abuse as you "assumed." But I will add that this couple put being "trendy" above the practical safety of their newborn, their 17-month-old (who was riding in the back seat, themselves, and every other driver and occupant of every other car they came near on the freeway. I will accuse them of narcissistic behavior, tho.

I have no doubt that the concept of water birthing was something glamorous that they can boast to all of their friends about for years to come ad nauseum, rather than what is in the best interest of the newborn. Now they have a different story to bore everyone with, within earshot, who will stand still long enough to listen.
Agree totally

funny how everyone assumes that giving birth in a birthing center or having a waterbirth is hip or glamorous. Now that's a narrow minded uneducated generalization. You people really think parents choose those options so they can go boast about their 'hippie' births? Grow up, do some research, don't just assume that 'different' is either wrong or hip. Most families who choose to birth outside of the hospitals do so after spending lots and lots of time reading, analyzing, researching on the subject of giving birth, instead of just listening to one 'expert' and following him blindly.

and yes, the birth did happen during what was supposed to be an hour drive. But this was extremely fast labor, most parents would arrive with time to spare even if the ride really was an hour long. The family did well, kept their cool and birthed a bigger baby with no issues. Congratulations to them!

I wonder if they "researched" this data from real medical journals...of course, the medical establishment is only full of 'experts' who spout jibberish, so I guess they wouldn't be looking in those types of places for their information...http://pediatric s.aappublications.org/cgi/cont ent/full/110/2/411; http://www.medicinescomplete.com/journals/fac... ;

I got chills reading this story! My biggest fear is that I will give birth on the 405 Fwy on the way to the hospital.
Congratulations to the family! That is a big baby!

YOU make YOUR choices, THEY made THEIRS.

If you don't approve of waterbirth, then don't participate - but to slam everyone else who does, w/o knowing them, or why they made those decisions, puts you in the idiot category.

As someone else already pointed out, this was an EXTREMELY quick birth.

I would not have made their same choices - but I don't know them, nor do I know their circumstances or what they based their decsions on.

As such, I prefer to congratulate them vs. bashing them.

What a strange thing to say, presumably from someone who is anti-semitic. There's not a word about their religion in the article. I happen to know the family and they're Catholic, not Jewish. And, for your information, the media in the US, like the government and everything else, is pretty much run by Christians.

birthing in a tub of filthy water is not the best thing for a baby. Parents think it is all 'natural', but studies show that the water is actually filled with fecal germs. Do you want your newborn to inhale a bunch of **** before it takes it's first breath? There is nothing "natural" about being born into water. The birthing process is designed so that after having the amnionic fluid squeezed out of the lungs while traversing the birth canal, the baby then takes a deep breath of air and fills the lungs.
What about in filtered water (that's what my friend did) the place she did it had filtered water. By the way, the hospital is filled with germs! Especially, when germs may travel from one vent to another. The hospital isn't the only place to have a safe birth...especially with the 30% c-section rate in this country.

If this natural birthing is so good for the baby, I'm surprised the nearest office is in Irvine. From Westchester to Irvine? Heck, why not plan it in New York. Both locations are equally stupid for a couple living is Westchester. Another thing, it's lucky that nobody got hurt. The baby survived and the father didn't have 70mph traffic that could have resulted in a freeway disaster while he's trying to drive and deliver his son. This selfish couple that doesn't trust the local hospitals rather risk lives by driving 60 miles on a freeway to perform some "pet rock" type birth is being very selfish and puts others at risk. If you live in Westchester, have the baby in Westchester. If you want to have the baby in Irvine, move to Irvine.
The article stated that the couple had their first in Irvine and obviously made it to their birth. My understanding is that the mother did not have major signs or symptoms of labor (rare but can and has happened). They were in the car for only 20 minutes. In other words, even if they drove to a near by hospital they probably would have had the baby in the car because of traffic. They would have had to literally live next door to a hospital or birthing center.

great news, happy for the couple. why did they wait to take the baby with the pediatrition the next day. but everything seem to be ok with her & the baby.
CONGRADULATIONS new parents
Good question, I know a midwife and know that they do all the check ups and bring equipment wherever they go. They will send you to the hospital only if there is an emergency. In this case, mom and baby were probably fine once checked. My understanding is that they (midwife/s) work primarily with low-risk women in good health. That's why birthing centers and midwives have such a low c-section rate.

But it isn't amazing. It IS stupidity in the first degree. Another smarmy couple who think they know better than the medical establishment and who are willing to put their baby's life at risk to be hip and "do it their own way" . You all are praising them because everything luckily turned out OK. Had they experienced a fetal death or hemorrhage while boxed in on a jammed freeway which they never should have been on in the first place, I am sure you'd all have a different opinion. The woman was lucky. Let's hope that is the last kid she brings into this world. The gene pool is already on too much of a downside.
Well, considering our nation's 30% c-section rate I am not sure if the "medical establishment" is always the way to go. Babies are put at risk everyday in a hospital setting by being c-sectioned way before their due date and then end up in ICU! To get an idea of what I am talking about watch the movie "The Business of Being Born" or look for a clip of it on-line. They were only in their vehicle for 20 minutes so this would or could have happened anywhere! Considering the circumstances and how they handled the situation their gene pool is on the upside. I hope to have a baby natural and painless!

Just kidding.
That's not nice! My younger brother was close to that size and my mother had him fast and naturally. We don't know how much the pushing out part hurt!
