OK LBPD time to step up to the plate and pay for any and all vet bills and post surgery care for the dog and if it dies, pay for a new dog. Just a"tap on front gate with a baton" for a family to awaken themselves to the fact they are looking for a perp in the yard? Take home message here is, "let sleeping dogs lie." Do the right thing.

Why should the tax payers be on the hook? How do you know the officer wasn't justified in shooting the dog. Unless you were there and witnessed the entire incident it's not fair to jump to the conclusion that the officer was in the wrong based on what is written in the paper or on some silly blog. Why not wait until all the facts are in. Then, if there is some misconduct maybe the city should pay. Do the right thing and wait for all the facts.

There was No armed perp! They came to the wrong house! They told us they were dispatched to apt 3 when this residence is clearly not an apartment building, is a BIG HOUSE! The dog did not attack anyone! WE have a number of witnesses who saw and know that this dog has never attacked anyone or anything! The cop saw a pit bull was in the yard the dog probably went to greet him like he does everyone and they shot our poor dog. I don't know who this cop lady is but her story is all wrong! The dog was not chasing them out, he was running for his life! All the neighbors are on our side and will help us take action against the LBPD.

In the end, it is just a dog. No comparison to a human life.

He's more than "just a dog" he's a member of our family. You must not have pets. No human life was in danger! That dog has never killed anything! No cats, birds, other dogs. It had never attacked anyone and I know it did not try to attack those officers. I understand they got scared when they saw him but did they have to shoot 5 times?! He was not running after them trying to attack them he just wanted to get away.

The Officer and the city SHOULD BE PAYING THE BILLS on this one.

The officer TAPPED his baton on the gate?
The officer IGNORED the "Beware of Dog" sign?

What did he think was going to happen? Do the math. If the officer did in fact tap the gate, how long did he wait for a response? I'll bet it wasn't very long. A 2-year old dog moves pretty fast when someone makes a noise. The dog was investigating an intruder into his turf. That's what dogs do. The fact that the dog was a Pit-Bull is absolutely irrelevant. That's just an excuse and they're using that to justify the incident.

What if it had been another large breed? Pits are rumored to be agressive. Some are, most aren't.

The cop was doing his job, the dog was doing his.

But, think about this, the cop was afraid of the dog, ran out the gate with the dog on his heels and left the gate open? If the dog was as dangerous as the officer may have believed, then the cop endangered the entire neighborhood.

Fortunately, the dog appears to be as friendly as the owner claims, and went to a neighbor's yard and hid to lick his wounds.

The police were there doing their job. They did knock on the fence in an attempt to get someones attention inside, then they did the logical thing and went inside.

The city doesn't owe the owner anything.

All I have to say is the LBPD better foot the bill for this accident. This is totally not acceptable. I understand that the officer were in fear but what about non lethal force?? The officer already admitted to using his baton to "tap on the fence", where was it when the dog charged? What about the tazer? I call B.S. If I were the family, I would insist they pay or I would sue.

Hey mydogwaldo. You are obviously not a dog owner, rather you are an idiot. The smart dog owner posts the signs as a disclaimer stating that if you enter their yard, something can happen. I have 2 boxers which are not mean dogs and I also post the signs. They are also used as deterrents to would be idiots (in this case LBPD) so that they dont try anthing stupid. I am all about the LBPD trying to keep us safe, but my god, when they took their oath of office, did the city steal the officers common sense??
To the Old Breed--WTF? You are a typical scumbag. Typical racist that can look at a picture and tell if somebody is a gangster thug. Hope this happens to your family just to see what your reaction is then fool.

I have an idea ... let the Police take a report over the phone and leave everyone be ... no sense in making a big comotion over responding to a call or investigating a crime ... let everything just take its course, right? If I call the Police I want a response by the biggest, meanest cop there is and I want him to investigate fully and then enforce the law.

I'm not saying the PD shouldn't go in the yard, but this would not have happened if they didn't go in the yard. They should be on the hook.

This is just the beginning of the very big problems Long Beach is in for with all the new pit bulls that are dragging people around on skate boards and bikes. Which btw is down right dog abuse.
Also it is not in a pit bulls nature to act like a poodle.
I tell ya there's trouble brewing.

If you love the dog so much, why does it sleep in the yard?

Why do you need a Pitbull in the first place? PitBulls and Gangster thugs are one in the same.

The LBPD did the right thing, should he have stopped to see if the dog was freindly?
No.

I have a 20lbs cockapoo and she would have reacted the same way, makes no difference what the breed of the dog is. And why would the police ignore the beware of dog sign, people just dont put those up for fun...
