I'm just curious, and could be completely off here, but I thought the raise in fees recently placed on city bills were to help save jobs? Why so many lay-offs today?

That was if the unions accepted a 7 1/2% cut, which is a reversal of a pension pick-up that had been negotiated in previous years. The unions hadn't accepted this cut, therefore the layoffs.

A total of 9 people weree let go.

2 firemen

2 police

2 water department

3 from other city departments.

With the present state of the countries economy I can see way we had to layoff. No one wants people to lose their jobs! These people are victums of this Obama's oppressing government that hasn't figured out how to make the jobs and the economy happen, their plan is spend spend spend. This isn't all the cities Leaders fault. I pray that things will begin to get better in America with a new President.

Ask Cleary!!!!!! He composed the budget and took credit for it in the Tribune. He said in effect "if city employees accept cuts today I will gladly give them a hamburger Tuesday." Heard that in the cartoons before. Why does Ironton keep putting this character on council. Promises, promises for years and no, notta', zero results period from him except maybe building his retirement. He always wants to cut employees especially the water department. All should go to council and ask him when all his grand plans are going to materialize.

Cleary does not make all decisions himself. Mayor made first request.

The Mayor can only operate the city as the councel allows funding for it. With a restricted budget how can you keep all the city employees working when there isn't any money to work with? Concessions by the Unions are happening all over America because they realize that they bargained themselves out of money with all the binnies that they have pushed for. What choice does the Mayor have but to layoff or go under? I agree with the prior post when it was said the Clairy must go.

Mayor blames council, that is how you win an election. You scare the people, tell them who's to blame for all of the bad things happening. Then you are the one that makes the actual decision.

Well if he had a chance for another term I might agree with you but he doesn't. It is the city council that gives him his budget to run the city on. You can only strectch a dollar so far, it takes more tax money from new jobs to make a difference. Maybe one day the rest of the state will realize that the state line doesn't stop at Chillicothe.

I have to take up for the garbage men.(No Im not related to or know any of them) I have seen them work, and they work their butts off. Their pay should be covered by the garbage fee that is on our water bill every month. If they hadnt gotten the unions to agree yet then why did they go ahead and raise our safety fees and income tax? I feel this is just a scare tactic so the voters will approve more fees or more taxes.

In other cities big and little, the driver of the truck will pull over and get out with the other guy on the back to load garbage. Why can't Ironton do that?

I would guess if it was up to you the driver would get out and pick up all the trash. That way you only had one guy doing it.

There were 3 laid off at the PD, Grover Carter, Jamie Pruitt, and Chad Artrip. I don't know why we can't cut some of administrative positions, let some of those people cross train and maybe do 2 jobs, just an example, but like say, payroll and benefits specialist, why not combine the 2? Just a thought
