What are all the poles in the water for? We boated from Newport to Usk and several places we saw poles that looked old and strategically placed. There were birds nesting on the tops but I doubt that the poles were put there for that???

The 'poles' in the water are leftover from when the sawmills existed here. Timber was floated up the river and workers actually monitored and assisted the log flow from some of these. The rest were placed to hold the logs offshore until they could be brought up to the sawmills. Now, cormorants, geese, osprey, herons, etc. use these poles for nesting and hunting perches.
