Seldom Seen Slim (aka Seldom Clean Slim, as my dad called him) used to watch our car when we went to our mine in Pleasant Canyon. My brother would hotwire it if we left it in Trona, where we lived. He didn't dare touch it out at Ballarat! Of course, he has long since passed away, but where he is buried, I couldn't say.

Hello.
Seldom Seen Slim was actually Charles Ferge, born in Springfield, Illinois, November 21, 1881 and passed away in Trona on August 10, 1968. His services were seven days later at Ballarat where he is buried.

Interesting! I'll have to visit his grave site at the cemetary next time I visit my father's. You learn something new every day. Thanks for the info.

Was looking for some news from my home town and saw this posting. I had not hear of Seldom Seen Slim since I left town in 1969. It really brought bac5690k some old memories.

I lived there actually until I graduated in 1967. My parents lived there for about 30 years or so. I went into the USAF in 1969 and never went back to leave.

My cousins grew up there. We were always out there. I remember Seldom Seen Slim. My aunt took us out to his place. The desert was a really interesting place to visit.

The best time is the early fall and spring for visiting. As a kid growing up we liked to go to some local spots like Indian Joe's, Great Falls and the Dunes and camp. My brother is actually writing a book about his experiences growing up there but so far I have not been mentioned much.

We used to go to all those places. I would love to read the book when it comes out. Keep me posted. The last time I was there many of the houses were boarded up. Starting to look like a ghost town. So your in Kansas now, how do you like it? Who are some of the people you knew in Trona?

Artist: I like Kansas fairly well. Still trying to get used to the weather, however. The people are pretty friendly here. I ran around with Joe Williams and his brother, the Pickerell boys and was in a garage band for several years with Lawrence and Tim Wright (not related. Growing up we know almost everyone it town but now I only know a few people. Been gone too long.

We moved to Arkansas for 5 yrs. in the 90's. Really pretty state. We are back in California now though. Do you remember any of the Hunt boys? Also Gary Dye? I can't remember all the names right now. There were quite a few people in Trona back in the 1960's.

Gary Hunt and Gary Dye were a year behind me. I can't remember the names of some of the others. To me, the 60's were the best years. But then I graduated in 67' and moved to the Central Valley and lived there until I moved to Kansas in January. Ran across several of my classmates over the years while moving around the Valley.

My family was in Trona for many generations. We visited Seldom Seen Sam often. He had two donkeys or mules, I really can't recall which. I was a small child. My sister Barbara Gossett (Irish)and I played with Cherry the donkey when ever we went to visit. I remember that Sam had little crocodiles in troughs. He was into rocks and reptiles. He and my dad (Gerry Irish) were friends. Sam was always very nice to us.

I don't know why I kept typing in Sam instead of Slim. Oops... It was late at night and a bit past my bedtime. Sorry about that.

Whatever you have to say today, you'll do it with charm and grace. This is just what you need if you've got to have a quiet word in someone's ear without offending them forever or putting your foot in it.
