"The woman referred to (who was not,
incidentally, a member of my church) was somebody I did not know, had never talked with, and certainly had never counseled." Stoen could not have forgotten that he represented Maxine in her divorce or that he was a custodian of the fund for her children or was instrumental in suppressing the coroner's investigation into her death. He must have felt extremely threatened to publicly report such a blatant, bold-faced lie. Jones profited from Maxine's death in several ways. He gained a new Angel; a competent, intelligent slave, Jim Randolph. He received the $3,000.00 trust fund and the three children who, following their mother's funeral, were placed in Temple foster homes and enrolled in the welfare system. Their welfare support checks were signed over to the Temple that profited at least $10,000.00 from overcharging the welfare system and under-caring for the children. In 1977, a special prosecution unit of the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, looking into allegations of illegal activities in the Peoples Temple, cited what their subsequent report termed "Welfare Diversion," but rather than pursue the investigation, the DA's office referred the matter to the city's Department of Social Services and the City Comptroller's Office with the recommendation that any evidence that surfaced should be submitted to the DA's welfare fraud expert, Don Didler. Didler, following the lead of Mendocino County's Welfare Director, Dennis Denny, did absolutely nothing. Together, Didler and Denny were very effective in protecting the Temple's federal welfare subsidy. In retrospect, Maxine Harpe's story was a study in microcosm of the events that would occur some eight years later in Jonestown, Guyana. In both cases, the victims were systematically stripped of all self-esteem and lured into a total dependence on Jim Jones, who, at the proper time, denied them everything. Suicide appeared to be the best, if not the only, alternative. It will never be known whether Maxine's death was a suicide or a murder. She may or may not have actually wrapped the wire around her neck, just as the residents of Jonestown may or may not have voluntarily taken poison; regardless, there is no doubt that Jim Jones killed them all. The Maxine Harpe death is but one of a half-dozen unsolved killings connected to People's Temple during its California phase. |

Temple Cont from page 1 Said Denny, "We do not believe that any children were placed from this county in (Temple) foster homes here. But we're waiting to substantiate that. Our best evidence over the last two years is zero." A "few" children placed here by other counties, he added, may have died in Jonestown. Denny said his department didn't place children in temple foster homes because it believed they would not have "freedom of choice" in "religious training." "We can't even count on one hand - over ten years - where we placed a kid in one of these licensed homes of theirs," said the welfare director. "Maybe we might have put one in for a day or two until we could find a place - because we had to put a kid where there was a bed - but we here didn't place them." Asked what the department's policy was, Denny replied, "I'm saying our referral procedure was never to use any of their homes." Because the department kept a close watch on foster children placed in homes it licensed temple members increasingly opted for legal guardianship, a tactic which removed them from social services jurisdiction.(Meaning the county welfare dept. was circumvented & the kids became wards of the state thereby eliminating local scrutiny.) Denny said temple members became legal guardians to 25 children in Mendocino, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and Los Angeles Counties. Four of the seven children in Mendocino County guardianships died at Jonestown, according to Denny, who said three children from Bay Area guardianships also died there. Dewy said the four dead youngsters from local guardianships did not come from here originally, but just where they came from remains a mystery. He would not release the names of children involved in temple guardianships, saying they were confidential on orders from Mendocino County District Attorney Joe Allen and the U.S. General Accounting Office, which is investigating foster child placement and the temple. Former Mendocino County Assistant District Attorney Tim Stoen said temple attorney Eugene Chaikin did the legal work for temple guardianships in Mendocino County, according to Denny, who mentioned but didn't reveal "documentation" supporting his assertion. Denny also said Jones brought or had placed here approximately 150 foster children who were "in and out" of licensed and unlicensed homes between 1966 and 1977? More than 100? of the imported youngsters were from the Bay Area and Los Angeles, living illegally with temple families not licensed to have them, alleged Denny who recalled, "We then were asking those jurisdictions in the Bay Area what was going on and why they were placing those kids here without our authority." When social services discovered children in unlicensed temple homes, it forced Jones to send them back to where they had come from, he said. Denny declined to name Bay Area probation officers and social workers who were sending foster youngsters to licensed or unlicensed temple homes here. |

Although People's Temple didn't include child abuse in the repertoire of twisted behavior that led to Jones town, some of its members allegedly practiced it at home in ways ranging from beatings to sexual molestation, according to the social services director.
Denny, who could not "hazard a guess" as to the total number of Child Protective Service cases involving temple adults, said that in five of the cases, Jones or his aides intervened on behalf of the accused and hired the "best" attorneys for them. The cases are not public record, said Dewey, declining to name the "best" attorneys. Nevertheless, parents who were temple members committed no more child abuse than members of any other... article clipping ends there continues... ...religious group, said Denny whose department monitored the temple very closely for violations against children. Neither informants nor anyone else, said Denny, reported child abuse or batterings at temple meetings. "We never," he said. "went to the temple and saw a kid that had been beaten in the temple - never happened, never happened." Relying on reports from ex-members and informants, Denny said that what took place at the temple was "at least" paddling and usually the paddling of adults. Even though social services didn't make life easy for Jones in Mendocino County, Denny said Jones left the area mostly because of the income, power and ego, rewards big cities offered. "I think he had to broaden his base, he had to get to San Francisco, and set up a base there where he could control the political environment..." "I don't think he did that up here, I didn't see it then, and I'm not seeing it in retrospect now." According to Denny, controlling the political environment largely manipulating politicians by showing an ability to produce votes for or against them, and "in the arena down south that's an acceptable practice." Outside Tim Stoen, Denny didn't think Jones controlled powerful people in Mendocino County, nor did Denny have any evidence to show Jones controlled public agencies like the Ukiah Police Department or the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office. Were Denny's efforts to stop Jones from breaking welfare law in Mendocino a success? "He survived," said Denny, "I'm questioning the success. You can always do better. We did as good a job as we could at the time - I'm convinced of that, yes." Life seems quaint now at the Mendocino County Social Services Department. Welfare applicants sit in a tiny waiting area with a soda machine. Venetian blinds cleave the sunlight of a winter afternoon. Behind a tall partition shutting out the waiting area, department staffers go about their well-oiled business in the systems and procedures labyrinth. Dennis Denny is working another endless day. He has a lot to do this month, sending the Mendocino County Grand Jury information about the man who again permeates his life, about the war that was hot and cold, the success of internal security, the way he could admire Jones' charisma and detest his duplicity. Denny may one day testify before the grand jurors, who no doubt will listen to his story of his war against apocalypse with a measure of awe, humility and gratitude - and perhaps with some perplexity over what measures government should take to curb a religion's abuse of freedom. http://jonestownapologistsalert.blogspot.com/... |

San Francisco Examiner D.A. AIDE OFFICIATES FOR MINOR BRIDE By Rev. Lester Kinsolving Examiner Religion Writer REDWOOD VALLEY - Mendocino County's assistant district attorney - who has written that his pastor, the Rev. Jim Jones has raised 40 people from the dead - has confirmed reports that he himself has solemnized the marriage of a minor girl who joined his church. Timothy O. Stoen, who in addition to his duties as assistant DA, is attorney for and board member of Pastor Jones's People's Temple Christian (Disciples) Church in this hamlet near Ukiah, admitted he is not an ordained clergyman. When asked by what authority he had officiated at the marriage of Mildred "Mickie" Johnson (who has now returned to her family in Indianapolis), Stoen contended: "I meet all the requirements of the State Civil Code." When asked which section of the state code permits an attorney (rather than a judge) to solemnize marriages, Stoen replied: "I'll have to ask you to let me go back and check that." The issue arose in a legal affidavit filed yesterday in Indianapolis by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Johnson. The Johnsons, former parishioners of the Rev. Mr. Jones when he was a pastor of the Indianapolis People's temple, charged that after Stoen married their daughter (to a man identified only as "Junius"), she was placed on the welfare rolls of Mendocino County. Forced Donation The Johnsons also charged that Mildred was obliged to give her monthly welfare check of $95 to The People's Temple - and that in August of 1971, Stoen had written them for permission to appoint a legal guardian for their other daughter, Gwin, age 18. (The two girls were among former parishioners - including a number of teenagers - who followed the charismatic prophet-pastor, who left Indiana for California in 1965.) Stoen confirmed that he had written the Johnsons for such permission. But he said that he had not known the Rev. Mr. Jones in 1965, when the Johnson affidavit says: "Jones said that the world would end on July 16, 1967, and encouraged the congregation here to pool their money and follow him to California - where he promised they would find a place where only they would be safe from this impending disaster." |

Curious visitors
The Johnson affidavit also charges that the Rev. Mr. Jones: "Uses people to visit potential church members, noting anything personal in the house, like addresses on letters, types of medicine in the medicine cabinet, or pictures of relatives. "Then, when they show up in church, he tells them things about their ailments and the kinds of pills they take." When asked to comment on this charge, Stoen explained: "I don't remember anything like this. I believe Jim's gift is authentic - or as he said in his sermon yesterday, he has paranormal gifts." On Sunday, Sept. 10, at 11:15 p.m.(following this writer's first visit to a People's Temple service in Redwood valley), Stoen telephoned long distance to say among other things: "I suppose you've heard a rumor that Jim Jones was run out of Indianapolis for faith healing?" When asked to elaborate, Stoen explained: "Well, I've seen the story in the Indianapolis Star." What information did this Star story contain? "I don't remember the details," replied the assistant district attorney. Fast Trip Yet immediately after the Indianapolis Star featured one of two stories about Prophet Jones and his faith healing, Stoen traveled from California to Indianapolis to confer with Dr. Jeanette P. Riley of the Indiana State Board of Psychology Examiners, according to Dr. Reilly. When asked about this, Stoen explained that he made the trip but that Dr. Reilly had sent him to a meeting of the board - which had announced that it intended to investigate the Rev. Mr. Jones for allegedly claiming to heal psychosomatic diseases. Yet the Indiana State Board took no action, as Jones had not used the title of psychologist. |

No Case
"I explained to the board and to Indiana's Attorney General that Jim had done no wrong, and the Attorney General said he can come back anytime, as there is no case." The announcement of the possible investigation by the state board came after the Indianapolis Star reported that on Oct. 13, 1971, the Rev. Mr. Jones told the congregation of the People's Temple of Indianapolis: "With over 4000 members of our California Church, we haven't had a death yet!" Star reporter Byron Wells, an eyewitness at the visiting pastor's afternoon and evening services that day, reported that at the afternoon service a woman was ordered to leave the auditorium in order that she "pass a cancer." Similarity Wells reported that when the woman returned, her alleged cancer was being carried about by an attendant - although the Rev. Mr. Jones warned everyone not to get too close. He also reported a striking similarity between those healed in the afternoon and those healed that evening. The Star also reported that the Rev. Mr. Jones subsequently refused requests to allow that the alleged cancer be analyzed. He was reported as explaining that he had "no objections," but that he has to abide with the wishes of his church leaders "not to become involved in more publicity." The Rev. Mr. Jones was also reported as having said that he was afraid that the cancerous tissue would be switched on him in a deliberate attempt to discredit his power. Dislikes Publicity "I've done more than any other faith healer," he was reported as explaining, "that's why I don't want any more publicity, either favorable or unfavorable." Apparently, the Rev. Mr. Jones, for all his charismatic effect, has not been able to prevail on his devoted flock in this regard. For this past weekend, when he was in San Francisco for special services at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School Auditorium, pamphlets were distributed throughout downtown San Francisco by his followers. These pamphlets advertised: "PASTOR JIM JONES... Incredible!...Miraculous... Amazing!... The Most Unique Prophetic Healing Service You've Ever Witnessed!... Behold The Word Made Incarnate In Your Midst!" |

Ex-Aide Links Threats and Violence to Jones Adviser; 'All Lies,' Stoen's Lawyer Says Stoen Lawyer Questions Motives The Jonestown Weapons Assigned to Voter Fraud Unit
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 21--Terri Buford, until two months ago a top aide to the Rev. Jim Jones, told reporters today that every violent, illegal or "reprehensible" act that he or members of his Peoples Temple undertook had been initiated or approved by Timothy O. Stoen. Mr. Stoen, once a prosecutor here, was the chief legal adviser to Mr. Jones before resigning from the sect two years ago. http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html... Followers Say Jim Jones Directed Voting Frauds; Busloads of Voters Followers Say Jim Jones Directed Voting Frauds; Busloads of Voters * By JOHN M. CREWDSON Special to The New York Times December 17, 1978, Sunday Page 42, 1468 words SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 16--Determined to help elect politicians friendly toward his People's Temple, the Rev. Jim Jones ordered what former temple members say was an organized campaign of fraudulent voting practices that included importing busloads of illegal voters to cast their ballots in this city's 1975 municipal elections. |

Hurray! It's time to get rid of laughable Lintott!!!
Too bad we've had to deal with the county falling further and further in the hole, with business after business closing since she wrangled the office. Thanks for federalizing our county, Ms. Lintott. My vote is for anyone other than her. We need someone with a better understanding of how to run a rural county. And if we elect someone else, our dear dead DA Norm Vroman, may finally Rest In Peace! Amen |

Go to http://theava.com/archives/2967 It says it all. |

We need another Vroman. So let's get Charles Manson out of the joint and make him D.A. That would make a good match.

There is a big case right now about a guy who is being charged with killing a pedophile who sexually abused him for many years and then stalked and harassed him and came after his child. The pedophile was reported to the police several times in the last 20 or so years but no investigation was ever done. Lintott has kept her distance from the case. She put Ravitch on it, then Elizabeth Norman was given the case right before Ravitch announced that she was running for DA of Sonoma County. They are trying to send the guy to prison for 50 years to life, and they dismiss the sexual abuse. I know that people will have their opinions about the case and how it should be handled. I just think that the public should be aware of this case, especially since the election is coming up. I hear so many stories about abuse being reported and nothing being done. Child sexual abuse is an epidemic - 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused. What is Lintott doing about it? It is wrong that these children aren't being protected, then they are punished for having to protect themselves because the system failed them.

Thanks for the info... What is Lintott doing about this? Would be nice if they guy could use the actions of the Government as precedent... Is it not terrorism? to have someone abusing you, harassing you,stalking you and threatening your child. sounds like terrorism to me. The police should get sued too for aiding and abetting. What are you to do? screw that crapp. molested, harassed,stalked and threatening ur child and the law sit's on their hands? This guy had no other choice but to kill this guy. I would do the same if I was in his shoes and so would most...it's your child... come on!!! |

I think both Matt and David are a better alternative than the present trinity in Ukiah. I think that if either of them win, then the other should be recruited into the office. Additional issues I do not see on this discussion are:(1) the exportation of prosecutor jobs to Sonoma County as in why are so many of them in the DA's Office when we have plenty of people willing to live in Mendo?(2) Lack os leadership diversity. I am all for women being prosecutors. But is it a coincidence that the top 3 attorneys in the office are women?(3) Whats with the Empire Law hires? The percentage suggests an entrenched interest is involved if you get my drift...sniff...sniff (4) The leadership is top-heavy. No need for both an Assistant DA and a Chief DA in such a small office, period (go stroll the halls of court and see your tax dollars at work if you think I am wrong)(5) Demand to see who was last hired in the past few years compared to the more qualified competition and then scratch your head. Mendocino can do so much better and I hope when it comes to election it that it will.
|
||||

I wonder which one of them will admit 9.31 is unconstitutional and recognize Kelly ruling
|
||||
your right, she doesn't prosecute, she gets the witch from Sonoma Co, who is running (again & hopefully unsuccessfully ) Ravich to do the job for her. Sorry, but a wise Pomo elder told me once, "In order for any woman to reach a powerful platform in life today, she has to be nastier than the men she rose above. When my people had no white man, the women were in charge, and we were fair and loving, but today, a woman has to compete with the cruel and evil ways of the world, making them just as cruel and evil." In some ways it is true, look what they came after, Vroman, who is the worst back woods, illegal mexican supporter (via La Bamba imports) stolen gun owner pice of crap, go figure. |
||||
This should never go to trial. Lintott is a fool, Ravich is Rabid. |
||||
Now that is a good one. |

To:Historic past: You get an 'F' on your college thesis. Michele O's is way better!!!! I would bet that you are a republican with all of your conspiracy theories.You know nothing that is really going on in CA. How could you when you live clear across the country??!!! Keep wasting your time. No one is believing your crap!!!
|
||||
|
'Historic Past' is right. No one who would keep Tim Stoen deserves to be D.A. Period. End of story. It is amazing that that man is still allowed to keep his law license.
