Our view: Pa. roads not suited for 70 mph speed limit

Full story: Public Opinion

Here's one instance, at least, where it might be a good thing that Pennsylvania lags behind a trend that has overtaken some of our neighbor states.

There are plenty of places where our roads will support a 70 or even 75 MPH limit. Just allow it in the left lane only and require slower vehicles to stay in the right lane. Granted, there are many areas where 70 is not practical. That's why we have highway engineers to determine this.

Agreed. This editorial makes it sound like every single road would have a 70 mph speed limit. Obviously that wouldn't work, but there are plenty of roads that could handle it.

Every major road is designed based on a design speed and with a maximum percent of grade. PennDOT can easily determine which roads are eleigible for 70 mph.

Yeah, white knuckle driving if you S U C K at driving to begin with.

There are plenty of roads that can handle 70, if you take the bad drivers off the road. But until then it won't work well.

Yes Matt. You are writing on behalf of the Public Opinion. The exercise ends there.Take a step into reality. I still remember in the '60's and 70's when a speed limit was 70+. Sure we had accidents but you will have accidents at 25mph.Please don't waste your degree on such a trivial subject.People will do what people do.Like it or not you cannot reshape the public physique with your lame "Our Opinion" crap. your too late and lame at best.

NOw that is a ticket for disaster. Look at Ohio where trucks are limited to 55 and cars 70 on I-70.
Ever get behind a truck trying to pass another truck there is interesting to say the least.

I can't see Ohio from here. What's the problem? We get the same situation on 81. A line of trucks doing 60 in the right lane being passed by one truck doing 60 1/4. Takes all year. You can't legislate courtesy, but police could enforce the 'keep right' law. Handing out speeding tickets is so much easier.

What's the big deal? Ever get pulled over for doing 70mph on 81 or any interstate in Pa? No!
It doesn't matter what the speed limit is. Get a life.

I'm quite happy with my life, thank you. You, obviously, are not, since you feel the need to be rude and insulting. Oh, and I don't care whether or not you 'get a life'.

You're kind of a timid touchy guy to think that was rude and insulting. Sorry you were offended. Just thinking this was a non subject to post about.

Touchy and timid? You told me to get a life. So now I challenge you to show me how your life is more productive and fruitful than mine.

The problem is modern vehicles can safely manage speeds that the vast majority of Pennsylvania roads cannot support.
