BREAKING NEWS: Independence Community College trustees on Thursday voted to censure trustee Hoite Caston following his actions at a statewide community college trustee meeting in Arkansas City on Sept. 14 in which he decried the formation of an insurance consortium between ICC, Coffeyville Community College and Neosho County Community College. The resolution signed by trustees Jay Jones, Norman Chambers, David Wallis and Phillip Fienen (trustee Val DeFever was absent and trustee Caston voted in opposition) said Caston "made disparaging remarks about the integrity and business practices of Neosho County Community College, Coffeyville Community College, and IMA, to the point where the presidents of both CCC and NCCC had to issue system-wide statements defending their institutions against the claims by Trustee Caston... "

Trustees also voted 4-1 to seek Caston's resignation. Trustee David Wallis presented a list of multiple allegations against Caston that, Wallis said, should be just cause to warrant Caston's resignation. Caston said he had no intention of resigning.

The censure resolution calls for Caston to no longer represent ICC at statewide community college trustee or state-level events and that the issue be referred to a state ethics office for further action.

Under this proposed "insurance consortium", what company will now be making money from the nice, big insurance premiums for Independence Community College? Who owns the company? Who is the agent and who gets the commission? This is not a small amount of money, folks. Caston has raised some questions. And, what is wrong with buying insurance from a local company here in town which SUPPORTS our college? ICC, please get this subject out in the open instead of behind closed doors. The public finds it very misleading to only get bits and pieces of the issue, and miscommunication can be the result. Inquiring minds want to know.

Yea, well Fienen is no saint either. He should resign too. He helped ram the needless schools down everyone's thoat after repeated no votes against the issue. Now, the town is burdened with the result for decades to come. Why should Fienen care, he has his million dollar parts business deals.

This is old news people. The insurance issue was debated at length in an open meeting, all sides were heard, and it was covered extensively in both local papers. ICC bought a group policy from a Kansas company to save the taxpayers money, period. If a local company wanted to sell ICC a group policy, they could have done that. I saved tax money because the trustees made the right decision. Hoite Caston just wanted to be the center of attention.

Sorry, but the title of this thread gets it all wrong. Wally515 isn't who is against Hoite - everyone is! EVERY SINGLE TRUSTEE who was present for the vote voted AGAINST Caston. Sorry, but sometimes everyone decides to call out the whack job.

I'm kind of disappointed in DeFever not showing up at the meeting. I guess that it was too controversial for her to attend...

I just think that if a person says they are going to do something and run for election they should take the job seriously enough to make the meetings regardless of the issues being discussed...

val always has been a bit shallow at times. sort of concommital, would rather stand back, see where popular opinion lands . I worked for her a while back in the day when she and steve were a "team". now, I don't mean that to be negative. but, wome are like that sometimes when they are surrounded by "wannabe" alpha male types. I said "wannabe".

I think that sometimes HCaston asks sharp questions just like Bill Kelley did when he was on the Board. Both know that alot happens at ICC which the managers don't tell Board memebrs. The real clash going on is between Hoite and Pres. Barwick. Liz Moore made comments that show that she figured this out, although Barwick is silent and lets Wally read his words.

In looking at the cast of characters in this, it seems odd that one person was not mention at all as the one most likely to be the main figure who has pushed this issue. Who is the mind behind this who has managed to remain in the shadows? Could it be trustee Norman Chambers? If so, for what purpose?

Val talks a good story, but when the going gets tough, Val hides from hard decisions. Wonder if she was too busy Obama worshipping or in the bar sharpening her Cougar Claws.

Liz Moore looks like some wrinkled deer blinded by the headlights and is a Liberal so it's not surprising she would back some Bizarre, Weirdo Kook like Caston. He needs to get off the board and spend his time painting his house so it doesn't rot away. I guess you have to have some money to buy the paint.

If Val hadn't been on the state school board, no one would take her seriously as a trustee. She's a flighty, flaky gossip.

From the outside looking in, it doesn't seem that there's usually very much conflict at the college for the size of the organization. There's much more conflict in the school district and in city government, as examples. But when there is conflict at the college, I've notice that it always seems to be related to Hoite Caston in some way. David Wallis isn't the problem. He just joined the board, and I've been hearing problems about Hoite Caston virtually since he was elected two years ago. He appears to the common denominator in various conflicts, and when that happens, it means he's the likely cause of those conflicts.

Well, Confessor, she may have stood back from this issue too much. There comes a time when everyone must take a stand and face the cheers or the boos of those around us. On the other hand, it is very hard to do in a small town. Have YOU always been brave enough to speak up when it is required? Or do you, too, "stand back" and wait to see "where public opinion" is going before your voice is heard?

Read the Reporter article. Good headline, bad article. It sounded like it was written after consulting Topix and copying the title of this thread. Just because Wallis made the motions to kick Hoite off the board, that doesn't mean anything, since the whole board supported Wallis. Plus, there were lots of factual inaccuracies or important things left out. Why did it say that DeFever voted against the insurance consortium, when she wasn't even a board member at that time? Why did the paper say that Defevr was absent, when she was only absent for the Caston vote and then conveniently showed up? On the other hand, the Fienen quotes were great!

no, i always say what i think. i have some convictions. i have plenty of detractors. dont bother me none. i am not in public office however. i go against the grain a lot. plenty of people on here call me a bigot etc, get off the board. i dont say things to please people's ears. but maybe to just wake them up and see a different angle.

I am sorry everyone. I see this post has been without ooter and he is sure to respond to my post.

I have been reading all of these posts and the paper fail to understand why caston wants to be in a job that does not want him. What would a law suit solve?
All it will do is cost money and time for a job that does not pay a salary.

What is to gain. When someone does not want you take the message and leave. I myself understand that all to well. I ran for the board and came in fourth behind mr caston. The people elected him to office. He should not be thrown off the board. It is his right to sit on the board. The rest of the members have a majority, which makes him a non entity. Give him donuts and sandwiches and treat him well. Keep him calm.

Just remember at all the shootings that are taking place everyday. Don't want to here about it here in Indy.

Life is too short for all of this controversy.

Frank, the issue is what Caston does OUTSIDE the meetings, where he works tirelessly to hurt the college.
He's guaranteed to sue. He's in this for Caston, not ICC, and always has been. You would have actually worked to make the college a better place.
