Local worker wrote: I work the front register at one of the local businesses. An older guy comes in and is always positive and friendly. Somebody said he used to be a school teacher. I didn't go to school here so I don't know. I tell him to have a good day and he always smiles and says "Have a good life." That always makes me smile. Isn't it interesting how a few words of kindness can mean so much?

You people crack me up! No one will name a person that they think is nice. We don't want skeltons in our closet exposed. We all have them. I like a lot of people in town, but why would I name a friend of mine?????

Although the sales clerk said she didn't know the name of her pleasant customer was, he (or she) still acknowledged him (or her) as being nice.

My vote, hands down, would have to go to an old friend of mine that moved back to Indy a cpl of years ago. Over the past cpl of years since he's moved back, I've watched this kind-hearted gentle giant be continually used by the sad story vultures of Indy until he himself is now going to be homeless. It breaks my heart to see this big-hearted lug to be so used and abused by these ppl which unfortunately include some of his own younger generation of family. I've seen him change some lately, & not for the better I must add, as the harsh reality of being homeless creeps closer, but yet somehow he forces a smile & still goes right on helping. It tears me up inside that im not financially able to help him save his home, as i watch the very rats whom he has helped, abandon ship. I've asked him how he's doin & how he's able to soldier on. He simply replies... "Even tho I feel like I'm being slapped in the face for helping ppl, I must hold my head up & continue on doin what I feel is right. I remember seeing my father help ppl & live as honest as he could be, then get slapped in the face for it, then go right back to doin the same thing. I am my father's son, its just how we are. Some may call us stupid, but inside we know its the right thing to do."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Debbie Miller. She is really fighting for the citizens of Independence, KS. Such a nice and kind lady. Truly admire her spunk!:-)

Truly admire her spunk!:-) Debbie's mother Jeanne Eisenbise was one of the nicest people to ever live in Independence. She worked at the courthouse for many years, volunteered to help kids read when she retired, and was always so nice. I used to see her walking her little gray dog up and down Penn Avenue; she passed away a few years ago, and I miss having her in town.

I used to hate to go into Sayers. I walked in there one day with some canning questions and had a very good conversation with her. Since then everytime I go in there, we talk. Before you start complaining about a store, give them a second chance.
