I'm confused. The ban was on only Sunday and Monday. If they lifted the ban yesterday, won't people start using water like crazy today and deplete the water supply again (so another ban will be put on)? What has changed with the water supply that made them decide to lift the ban? Our area hasn't had hardly any rain, so wouldn't the river level be the same? Wouldn't it be best to leave the ban on to get the levels back up? I don't know, so hope you can help.

Modification of Water Emergency The City Commission met in an emergency special Commission meeting tonight and voted to modify the water emergency to allow businesses utilizing outside water to reopen. They also voted to allow swimming pools to open if they do not add any additional water. The ban on outside watering is still in effect. The City will continue to monitor the situation and if necessary will reinstitute further restrictions. Thank you all for your patience and your cooperation during this emergency.

So it IS ok to wash our cars at the car wash, but we have to let our vegetable gardens that we depend on die? That sounds about right for Independence. Always getting our priorities straight, that's us!

Always getting our priorities straight, that's us! I'm sure it has more to do with not shutting a business down that has financial obligations, It would be sad if someone got forclosed on because of a restriction placed by our city. Not good for the business', bank, or the citizens.. You really should think rationally, instead of just blowing stenchie air, and ignorant comments out of that mouth of yours!

The car washes need to stay closed until everyone gets to start watering again, especially if the shortage is so severe there's a mandatory ban against watering yards, plants, flowers, gardens, etc.

If that is the case then all of the businesses in Independence need to be closed. They all rely on water to stay in business. Drinks, dishes, cleaning etc. Give the car washes a break. I thought that they recycled their water from the smell of it anyway. Just keeping the lawn watering ban in effect cuts back on a lot of usage. Unfortunately all those beautiful lawns around the Country club will burn up.

Leave the decisions to someone that has a clue!!

Unfortunately, the people currently in public office DON'T HAVE A CLUE. If they did, they wouldn't allow car washes to be open at the same time they're disallowing people to water their gardens. The only reason the car washes were allowed to open is become their owners are country club buddies with some of the people in charge. It is nice to know that when water levels get so low we don't have drinking water, we will at least have nice, clean cars driving around Independence.

Maybe all businesses should close on Sunday. That would conserve a lot of water. The church pews would fill up, and maybe the rain would come afterwards!

You are talking about shutting down a business, effecting taxes, and the livelyhoods of people. If you're going to shut that business down, then you'd have to shut down all the business serving ice, washing dishes with water, detail shops, car lots that clean their cars, refinerys that cool with water, plants that use steam. Where you going to draw the line? Again leave the decision making to someone that has a train of thought, and a clue. You lack the ability to make rational decisions. You worry too much about country clubbers, and who they hang with. In fact you worry too much about other people, and too little about yourself. Get a life!

Kant feel Pietzsche wrote: <quoted text> Why you be hatin'? Sounds to me like "Agree" would fit right in with the typical politician. You choose: A city finds itself in a water crisis, so city leaders must make some tough choices. If you were one of those city leaders would you: 1. Ban any outdoor watering by individuals, including individuals whom have been nurturing a garden for months during the drought, and allow car washes to stay open? OR 2. Ban any outdoor watering with the exception of gardens, and also ban car washes? OR 3. Ban any outdoor watering with the exception of gardens, ban car washes between the hours of 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM, and also have all the restaurants reduce their business day by 30 minutes so they, too, could help conserve the water in the community? It would seem you favor option 1. Since that is exactly the option the city has chosen, it would also seem that YOU, not me, are the typical politician seen in Independence, Kansas. By the way, if Option 1 is NOT your choice, what would be your mandate for water rationing (since you have put yourself on such a high and mighty pedestal)?

I would do exactly as this city and most other cities have done in The past! Ban all outside watering that does not benefit the community! Ask people to conserve volunteerly until furthar notice. If it truly became a "crisis" which it is not yet, I wouldn't leave anything off the table for future bans. The leaders acted correctly for the current circumstances! The city did not say you couldn't water your lawn or your garden, they simply said you cannot water it with the community water supply, ie the city water! If you would like to haul your water to do it, or use another source not owned by the community , Knock yourself out!!! Stop being a whiner, and lazy, haul your water, from someone's pond!!

Yeah, all of us know someone with a few thousand extra gallons of water around laying around who would be happy to haul it to our houses so we can water our yard and flowers. They could haul it to our house, empty it in the big hole we all have in our yards to store it, and then we could pump it out with our garden hoses. With great ideas like yours, you should think about running for city office. You'd fit in with all our other great leaders who have the same brilliant problem-solving ideas, such as letting car washes operate when the City's water has been rationed by the state and when the City has had to hire an attorney to go to court in Topeka to try to get some water released from the Fall River Reservoir. Too bad they didn't do what Coffeyville did and sign an agreement with the state to hold some "emergency" water for Independence in reserve at the Elk City Reservoir. Although there would be an annual fee, at least we wouldn't have to pay more attorneys to make sure we have enough water to drink and to wash our cars.
