I am making this post to all of you out there who believe that Henry Williams and the Uppercut Boxing and Sharon Boyer learning center are worthy of you support. If not then skip this post. This program is becoming endangered. The landlord has raised the rent, and grants and funding money is drying up. I have been a supporter of this program from the beginning.(now in its 8th.year, or more. Now we need to raise funds for it to continue. We will take any amounts. Just a few bucks or small change. If you would like to help please email me at mccreb@aol.com and I will let you know where to send the money. If anyone has any ideas on how we can raise money, please let me know. We have been trying to come up with something and everything seems to be taken, golf tournaments and such. Thanks for reading this post. Frank

They attract more than just local people and bikers are always ready to help raise money for a good cause.

Frank Frank you might think about having a softball tournament to raise money. If you think the season is over you are right as far as rec teams but my daughter plays on a travel team and still goes to tournaments as do many area teams. A local tourney would be nice for a change. We have three state champion teams here so i think interest would be received. I would help with the tourney as would several other parents im sure.

The only problem is that would just put a band-aid on the problem, not cure it long-term. I've recently noticed there doesn't seem to be as much activity at that club. Has participation dropped off significantly? If so, would it be possible to move the club to a smaller and less expensive facility? For example, could the club move to the Ash Center and offer it as another youth activity or would the costs and liability be too prohibitive? I think that location would work well as many young people from the apartments nearby may benefit from the program. Could the club SHARE facilities with the Karate Studio with each group meeting at different times? Just some thoughts.

Studies show that children (especially boys from homes without fathers) do far better in every way if they are involved in an organized activity such as Uppercut Boxing. Since we have so many children in that situation, it would be tragic to see the boxing club and learning center go. Would it be possible for the school district to use the money it was going to use for that digital sign, to pay for a one year trial program in which Uppercut Boxing would have its program in the Ash Youth Center? To me, spending money that would help children do better, especially in school, would be a more sensible way for the school district and taxpayers to spend money than some fancy, flashing sign that will only provide information that could be provided FREE elsewhere (internet, radio, etc.). In my book, what's best for children should always come before glitz. I would hope Mr. Schimdt and the school board would share that philosophy and give this some serious thought.

Mr. Schmidt is on the board of directors. I am sure if he could have done anything he would. I will give him a call and ask. Don't cost anything to ask. Thanks for the direction.

Boxing at school should be outlawed. It is a violent sport and dangerous for possible head injuries. ANY combative or contact sport even with use of protective gear worn that results in injury should result in prosecution of the people facilitating the activity. There are many other ways to inspire children rather that seeing them become proficient at knocking one another in the head. A lawsuit must be considered on persons facilitating this activity if these kids are hurt.

If you don't want to box, then don't box, if you don't want your children to box, then don't let them box, or play football. But if I choose to let my child play a contact sport, or if I want to play a contact sport, then it should be my decision, not yours.. Because YOUR opinion is just that, yours! Thats all! If we could all have our own way then no one would have their way!

However, if you put your child in danger and they get hurt, you should face criminal charges. If you yourself were to hit your own child in the head you would go to jail. Why shouldn't you go to jail for allowing someone else to hit your child in the head, protected or not. I will be looking into suing whoever continues to promote this activity and or club.

However if that is the case you would have to put your child in a cocoon. The uppercut club is so much more than the fighting. Mostly every sport and activity has an element of risk. Sport has been handed down from the ancient Greeks and has been proven to help develop children and adults alike.

We need to consider a meeting soon to discuss the legal recourse needed to stop this violence. I will contact attorney's in Wichita and Kansas City on Monday.

Using this brain inspiration, we also need to stop football, soccer, bicycle riding, and tons of other sports that provide young people priceless life and social skills. Would you agree?

Would you agree? None of those sports or activities have the goal of hitting someone in the head, repeatedly to score points. So no, I don't agree. Everything requires a little risk, but I don't think you're able to see that you can compare any of those sports to boxing.

In football, they are repeatedly hit in the head, neck, back, arms, legs, torso, etc., etc., etc. My guess is the number of injuries and seriousness of injuries is far greater than in football than in boxing.

I'd also cite a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and organizion made up of doctors with the well-being of children in mind. They find that boxing IS dangerous for anyone under 18-19, because their brain is still going through changes and developing. If you'd like to read that, here's a link. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content...
