4 Ilion DPW workers last night reported they ran over a 14 foot snow snake.

DEC officer's said it was one of the largest snow snakes they have seen in years. DEC officer's were called to upper Otsego Street by mutral aid around 2AM to humanly destroy the snake.

I talked with one of the drives this afternoon at Crossway Tavern who said this was the second snow snake he seen in 30 years of service to the village.

The above driver was taken to St Lukes Hospital and was treated for abrasions to the face and hands and for mental trauma.

Ilion Police sent the snake to Cornell University for study.

Usually snow snakes are not seen this time of year. DEC said the warm weather might have awaken the snake out of its dormant state.

I called the Ilion police and they said they did not have a police report as it is under DEC jurisdiction. There is no danger to the resident of the village and the snow snakes are not poisonous.

I saw a 12 foot snow snake when I was a Boy Scout at Camp Rusell, 30 years ago, but 14 feet is really really big. Glad no one was seriously injured. I hope the driver gets the mental health care that is needed to overcome the tramua. You are correct, snow snakes are not poisonous, but they can strangle you it you avoid procations. Distracting them with smoores is always a good tactic.

Yes they do. It depends on the amount and texture of the snow. We now have a perfect storm for large snow snakes. Oh, they also like hot dogs with mustard. I'd suggest, if you go out, carry one in a zip lock bag.

The employee has now filed a lawsuit against the village claiming that he can no longer work. Village officials are still trying to determine if he will be able to collect full disability.

Yeah, there goes our tax dollars at work. The CEC will sue the village for not controling the snow snake population, the emplyee will so the village, PETA will chime in.... This will be one nasty snow mess. I also noticed all the snow people melted last weekend. How sad was that?

Alright - I can't help it - this is from my father in law - "How do you tell the differance between a snowman and a snowwoman?"

Snow balls.

Sorry! LOL

Opps, DEC - and controlling, and employee. Sheesh I wish I had reviewed prior to posting, but watching TV at the same time is not a good thing.

I can remember when i was a young man in the 1950's were used to see snow snake in the very early spring out by our cow barn.

They do grow to great lengths. I guess the largest i ever seen would range form 12 to 14 feet. This is a normal for out area.

When i was in the Air Force station in South Dakota
we would see them on the runways. Finally the AIR Force had attack dogs patrol the area.

They are not poisonous but have a hell of a bite.
We used to shoot them with a 410 ga shot gun or a 357 pistol.

We lost a cat (muffin) to a snow snake. But she was a useless pussy just like my x-wife.

Snow snakes have been the bane of the county for decades. They are very dangerous when they think they have been seen. Their bite is chilling and they can be very powerful if allowed to coil around your body. I once had one follow me to Crossway's. It left me when it realized that I was actually going into the bar.( They have a very select palate and Crossway's Tavern is not to their taste.)

I will agree that hot dogs are an effective food distraction. I have found that kielbasa is much better due to the German/Polish influence of our area. Good luck to the DPW worker. He has a long recovery.

I called a colleague of mine at Cornell university where the snow snake was transported after being ran over by the ilion DPW.

The snow snake measurement was 14 feet 3 1/2 inches. The snake was a male estimated 3 years old.
(in human terms about 15).

The weight was estimated at 22 pounds. Missing some guts.

Dr. Sin Ache PhD, of Cornell said the snake was a male indicated by the small adolescent horns on the frontal lobes. The cause of death was crushing trauma of the 16 -22 vertebrate upper and lower quadrant. Death was due to affixation and massive blood loss

The snake autopsy was preformed by Dr. Sin Ache.
Cornell University has preserved the snake in a chemical bath and will be located in a place of zoological honor next to the selacamp.

The American Zoological Society wishes to express our deepest appreciation to the DPW for sending the snow snake for our examination.

The only animal that can kill a snow snake is a White arctic mongoose,I saw a snow snake fighting a arctic mongoose once and it lasted for 6 hours. Years ago a 18 foot snow snake crawled up my girlfriend's pants and at first she thought it was my manhood.

I was sorry to hear that a snow snake was ran over by a snow plow driver. Thank God it wasn't a small kid. How in the hell could they have missed a 14 foot snow snake.
WLFH radio reported this tragic accident. I brought tears to my eyes.
I bet we have more of these proud reptiles killed in the future due to global warming.
What is the world coming to.
