No end in sight for Ilion's 10 year-long grocery shortage

Full story: Your News Now

A Herkimer County village is dealing with its own grocery store issues. The Village of Ilion hasn't had a full-service grocery store for nearly 10 years.

They're starting to do some testing down there to see how we can do that," Stephens said. "The only involvement the village has is to hope that the outcome at the end is good.
Normally getting government out of the way or non invoved in private sector development is a good thing. The above quote by Ilion Mayor,John Stephens is troubling however, in that it shows that he and others on the Village Board, don't understand or accept the concept of how to help businesses relocate or get of their way
Reference is made to the Village of Herkimer and their retail and business success, we should also look at the Village of Frankfort as well.
Why have these communities been more sucessful in economic rvitalization, with both having at least one grocery store?
Well if we look at what is protrayed in the press, both communities have secured grants, and worked co-operatively with the assistance of Federal, State, and County governments in securing that vacant contaminated private propreties are quickly and adequately cleaned and marketed. Walmart,Hanaford,Lowes in Herkimer and the former Fork and Hoe property are just some exampels of success. Can Ilion say the same, and why not?
Duofold 25 years plus,The old Clifford fuel company, the former Red Barrel Property,Wood's tire, and perhas soon Remingtn School property are just a few.
Increasing taxes and utiliy rates also do not help in economic recovery.Traffic patterns in the village are terrible at best.
Back to the qoute by our Mayor, success in these other villages I would contend came from much more than "hope" and being idol bystanders.Planning communication, enforcement of codes, invest in infrastrucure, and most importantly a willingness, and not going at it alone are what is moving these communities forward, and leaving Ilion behind.
These commuities have learned that there is much more to government and serving the public than just providing public employemnt and good benefits.

Grocery store chains make their siting decisions based on data, i.e., demographics information (including median household income), competing stores and the potential for profitability.

Ilion already has Aldi's, and unfortunately that is the only place that Ilion's low-income, welfare-dependent population can afford to shop. Do not expect a grocery store to open in Ilion any time soon.

However, word on the street is that Wendy's Hamburgers has identified a prospective location in Ilion and is negotating to open a Wendy's restaurant.

A Wendy's restaurant would be highly profitable and good news for Ilion, given the inordinate appetite for fast food (unhealthy though it is) among the generally overweight and low-income village citizens.

You are a degenerate Moron. Most if not all supermarkets will accept food stamps, so that theory is out the door. Ilion is the most populus community in the County, if Mohawk, and Frankfort supermarkets can survive in these communities why not Ilion?
What is that elusive factor? Answer: Politics, taxes, infrastucture etc.
These communities collectively work harder for it and offer more.
Oh yea, and how ironic that it is Ilion's low-income residents, that has the largest School district and will host the High school in a Merger. All of which you promote and support.
The poor are good enough when they fill our prisons, schools, and obtain federal and state educational aid, and enable dic%s like you to have a good income.

Aren't several of the properties mentioned above contaminated? If they are, get ready for a really long wait to get on the Brownfields list for remediation.

The "elusive factor," as you put it, why Ilion cannot support a supermarket is the same factor that has made it the least desirable valley community, with the:

Lowest median income
Poorest test scores
Highest dropout rate
Highest unemployment rate

That factor being the general laziness and stupidity of the overall Ilion population. It is not coincidence that Ilion residents are, for instance, substantially fatter than the people in Frankfort. Ilionites in general have shown a profound disinclination to work and little interest in bettering their community or their own lot.

The main activity of many Ilionites is, sadly, drinking.

Frankfort and Mohawk markets fill a niche. They also have a long history and a well established following. Now if the owners of those two stores partnered up and brought the best of each to Ilion, that would work.

As far as a Chain opening in Ilion to compete with those two, Wal-Mart and Hannaford’s...keep dreaming.

Goes to prove my point,Duofold recieved Brownsfield funding some years ago, but owner and Village did not act.
Woods tire recieved funding for cleanup from "Renew New York" still sits.
Fork and Hoe contaminated, being torn down and developed,Walmart / Hanafords contaminated, remediated and developed.
Get the picture, Ilion politicians have been and are ineffective.

Actually NYS DEC decides when Brownfields projects are scheduled. They ran out of money last year. There is little money for remediation this year. However, the local government needs to push it forward.8645

Pure grocery chains themselves are a dying breed. Over half the groceries in the US are sold in WalMart (does not include Sam's), with Target and The Dollar Store getting in the game as well. The reality is that the VALLEY could not support another grocery chain, no less Ilion themselves. This is similar to the valley school merger issue. In this case, the market and the retailers imposed a merger on you because their is NOT enough dollar volume to pay the bills in each individual town.

Hannaford and Aldi's are global operators that have the infrastructure to handle small volume stores. Herkimer has the edge for retailers because of the traffic flow on Rte 5. No other village locally has that volume.

I went to Ilion HS in the late 60s and clearly recall seeing a bunch of big items about 50 yards from the tennis courts. Some of us would go up the hill in the field hockey area to retrieve balls.

But what you say is totally off topic. This topic is about the lack of grocery shopping in Ilion. This is NOT about the merger. Get off the rant.
