Editorial: Citizens tossed from city park

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

Our view: Four councilors couldn't forge a compromise on disc golf, but kicking hundreds of people out of the park won't work.

Now I can blame someone else for not feeling welcome in her bike shop, maybe I shouldn't have been kicking myself for going in and looking around at new bikes. I am glad I did not go back.

Andy Holcombe said the area needed "an opportunity to heal."

If we would only recognize this worship of nature as the pagan religion that it is, we could then ban this mix of religion and government.

good point BIC!

Andy Holcombe needs to get off his own agenda, the one he rode into office on, and start listening to his constituency.

Hey Andy, you're the mayor, not the king!

Get ready for Mayor Schwab people, you know that's what's going to happen.

Go watch "Evita", and you'll see what I mean.

this editorial is great, and touches on many of the points i have.

people will still play the course
people will burn gas, clog highways, and contribute to al gores global warming in the pursuit of play at other courses

finally most of the cyclists i have talked to have vowed to never again spend a dime in campus bicycles

She just gave me more reason to shop in her store. I know many cyclist that feel the same. As far as listening to their constituents they listened to me. I'm sorry your disc golf is being removed from the park but I saw the damage it was doing. Why don't you put all this anger into finding a new place.

Ban people from upper park! We must make it safe for small furry animals.

Bidwell ranch is the most perfect park in the world! Paid for by taxpayers and none of them are allowed on the property. It doesn't get any better.

People must not be allowed to have fun on taxpayer owned property.

What damage? Erosion spots in the ground where the tees and poles are? If there is any such damage, it is caused by feet walking on the same spots over and over, not discs.

In any regard, bike tires with a human being aboard will pretty much do the same, if not greater damage, so I think its a bit hypocritical for people engaging in one recreational activity to advocate a different one not be able to enjoy the park.

And if Ann Schwab owns a bike shop used her position in a manner to help further her business, I'd say that constitutes a conflict of interest. I just hope she realizes that a lot of cyclists also play disc golf.

This is why we have bike TRAILS and hiking TRAILS in the park. Signs are posted asking not to go off the trails. Disc golf is not a game where you use specific trails. and I highly doubt her decision was based on her bike business.

Have you played disc golf? Or any type of golf? The object is to get a projectile from a fixed starting point, called a TEE, to a fixed finishing point called a HOLE,(although in disc golf the "hole" is something above ground). There is a fixed specified path between these two points called a FAIRWAY. Much like a bike trail, this is the path you are supposed to stay on, Which is why a golf layout is called a COURSE. People aren't just flinging their discs randomly at anything. There's actually an objective to the game.

And yes, occasionally shots go errant, but this is not the norm. If there is some TRULY sensitive vegetation in the vicinity of these courses which could be a frequent landing spot for these errant shots, for God's sakes redesign or move them accordingly. Removing them is just going to encourage more "bootleg" golf where trees will become the objects to hit instead of avoid.

I needed to visited the site myself. I saw trails heading in so many directions. I could see a so called "fairway" with so many trails coming and going to the "tee". But what I saw was no course as you call it. The land is harshly trampled. You could see what the course was suppose to look like before disc golf by looking down the road at areas around the course. Yes I've played traditional golf once. I hated it, and I love frisbee. I probably would love disc frisbee but I really love our park and want it taken care for my kids and grandkids. I teach my kids to stay on trails, pick up trash... etc. leave it the way you found it. And as far as what's norm, everyone probably starts out as a beginner and I'm sure their disc does not go exactly where they want it to.
I agree, this may encourage more "bootleg" golf but I for one will stay on the city council for working something out in another area. and thanks for not just calling me names as so many do and sticking with the topic.

oh, you don't like namecalling, but you can say whatever you want about other people, eh? I love these accusations - what proof do you have the damage was done by disc golfers? You got pictures of damage happening, or are you, like the Fascists of Bidwell Park, just pointing a horny finger?

there are tire tracks on every trail in the park. What hiker hasn't been run off a trail by a bike? Well, this hiker/hucker won't be run off again, get ready to mudwrestle for possession, anonymous self-centered local cyclist-type-person. I fart in your general direction - sorry it's that free trade coffee.

wow Ryan Olson, you been holding out on your artistic talents there - more cartoons from Ryan Olson!!!

And I'm not just saying that because I agree, I'd rather see a local artist in that spot than those tired wire cartoons.

Friends of Bidwell Park are a hate group. They don't care about the environment, they like to hurt people, and generate more money for studies.

that and most of their governing board resides in tehama county.

Anyone hear about American canyon a few years back? If i remember right one of the council members was found to be living in dixon which was a violaion of the rules because you must live within the county.

why is it that the CHICO city council which is located in BUTTE county allows these people who arent from our town or county to dictate butte county issues.
