Without disclosing my position or affiliation, most of the abuse on handicap parking begins at the doctor's office where applications are being signd for individuals that may not always need them. Few doctors follow the true guidelines for authorizing placards and plates.

I thought Patrece did a good job of pointing out problems with the Handicapped system, and those who don't show a plaquard. I have asthma, and kidney problems, but walk fairly well. My problem is that people don't think I am Handicapped. Some have questioned me to my face about using a Handicapped spot. Not all handicaps are visible.

I just watched this report on the news cast and found one thing disturbing. Why are there so many people not displaying the sings? Is it because they only want others to know they are handicapped when it is beneficial to them?

It's crooked to see people act that way and do such things. If you are truly handicap then I think you need a plate that says so and in order to get the plate you have to fill out a lengthy report at the BMV and a doctor must send a form granting the necessity for such plate. This is not to inconvenience those that truly are handicap, but at least will weed out the front row parkers.

i know how he feels. we have a child wheelchair bound from c.p. and everytime we go to terre haute walmart south we get in a predictament as well. we have a wheelchair assemble van with a lift. we always park up front at the parking spaces where the lines are for a lift to go out. i would say 9 out of 10 times someone always parks in those blue marked lines and blocking our lift to go out. it is veryyyy agrivating especially when you have a grocery cart full of groceries a child in a wheelchair and now you have to move your van just so you can get your kid in the van as well as your groceries. we have called police a few times and they say they are on other runs right now and one time we waited a half hour and a cop never showed up. more i think about it the more i think the people that are in wheelchairs and are capable should be the ones writing the tickets out to those people that are parked wrong. another is these people parking in front of the store and coming out with cart of groceries blocking the traffic and so forth i feel the same way he does the white family bill martha christy cody and justin 5755 n annapolis rd bloomingdale, in 47832

I agree with DeeDee's comments. Also Patrece if you observed long enough I am sure you learned that 99% of the abusers of these parking spaces are the very ones who have the tags or placards. I do not have need of handicap tags, but it has long been one of my pet peeves to see how those with these tags are the very ones that will park on the striped lines intended to help those like Clark who must use a wheel chair or chair lift!

I am not handicapped nor is anyone in my family but it really bugs me to see people driving these big SUVs and pick up trucks with the handicapped plates and/or placard. If people are so handicapped that they need the tags to park in these spots then they don't need to be driving around in SUVs or pickup trucks. I believe also that if you aren't in a wheelchair or use a walker or cain to assist you with walking then you don't need the placard or plate. Even if you have asthma or some other disability, if it doesn't affect how far you can walk then you don't need the plcard/tag

My wife had a handicapped plate on her car when she was taking care of her mother. We always parked in normal spots if her mother wasn't present. I wonder how many of those who in the same situation are taking advantage that way.

She had little use of her legs and needed a walker. She also had dementia and believed that I was forcing her to use the walker to humiliate her. I had to get out of the car fast and get to her before she would try to walk away without it. In one day, I got yelled at twice for using a handicap space and not using it. Once because a man saw me jump from the car and run around it. He sat there and called me names, regardless of the fact that I kept telling him it wasn't my car, until I reached in and helped my aunt out. It shut him up fast and he took off like the coward he was. After I had taken her home, I took the car to the pharmacy to get her meds. I parked in the very last space on the lot farthest from the pharmacy. As I headed there, a woman in a car followed me the entire way cussing me out for using a regular spot when I had a handicap plate. She didn't seem to care that it wasn't my car or that it had several empty spaces closer to the store around it. I did the right thing concerning that car, but it didn't seem to do me much good when dealing with judgmental onlookers.

I think that the one's that are guilty of these temporary plates. The one's( short term limitations ) that continue use of these temporary window placards once they are better. These are the people that I want to just give them a piece of my mind. Someone that is taking a spot from someone else who really needs it. I work at a local business and have seen it a number of times where parking lot is packed and they do not want to have to park very far away because they are in a hurry. They whip that thing up onto their mirror run in and run out in less than 5 minutes. To me these people when they move that fast do NOT have a limitation. Other than maybe being disrespectful by taking that spot from someone else that really NEEDS it. These are the people that make me ILL... And I do know that all disiblities are not Physical and able to be seen. But have some RESPECT. Just because you are in a HURRY and need to hurry in and out of a place. ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO BE DISRESPECTFUL TO SOMEONE WHO MAY REALLY NEED THAT SPACE BY THE FRONT DOOR.

Wendi, Don't judge all people who have a hanging placard to be frauds. My 74 year old mother is in the need of replacement of both knees yet cannot have one due to blood clotting issues. She has a hanging placard as opposed to a permanent plate because they have three automobiles which they drive regularly and simply transfers the tag from car to car. BTW...all you have to do is look at the tag as it hangs from the mirror, the expiration date is clearly written on both sides.

On the issue of handicapped parking, I'd like to share an incident which happened last weekend at Union Hospital.
My mother was about to pull into a space when another car came from the opposite direction and cut her off to pull into the space. She parked in another space and we watched the driver of the car who was a young girl run into the hospital. This car had no permit whatsoever.
My first thought was that perhaps it was an emergency and she parked illegally because she had to get to a family member but when we got inside, she was sitting in the lobby chatting on the cellphone. I spoke with a security guard who said the routinely give non-enforceable warnings but the hospital won't allow them to do anything else unless the car is parked in a doctor's space.
Anyway...I waited until the girl came down and approached her about her selfishness. She said, "yeah I know but I was just going in for a few minutes".

I am disabled and there are tims when I can walk other times when I MUST use a scooter to get around. During those times I can walk I am still in alot of pain and the farther I walk the more the pain increases and the longer it lasts (Days- Weeks). So I know the situation with parking in HC spots in TH. The one way I found to truely combat the problem being almost no local business is willing to ticket, I use my video cammera and take pictures of the offender and if asked I tell them the video is for a documentary. I have gotten some angry responses and excuses but I rarely see them again. I am thinking of a web site dedicated to these videos and similar. BTW When I NEED a spot and I find one without a tag or plate I will sometimes block the vehicle in with my vehicle and watch from my "Scooter" as the person tries to find the owner of the Van with the ramp on the ground so it can't be towed away. Also DAV plates ARE disabled plates in IN. Considering the number of people who don't know that I requested the wheelchair logo on the DAV Yellow plate. It cut down on obnoxious people. Speaking of UNion Hospital check these pictures taken of the smokers in front of the NO smoking sign one while the security gaurds and police are there. Still no action taken. But you know I have seen too many people that have abused the situation of the hanging placards in their car. Because I have seen too many of those people that have RAN in and RAN out quicker than I. It is those people that I am talking about. As I said I have nothing against those people that simply need them. But those that have them because at one time needed them and NO longer need them because they needed them temporaily and not permenant. But the person that used the person that ran in union hospital and found in the lobby talking on the cell phone. Those are the people that I am talking about. So please please understand that I am not criticizing your mother.
