If they do not have enough book for the students they have, how are they going to supply the books for the 90 more coming next year?

I really think that it is a little late in the school to order books now. Need to order for the next year so they will be there when the kid start the new year.

here's another story. they're closing Frisco City, a school with 240 students in K-12 that survived the great depression, but they're not closing Monroe Intermediate School in north Monroe Co. and it has less than 50 students in K-8 grades, nor or they closing the alternative school (for students with discipline problems). It averages a half dozen students at one time and has a principal, asst principal, secretary and two teachers employed. It's not rational to close Frisco and not close MIS and the Alternative school, too.

my guess is that Excel School and the Monroeville schools have plenty of books, probably enough to share with Blacksher's kids.

Mrs rawls sent someone around to pick up all the extra books. My daughter only got a history book from JF shield that is the only book she has out of all her classes.

Sorry, but if your child is failing math in the 11th grade, it's because she's not studing. It has nothing to do the not having a book. 11th grade math teachers do an excellant job. Since when does a student complain about not having homework. Someone's just trying to start trouble. News people get our facts straight but opening your can of worms.

Why don't the staff, parents nor community of the Frisco City district not know about how many students are going to what school. All the other schools seem to know how many students they are getting and we are lost in Frisco. Lack of communication from our Board of Education to us in the Frsco City area is terrible. We should have been given first hand information because it is our school that's closing. We deserve better treatment and respect.

I am also a Senior attending J. U. Blacksher High School. The classes that do have book shortages are very "hands-on" classes. Teachers will sit down with us, attempt to help us with all they can, and are willing to let us bring home books that they have. It is not only the strongest or smartest survive among the students. All students, regardless of what diploma choice, have equal opportunities to learn and succeed in the classroom.

Although we do have a shortage of books, and the school year is about to end in May. Books for the next school year and the remainder of the current school year would be a nice thing to plan for and have. Everyone does need to realize we are in proration, and our nation's economy is poor at this particular time. We did not anticipate the increased enrollment at our school this year.

Our Senior Literature teacher also allows us to use notes, study guides, and the book on our comprehensive tests. All of our teachers make sure that we are receiving all that we need to master our core classes' objectives.

For the parents that are concerned that their child does not have a book, why not ask the teacher for the ISBN? The majority of the textbooks used at Blacksher are not new editions so they can be found very cheap (10-15 dollars) on sites like Amazon, etc... My son came home with a math book this year that looked like it was ready to fall apart and I took the ISBN went to Amazon and purchased the book used (looked brand new) for $5. It will be donated to the school after this school year. What we need are active parents willing to do what it takes for their child to get a good education. When a school board has to borrow money to make payroll, how do you think they can afford to purchase more books. Everyone is doing the best they can in these economic times...it's time for parents to do their part!!!

As a student i am shocked. I am an advanced level student and my classes are easy as they can be...Miss Bell is a standard level student.. not saying that there is a difference in intelligence but the standard class is an easy step by step class .. Books are not a need in core classes.. Also id like to point out the part where Bell argues about no books but at the end of the interview she contradicts herself saying "I got 56 days of school left so whats the point of getting a book when you have 56 days left?"

As for providing books for the incoming Frisco City students; the books Frisco City has currently will provide for their incoming students. I agree that parents at Frisco should have some clue as to where their child will attend next year and, if their school has not provided this information, the parents should call the superintendent directly to ask.

Purchasing more textbooks might be a good cause for the PTO to get behind or concerned parents may want to organize a fund-raiser to purchase textbooks for the upcoming year. Do a yard sale called "Bargains for Books" or a bake sale called "Baking for Books." There all all kinds of solutions available. Be proactive!!!

J.U Blacksher, why complain now about books, just tell the truth you don't want Frisco City kids there nor in Excel which those school have always got the best, Frisco don't have any books and soon want have a school, best thing you can do is keep protesting so our kids want have to come to the best schools in the county or so you think. The kids are out of zone anyway and they're over crowded. Have you been to Excel, Blacksher and Monroeville? If the board made everybody go to there zone it wouldn't be a problem with books, school closing or low enrollment. Its so much crime cover up---- just a big problem combining rival schools together. This all with the zoning that been under the cover for so long, should be addressed. Excel,Uriah, and Monroeville, sign the petition to help keep Frisco open.
Then we will have Bake sales, and a book sale to help raise money to buy books.

The student who represented our school was not even in school yesterday; in fact, she misses quite often with unexcused absences or with check-outs. Please do not judge this situation based on one student, whom may I remind you was not in school yesterday and misses quite often. I have attended this school since I was in kindergarten. Our teachers go above and beyond to make sure we have what we need, and quite often spend their own money to do so. All students are given the same opportunities. Why would any student complain about being able to finish homework in class? Teachers use their planning time to make copies for students who do not have books. Thus, no student is doing without what he/she needs to pass a class. If a student is failing, maybe that student should come to school more, study more, and accept opportunities that teachers offer to help him/her. Also, why should a parent wait until school is almost out to complain about a lack of books? No one at this school is suffering because of lack of books. If the parents of those few who do not have textbooks are so concerned, get up and help with any situation you feel hinders your child's education instead of calling news stations to be a tattle-tale. Have you ever heard of being the solution to a problem instead of the fuel that flames the fire? People with class want to help instead of constantly complaining about a problem. So many of my teachers have told me, "EDUCATION SEPARATES PEOPLE." So parents, help your child's school: be a volunteer, help the county have an excess of money so we can purchase everything a child needs, be a positive influence on your child and not some person who stirs up trouble and does not gather all of the facts before you go running off at the mouth. Please do not judge our school, school board, community, superintendent, our school's administrators, and student body based on one student's comments, especially a student who does not understand the importance of education, attendance, self-discipline, self- motivation, and responsibilty. If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all; and when you do speak, make sure the truth comes out of your mouth. I love J. U. Blacksher School, and I have never felt like I was not being given the education I deserve.

I am reading this story in disbelief. People are talking and commenting about things they really no nothing about. Teachers are charged with providing students with what is contained in the Alabama Course of Study Manual. Textbooks that teachers have in their classroom are resources of information and do not even have to be used. As long as the students are receving instruction from that Course of Study IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE THE MATERIAL COMES FROM! Teachers and other people in the education field are always getting the bad in of the deal and I am TIRED of IT!!! People need to start appreciating education workers more or just walk a day in a teacher's shoes!
Remember, where ever you are today a teacher helped you get there!!!!!!!

Concern Citizen,
I'm fine with having Frisco City kids attend Blacksher. I really don't know who you may be referring to. It isn't/wasn't my decision to close Frisco and I don't really know the reasoning behind it. I understand how you could be upset with Frisco closing....as a resident of Frisco City. I'm sure your feelings or no different than my husband's parents had when they decided to create Hillcrest and close Repton High School. No one likes change....but the way to deal with it is to be proactive!

It is clear that there will not be one responsible party or one place to seek resolution; but, that it will take ALL OF US (working -- and praying together). If you see something you can do to help, do it. If you don't see something, ask God to guide your actions.

no one is saying that the teacher at Blacksher is not going to every length to help our kids. Blacksher has the best teachers. But dont you think it would make their job less stressful if they didnt have to make copies of pages. And as far as complanning so late in the year. i have been calling the board of education every month asking where are they books at. That they told me was order. My child makes straight A's and has done so since beginning school. Let's also dont forget that Blacksher was one of the school that fail the Al state test.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Taurus

Make a big effort to spend time with people you didn't see on Christmas Day, especially if they're older than you or are having a bad time at the moment. You're brimming over with compassion and empathy, which will be really appreciated by anyone who's on the receiving end of them. You're also in the mood to make allowances for people, and that will help enormously.
