I guess you could always move somewhere with absolutely no gangs. Where would that be? Probably the same place where there are no jobs, and no people. Gangs are really no issue in Huntsville except for in some very small pockets. Mosquitoes are more dangerous.

I posted a comment on here just asking other parents if they had heard anything about such....that was is January!!!! I just checked that comment again and not one parent has commented on it in 3 months. Parents that don't care about the possibility of a gang in the community they live in.....yea , that's a great place to live!! I don't understand how parents can be so uninvolved in issues that effect their children and their community. I just re-posted 2 polls, maybe the parents in Huntsville will care enough ,if all they have to do is click on an answer! Hmmmguess we'll see! Other thatn that I love Huntsville! 2 great malls and a lot of shopping plazas. As for empolyment, they've got enough for them plus all the rest of us that choose to live in surrounding communtities and drive back and forth!:) Check out the school systems on line first, I think its greatschools.com or something like that.

I actually grew up in Hartselle, AL and from what I remember the only thing to do there is to drive around the McDonald's or go to a pasture and drink. In which case a teenager got killed from drunk driving every year of my High School life. I am not saying that it is that way now but as far as people in Hsv. having their head in the sand that is ridiculous and comes from ignorous of our city. Yes it is bigger than your backyard that is why you have to do your research before you drop your kids off at the local skating rink and you may not can leave them unattended if you want to be a parent that is really involved or don't trust what you have taught your children. Overall we have movie theatres, malls, teenagers that are very close knit and stay at different peoples houses when socilizing and don't go hunt for pastures. We also have many church youth groups for kids to get involved in, which allows them to learn what to lean on and stand strong with their friends against gangs and never becoming a part of them. I have lived in Washington D.C. and taught at a private school there where children were scared to take public transportation home. So overall Huntsville is a really great mix of having some things to do without getting totally lost in the mix of a big city. However, if I had never left Hartselle then I would not be educated that bad is everywhere and you have to be aware of your surroundings, your kids temptations, and you just might have to be more involved than you want to be. For instance not leaving them at a skating rink in a city that is not your own until you personally have tested the waters. Good Luck with your kids it is hard to know when you can loosen the strings!

I plan on moving to Huntsville as soon as I get a job there. I am excited that my son will be able to go to the space camp. It's a beautiful area and much more to do there than there is here in Jacksonville, NC! I'm sure, like every place, it has its ups and downs. However, I'm happy to be making the move.

Thank for the link and information. I was recently offered a position with a company in the area. After visiting Huntsille/Madison, our minds were quickly made up. It is absolutely beautiful.

People can and do complain about every town, city, state
in the US - those people won't be happy anywhere.
I've lived in many places and find that southerners are
great people - who else stops their car on a four lane
highway to let pedestrians cross? Roanoke and surrounding
areas do just that.

My BFF has lived in Huntsville nearly half her life. My husband and I usually go down to visit. The people are friendly, but the BBQ sucked.

Nothing more to do there than it was in my ole' Kentucky town.:)

Hi I live in Decatur Al ( about 15 min away for Huntsville). I have live here for about 10 years now. I have to say if you are not from here you are not apart of the people here. We stay in our on little group and we are pushed away from a lot of the people that have lived here there hole live. So good luck with that.
There is a lot to do here there is a water park in Decatur. Hiking in every town around here. There is a lot to do here just be safe and check it out before you go and do it. God Bless and hope for a safe trip here

I think compared to most of the rest of the nation, Huntsville has an affordable cost of living. There are great schools in this area (like Bob Jones and some private schools) and it is continuing to grow. More schools, restaurants and retail spaces are popping up. There are things to do here, especially if you get involved in a community organization or church groups.

As far as social things for you, there are sites like MeetUp.com , Facebook and http://www.rocketcitysingles.com that have active Huntsville-based groups that do things together. I think Huntsville is a great place to raise kids...big enough for a good education, diversity and opportunities, while still being small enough to not be swallowed whole by rough urban life.

Washington bigwigs are gonna close Redstone and Marshall and send all those jobs elsewhere. There won't be a job for hundreds of miles. Housing prices will drop to nothing, and it'll become a ghetto like Detroit. Anyone with money in the bank will cut outta town. Believe me, you're best off stayins where you're at.
