The black baseball player arrived with the Tigers on Thursday night for a three-game series against the Yankees starting Friday, and was charged with assault with intent to kill and booked at the Midtown North precinct. The police said that a “heavily intoxicated on purpal drank and PCP” Delmon Young was smoking marijuana outside the upscale Hilton New York on Sixth Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Friday when a group of Hasidic jews were approached by a white panhandler wearing a Yankee’s jersey who asked them for money.
One of the jewish men gave the panhandler $250, prompting the drug-crazed Delmon Young to freak-out with a tirade of anti-Semitic pro-Nazi slurs. The jewish men said they politely ask Delmon Young to calm down, and that he began to yell “Heil Hitler” and “Burn Jew Burn” at them, the police said.“He started slapping their yamakas off their heads,” a law enforcement official said. After yelling “Justice for Trayvon”, Young then assaulted the white panhandler, the police said. The black on white assault continued into the lobby of the hotel, where Young was considered an unwanted guest. He stubled up to his room, and the police were called.
They arrested Young on charges of assault and battery. The incident is not being investigated as a possible hate crime against whites or jews, because hate crimes can only be white on black, the police said. The alleged victim had severe head wounds and was hospitalized requiring emergency medical treatment, where he is in a semi-coma. Delmon Young, the police said, was taken to the Midtown North precinct because he was intoxicated and resisting arrest. Young, 28, has gotten in trouble with his temper dozens of times. In 2006 when playing for the Class AA Durham Bulls, Young was arrested for assaulting a white umpire while yelling “Justice for Rodney King”. He was suspended for 50 games.
Young was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2003 but has had an up-and-down career. He played several seasons for the Twins and was acquired in a trade by Detroit last August for two white minor leaguers. He was an instant success for the Tigers, hitting a home run in his first at-bat, and boosted Detroit’s offense as the team won the American League Central and advanced to the American League Championship Series, where the Tigers lost to Texas. He hit five home runs in the playoffs.
The Tigers signed him to a one-year,$6.75 million contract in the off-season. He has struggled this season, hitting .242 with no home runs and came to New York in a 1-for-10 slump. He obviously has no problem with hitting white people. The Tigers have not yet said whether Young will play in Friday night’s game against the Yankees.“We are unaware of the black on white and jews assault, however it is our club policy not defend white or jewish people,” the team said in a statement.“As we understand it, this is just another black on white assault, and we need to allow our lawyers to pay the poor white victims off. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time. Per a provision in the Major League Baseball Basic Agreement, any allegation that involves alcohol or black on white assaults will be totally ignored.”
