Payoff for housing lottery not what was promised

Full story: Newsday

When Lara Adman won an affordable housing lottery in 2003 to buy a home in a Melville development that would be a mix of homeowners and renters, she thought she had gotten the foundation of the American dream.

Really? Thats interesting. I am what some describe as "religious" and for public housing, I must endure the insult of being asked if I have been arrested every year at my review.

So much damned perversity in this world. The woman interviewer insists she is REQUIRED to do this.

Why is it that the decent people applying for HUD are gone over with a fine tooth comb, and asked all kinds of insulting questions, and mocked, but the shady characters slip through with nothing but a big phony smile?

IT'S DISGUSTING.

You are all correct the people who deserve the housing don't get it!! The people that do are demoralized, and the neighbors fear for their lives and their children. I live here I know!!

The Millenium Hills Housing Project was a failure. HUD and The Huntington Housing Authority, know this and do not want to admit it. The people who live here have been in fear for the past four years. Sadly many of us cannot afford to get out or we would have long ago. Those that are trying to get out have hit brick walls when trying to find out how to get their money back. We have found drugs and needles near our playground. We have complained since day one. Some of my neighbors ( almost all of them owners, though some renters too) have been more vocal than others. It has taken them 4 years and an armed robbery ( that was in the news LAST SEPT) for them to finally get camera's put in? Is Dr. Spencer kidding when he says they care about the community, and that we are safe here. Let Bob Fonte, or Dr. Spencer think about living here for a day and trading places with any one of the residents here. It should tell HUD and HHA something that those people are just talking a great politcal game and that they would never live here, even for a day. Also, no one here seems to know when those "suprise inspections" that are mentioned occur. The police know that this is the slums of melville, how come HUD and HHA can't seem to figure that out?

Living in fear every day, and if/when someone dies or is beaten up here, the blood will be on the hands of HUD and HHA.

We need to find ways to make this more known.. Perhaps posting this at the community center? or emailing this to anyone and everyone we know? Printing this out and giving copies to people in the development, having them post, and then giving that to Dr. Spencer and company?? The police and ambulances know this is the ghetto/slums and even they know the issues and problems that this "development" has caused and how unsafe this area is. That lady who works for the housing authority is useless and does not conduct suprise visits based on everything I've heard, and seen, even from people who work for Huntington.

I think, every time a renter or owner cause a problem and get evicted from the community should not be replaced by the HUD anymore. The house should go for sale not for rent anymore. I think over the years, the problem will be resolved itself. Otherwise, the problems will never go away. I think we should spend all our money to CAMERAS on each street to make the community safer instead of Spending $2000 for POISON IVY REMOVAL.(it has been done 2 times already). We could have gotten 4 more cameras instead. If you still do not know, look at the links below.

All those grants, all the taxpayers' money spent for the projects like Millennium Hills are pure waste if the result is putting people in danger.
The cute little project like this one looks good only on political speeches before the elections. The reality is that one day you get your home and you are so grateful for it, and the very next day you start to live in fear. Suddenly you are in a position of having to learn how to protect yourself and your family since all you hear about is criminals, armed robberies, sex offenders, drug activity and the list goes on - for 4 years I might add. Suddenly, the blessing becomes a nightmare and you think you made a huge mistake moving in here. The Police is in the complex constantly (thankfully) but the fear persists and builds up.
The government should rethink its idea of affordable housing like Millennium Hills for the sake and safety of its residents who are now trying to get out of the complex. The affordable housing, as much as it is needed, in its current form is just a trendy buzz word and a failure.

Poisin Ivy removal only done once!!! But I agree unfortunatly even if the poisin ivy had been removed twice it would not have even bought one camera!! There are more cameras coming WATCH but unless the politicians realize they thought up a fantasy land and for once try to rectify what they have done to inncocent people and children, they are going to have a might revolution on their hands because the residents are NOT about to take NO for an answer this time. WE WILL NOT BE IGNORED

Sadly I don't know all of the names of the "renters" which is where most of the issues are... In addition, not all of the people staying/living in a location are even on the leases, sooo how can we find out names?

I am a resident of Millenium Hills. I own and have been fortunate enough to live on a block with minimal issues. I suppose that gives me a false sense of security. I am thankful I had an opportunity to own my home and have a little headstart for my family. Especially when I see so many friends starting their married lives living with In Laws. BUT having recently become a mother, my concerns for my child's safety supercede my own. Will I live here when my baby is old enough to ride the school bus? I dont think so.
It is not every renter and I dont think the issue should be renters vs owners. It should just be about the criminal activity.
I brought the FelonSpy.com to some people's attention and see that it is referenced here. I have since discovered that this website may not be very reliable and should not be used to prove any points. If you type in the same address twice, it lists different names. It also lists names on the map where there are no homes- like in the ocean!

It's good that you live on a block with just a few problems, would you walk the streets alone at night without concern? Do you know about the armed robbery, drug raid, drugs in the park and on the street, the drug dealing, the fact that there are convicted criminals living in the neighborhood with governmental funding and that the other link is legtimate and true? Apparently if you wouldn't want your child on the bus, or playing with kids in the neighborhood, it's not a safe place..

i am the parent of a resident of this development and i have lived in the projects. i lived in Queens in one of the first "affordable housing' type of community.whats going to happen is all of the decent people will start to move out because of the crime and it will slowly be turned into a ghetto. one by one. all these politicians should shut upand put up now and clean this nightmare up for the majority of decent people living there. startactuallyworking for thepeople that vote for them or now against them . Bob fonti can you sleep atnight knowing what you created, oh yeah you can because you dont live there.

Millineum Hills actually is one of the better developmens developed by the Long Island Housing Partnership, although the rental portion is run by Town of Huntington. If you are having problems with this development, tell Peter Elkowitz you want action and you want HUD to enforce the one strike laws which will get the undesireables out. Don't let the selection criteria ruin this development. Peter needs to realize what they started and how to prevent it now in this development and in their future developments as they build mix use. I wonder how their Bayshore Project is on Fifth Avenue - if they are having similar problems. Organize and get your voices heard. Contact your Federal legislatures to put fire under HUD to get rid of the criminals.
