Can anyone give me details about a street riot between revelers and the HB police department. I'm told this happened about four years ago. I'd be happy to read the news account of this story if anyone knows where I could find it.

Thanks

Just a bunch of drunken kids that came from inland cities to blow off steam. It got out of control with some skin heads tourching a mattress on Main St. Police did not plan this nor did they chose to instigate it, however it was their job to break up the violent behaviour. Those kids still critisize to this day how their childish behaviour set a presidence for future 4th of July events. It has been a great place to safely hang out since. Go figure.

The OP Pro riots were Labor Day, August 31, 1986 (same day as the Aero-Mexico Plane crash over Cerrito's). There were cops all over the Downtown area, even though the actual riots were limited to the beach (excessive show of force). They even tipped a police car over.

The July 4th Riots had a much smaller show of force but was a bunch of drunken teens-twenties on 7th street, at either Pecan or Walnut. Was 3 blocks away and didn't even know it was going on.

I would like to speak with your grandfather. I would like to know who the officer was that rescued me in 1986 when he drove his motorcycle down the steps by the pier to save me after my bikini was violently ripped off by a few guys. Afterward the riots began. It had a ripple effect. Please email me if this is possible to speak with him. Maybe he can tell me who the officer was who rode down the stairs to rescue me.

I would like to thank him.

Was July 4th, 1992, about 75 or so people. A couch got set on fire and about 30 people were detained. Made front page of OC Register the following morning.

Everything was cool til July 4th, 1976.

Co-incidentally, the first year we got
someone formerly from L.A.P.D.

Cops in full riot gear lined up and
marched beating kids over the heads.
I saw it. They marched up Main from
the beach and in unison turned on
Walnut. I was a block away and kids
came tearing down the street screaming.
I grabbed a girl and she said the cops
had gone crazy and were beating people
over the head with billy clubs. I looked up and saw them turn the corner
in a line like robots. I ran into
a yard and pasted myself flat against
the building and stood there and didn't
turn my head to look til they marched
past.

Unbelievable!
The girl said it started when someone
threw a firecracker that went off over
a baby stroller.

I was violently attacked, and my bikini ripped completely off. If it weren't for the officer who rode down those steps I could have been injured far worse than I was. I don't think there's anything lame in wanting to thank the officer for risking his life and enduring the injuries that he did to rescue me. Try again?

Robbin!! You are a freakin' legend from the HB Riot. Those guys accosting you touched off the whole thing. Bunch of peopole say they have photos of you from just before in the contest and during the altercation . I was there and I saw what they did and it went nuts. Anybody who would call that a "small riot" is a fool. Flipped over burning cop cars is a big deal. Can't help you with the cop who rode down the stairs, but I still really want to see photos. Know of any?

I lived at 13th and walnut where the couch was set on fire in the middle of the street in 92. Man it look like a war zone. Cops were driving by and people were shooting bottle rockets and any kind of fire works they could get their hands on at them. I remember that year they brought the water tank out down town to squirt at people so they would go home. I was walking with a friend and got chased down for no reason. They were looking for anybody to chase that night. That night in '92 was brutal.

Actually a couch was not the only thing destroyed. Cars passing by were welcomed with a brick of firecrackers shoved inside the car. Taco bell umbrellas were ripped off the tables and carried down streets. Crowds were moving corner to corner with their fireworks and creating quite an impressive show. People got rowdy and non locals kicked in windows and picked fights. The people were mad because of the new law banning fireworks so this was a bit of a protest. Cops were swinging willy nilly at people running and serveral times the crowd ran through the cops like red rover. Rubber bullets and firehoses were sprayed.
