A 17 year old is considered a "child"? Cry me a river!...then there are many "children" behind the driver's seat of cars all over the states!

That's the problem!!! They aren't children. Society needs to stop feeling sorry for these people. As soon as their "children" turn 18 they are locked out of their parents homes to committ crime and go to jail! Then they are criminals!

If this law saves lives - it is a good thing. We have seen in the past family members kill members of thier family who have pushed them passed the breaking point with no where to turn. We have also seen the unmedicated mentaly ill kill or injure the family that is trying to care for them. This law gives these families a humane alternative to "dumping"

I think all of you need to read the article before commenting. She is bipolar and has a learning disorder, probably not of mental capacity to care for herself.

However, there at least used to be mental hospitals for that. You didn't need a safe haven law.

This law, as written in Nebraska, shows how dumb legislators are. Maybe it will become a model for Congressional action.(After all, now there is a federal nexus, as out of state parents are dumping their children in Nebraska, so the feds should take this problem off the state's hands. Sure.)

Actually, the article should read "...to consider changing the law."

People are a special breed of stupid if they think that this law applies to anything other than a baby. These "parents" should be arrested for their abandonment of their kids... not everyone is cut out for parenthood, but you don't get to cherry-pick your moments!

If this allows the kids to attend university on the state's dime, it's something every taxpayer should consider advantage of.

Agreed- not to mention the payment of health care costs, etc.

Problem: Mother will not be receiving any $$$ from the state anymore since she is 18 years old.

Answer: Just drop her off at hospital

I enjoy attorneys. Some of us don't have the luxury to play paddy cakes in a courtroom or in mediation because a few of us spent five years training how to use a scalpel.

If the girl is 18, then the woman has a right to ask her to leave, problem or no problem. What a stupid law.

I don't see the problem with this, the child needed help and will now get help.

I would assume that when the law was enacted it was taken for granted that the only people using it would be those desiring to get rid of babies, and especially newborns.

However since some have decided to use it to get of offspring much older than newborns, and even of some in their late teens, I hope the present trend does not get still more extreme. Since there is a guy in my neighborhood who I suspect would like to get rid of one of his daughters, and who I believe is in her early twenties, and I know he would definitely like to get rid of her boyfriend.

Fortunately, up to now, those in the scalpel business (or those on the receiving end of one) have needed me much more than I have needed them.

this is the biggest problem with 'parents', they refuse to believe that their children are just that: children. so many parents are afraid of being their parents that they become their kids friends. this hardly works, especially when these kids need direction

I agree with you and I'm stunned that few took it that way. If this averts a tragedy, its unintended consequence is a good thing. Get the young lady into the proper setting like a group home with a sheltered workshop. When we don't help people like the adoptive mom who was at her breaking point then the result will be bad on many levels.

Ed, I think the term for that is "Ambulance Chaser".
