Does anyone remember Shaker Day Camp, which was out on Old Mill Road? I attended each summer from 1968-1975, and have such wonderful memories of riding, swimming in Waterfall Lake, and arts and crafts up in the old house. The day camp ran from at least the early 1960's, and maybe earlier.
The place was owned by the Moritz family; a grandfather and his son, Gibson. I was good friends with Mandee Moritz, but I have not seen her since around 1984. The last time I saw the property in about 2004, it was a tree farm with many of the original buildings still there. Does anyone know what became of the park, and where I might find memorbilia? I fervently hope it didn't become yet another sterile development or office building complex. Thank you, Anne |

I went to Shaker Day camp around 1962 and 1963,
they had the lake, a lot of woods, the pool building, stables near the Moritz Home, the arts and craft building, a kitchen/dining building. In the woods North of the lake was an old decaying house in the woods. Southeast of the lake, East of the Moritz home and stables there was a little creek and waterfall, where i would catch crayfish. You can use google maps to zoom in on an aerial view of the property, on Old Mill Rd, northwest of I-480. The waterfall near the Moritz home is hard to see through the trees, the current view of the lake looks like it has been drained.... I can't seem to find out much about the old camp either, but it may have fallen victim to insurance costs and a highly litigious society we now enjoy.... |

My sister Mia and I went there as well. There is a Facebook group dedicated to it. Check it out!

Ohhhh yes, I remember that place...I went there for a couple of years in 1974 and 1975. My neighbor buddies and I used to pile into his mom's old VW bus and she'd drive us all out there. Didn't expect to find others with similar memories, but I knew there had to be others out there...

That's funny! I'm 45 years old now and I went there from around 1970 - 1975. I live out in the Twinsburg area now and a few months ago I asked my cousin about Shaker Day Camp since he went there in the later 70's. He told me it was off of Old Mill Rd., so I passed by there once on my way to work. There now a sign that says "The Brown Farm" but I'm not sure if I was at the correct address. I would love to go back there and check it out now!
