Its amazing how rightwing conservative they are until it comes to their own interests. If you listen to them its anti-goverment anti-goverment programs which are all socialist until they can get to the hog trough. Then they want the taxpayers to pay for their wells, waterlines, roads, powerlines, rodents and now grasshoppers.

In fact the farmer should do what the unions in the big cities do . Go on strike for a couple of years. When your back bone started rubbing against your belly you would see the light.

The governemnt can find the money to bail out the auto companies, banks and just about everybody except the farmer who produces the food people eat. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi... For the farmer the government writes laws to make it more difficult for them to survive. The government pours money into this disaster to aid the auto workers but could care less about the farmers. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi... The consumer still needs milk and meat but they are shunning the government owned cars our tax dollars are supporting and buyin Japaneese cars. Is this good for our economy? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/topdown/d... You be the judge who is taking care of and feeding America, some dude from New York or the hardworking rancher and farmers if this country.

You be the judge who is taking care of and feeding America, some dude from New York or the hardworking rancher and farmers if this country. After you get all done giving everyone else heck for taking from the goverment, you kind of ignore the fact that 99% of ranchers are totally right wing conservatives when it comes to working people and anyone else. I wouldn't bail out the auto industry either. Ranchers who didn't like any social program for anyone else like them for themselves. Independent make your own way, no goverment control, no unemployment, no help for anyone else. EXCEPT: When it comes to them. Then its a completely different look towards goverment - welfare rancher socialism. Gimmie gimmie gimmie. Electric lines, water lines, cheap goverment pastures, subsides for everything, land subsides, road care, cuts in taxes, right offs against profits, praire dog control and the list goes on. Now its let the taxpayers give them welfare to kill grasshoppers. Last year it was praire dogs, last winter they want help over hay, summer before it was goverment water lines, and paid for hunters over deer.

Gee I forgot the welfare dams, soil bank program, drought relief fund, sheep subsides and school bus to the front door. Nope ranchers don't believe in socialism just pure capitalism until they get to the hog trough.

Been some cattle missing through out the west. You should stick to New York, of course New York never takes welfare. It was Wall ST Thieves that put this country in the condition it is in. Preach to Wall St, let the ranchers and farmers continue to produce food for you ri eat.

I believe if anybody should get assistance from the government it should be these farmers. The grasshoppers will spread across the farm belt and devour the crops. This will cause the price of food to rise. This is one easterner who stand heel to toe with the ranchers on this issue.

I'm not from New York but from the Wyo/SD border and am a rancher but a Democratic rancher. I realize the posting shows me from somewhere in New York and I have no idea why. I probably am not going to convence you of the fact as you will think I am lieing, but I'm not. In addition to working the ranch I also work in a Coal Mine near Gillette, WY. I set and listen to the Wyoming ranchers who spend a major part of the morning setting in Elsie's Cafe bitching about democrats. Most have no use for any working stiff that draws some unemployment. Once done with their coffee and breakfest they head out in a one ton duelly diesel pulling a fifth wheel aluminum trailer. If I go to SD I listen to the same type bunch setting around cussing Democrats and looking for someway to get the taxpayer to pay for something all the while they bad mouth the guy on unemployment. Believe it or Not I don't care but its a fact.

Believe it or Not I don't care but its a fact. I was just in South Dakota , visited two friends one is a farmer the other a part cattle producer as a hobby but works in Hot Springs. I am sure some of what you say is true. People do that everywhere. However I live in California and and very familiar with the Bay area. I live in the Northern Part, also an Agriculture region. The Democrats in California are not doing things to hurt the california, intentional or not I don`t know. They have passed so many rules and regulations they have strangled the family farmer and it is all headed toward the big corporations. Vast difference in waht you are dealing with and what our farmers are having to contend with from the Democrats here. Now if you were to go to any coffe house in the Aby area you would hear the democrats saying the same thing about the Republican and farmers, all the while eating what they produced. My point to this is everybody seems to think it is the other guys fault. Now the grasshoppers. I don`t see how one guy can deal with it by himself. They move in swarms and will keep moving. It will take a collective effort to check them and they are all through the farmbelt this year. I saw them in the Springfield,SD area where I spent a couple days with my friend. In the long run this problem will efect the price of food in the market which will hit us all. I don`t know who should pay for spraying them, but it is going to have to be a collective coordinated effort. I know a little about grasshoppers and they can devour a crop if ther are enough of them. Can the Co-ops do it? Thank you for bringing this issue up,at least we will get some attention to it. I believe you are a rancher. It might shed some light on things in general if you checked on what the Democrats in California have done to our ranchers and farmers. A thread is running on it in Springfield. http://www.topix.com/forum/city/springfield-s...

For the most part I was poking some fun at my Republican neighbors to see if they would bring the matter up at the coffee shop. I too had grasshoppers in the hundreds everytime I took a step. Eating everything including weeds and trees. Anyway enjoy your day.

I am glad to see there are some liberals in the farm belt. I too am a very liberal democrat. I agree that these small town country farmers constantly run down the government and President Obama.
If they had to live off what earned without government help they would starve. They should be cut loose to make it on their own and if they go under then they can see what it like to live on unemployment. President Obama is trying to get this country on the right track and he is constantly cut down by the right wing which is very strong in the rural parts of the country. Cut off all government aid to the small time farmers and see what happens. They will crash.

They have no problem with evergreens, weeds, rhubarb and flowers. They seem to be able to spot green from way off and move towards that spot. I have sprayed around the ranch yard four times and have found them on the house and on the roof of the house and in the garage. Some seven foot evergreens was covered with them. When you walk its like a wave of jumping and flying grasshoppers moving ahead of you – hundreds of the buggers. The amazing part is that experts say that if a good hatch happens next year will be worse. I think I’m going to buy a shotgun or at least open the place up to grasshopper hunting with a shotgun.

I say all the farmers and ranchers go on strike for a year and let the rest of the country realy see how much we need them. Like my dad says "its the only business were you buy retail and sell wholesale." Maybe they could make a living for once.

Like I said the farmers need to go on strike, let the price of beef go to $10.00 a pound and loaf of bread to $5.00 then see what you have to say. You dont have a clue. The goverment susidized the ethanol producers to make a product that costs more to make than it sells for and no one wants. You wana bitch about the american farmer that feeds this country and barely makes a living while doing it.

I do a little farming down here in Arkansas, and I would like to say this: Without the American farmer there is no America.
Yet we continue down the slippery slope of importing food. Something like 15% of all we eat is now imported, while we take our food and put it in our gas tanks so to speak. Have we become insane or what?
Just recently visited Hot Springs, ya all got a real pretty place there. God love ya for your friendliness. and God Bless America.

This change of events in Argentia is bound to effect the world garain markets. They are now coverting from range fed cattle to feed lot production. Puting the range into raising other grains. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/... I also agree without the farmer we would be in a world of hurt all over the world.
