That seems like a reasonable charge, as long as we are now consistent and prosecute all individuals involved in school fights. School fights happen all the time at just about every school. Are we only prosecuting this one because it involved someone claiming gay bias, as if other reasons for fights and assaults make those fights not worthy of prosecution? Or is it only because it was recorded, as if non-recorded fights essentially didn't really happen and thus shouldn't go through the court system?

This is a very unfortunate situation. Those girls should have known better and should feel really sad that they are not surrounded by more diversity. Am i gay? No but we cannot judge people who are...that is not our job.

It was a stupid school fight. I think everyone is going waaaay overboard. I don't recall students being charged with assualt when they got in fights at school. Fights happen. Punishment is needed.. but this just got blown way out of proportion

Seriously? A "stupid school fight"? LMAO! Seriously, this was more than a fight. When you take the sick initiative to video tape it and put it on the internet, that is screaming for some type of psychiatric treatment. They asked for it, they should be locked away and put into some intense therapy.

Fight, attack, whatever... this kinda crap has been going on in schools forever. So now we are going to prosecute anyone who get's into a fight in high school? What's next, charging them with vandalism when they write on the bathroom walls? What a joke. Seems like our legal system has bigger fish to fry then a couple of high school girls.

I love how the lawyer says his client isn't "anti-gay" and yet that was the only excuse the girls gave for the attack.

(btw..born and raised in the states but moved to england)...and guess what..we have little 'anti social' orders, tickets we do for the yobs over here when they mis behave...might be an idea to pass to you yes ? Aw, poor VanderLaan and Longhurst. Just two Christian girls doing their duty for James Dobson and Jerry Falwell (RIH). Next we'll be punishing Muslims for exercising their freedom of religion by detroying things and killing people.

I believe that that this is a resonable charge. Yes these two girls did not agree with what the other girls beliefs were and it bothered them, but that does not give them the right to beat the crap out of her. They could of easily went to the school office and let them know what was going on. I know two kids that go to wayland and the school system supports and believes in any students safety. So if this girl was bothering them or doing things they did not like they should have told the principle or any teacher for that matter. There are better ways to solve a problem other than beating a person up. Remember this was not something that just happened on a last minute decision it was thought out very well for days. These girls planned this days or weeks prior to the incident. I really hope they have learned their lesson. I do feel bad that they are expelled but they need to pay for their consequences. As for the victim I hope she will come out of this Ok and not have to live her life in fear.

She'll take the attackers to Judge Judy's court, get $5,000 out of each family for assault. Easy $ for Her.

If the girls did not like the smooching then they needed to take their concerns to the principal etc....(no I am not gay). The girl that had gotten beat up also had to be aware that her sexual orientation and public displays of affection WILL always cause problems in public. That is just the way it is. No one has the right to put their hands on you. Whether you are fat, ugly. have red hair. black. white or gay. If you do. then pay the price!

Equal Protection Clause should be applied in this case. High Schools have fights all the time and no students were prosecuted. This is selective enforcement. What changed? All the fights in the State and no one has been charged except this case. It is a miscarriage of justice to me. I am not saying that the children shouldn't be punished because they are by being expelled. Just like others who fight in school. That is the precedent. The parents must not be active in these kids lives.

I just want to set the record straight for all the posters who say kids aren't prosecuted if they commit an offense in school. That is NOT TRUE. If there is a fight at a school that the administration deems to have been an attack (like this one CLEARLY was) then the local authorities are called in and if there is enough evidence then they are charged with assault. If someone is caught smoking--they are charged with an MIP. If someone is caught stealing the police are called and charges are filed. If someone defaces property the police are called and they are charged with vandalism of public property. I have been teaching for 10 years--and this has always been the policy and when I was a student in Indiana that was the policy there also. These girls need to learn that this is unacceptable everywhere. Including school!

We never hear of Juvi cases in the press regarding school related crimes. Something is very unbalanced in how these messed up children are being handled.

Bottom line here..you hit someone its assault. EVERYBODY knows that. We all have our rights & justice was served. Regardless if your gay or not. Nobody has the right to just start beating the crap out of you. They knew they would be in serious trouble. When I was in school, it was the same way. Kids got suspended back then for fighting too & smoking & drug use. The rules havent changed, they just got stiffer.

Your an idiot, in what context would 2 or more people sneeking up on one and beating the crap out of them be construed as a fight. It's in the Media, because the perpetraters of this attack were stupid enough to record it,and show it to the world.

Something is very unbalanced in how these messed up children are being handled. It has to do with the press picking and choosing their stories. Clearly! Video taping the fight, sexual orientation, girls fighting....blah. blah. blah. I am sure justice will be served!
