As a former employee it was disappointing to me when the students who participated in the Atterbury Job Corp program who attend to get an education and to clean up their life and all your efforts as a teacher are destroyed, when all the issues described below are in the way. I worked for Job Corp for approximately 15 months and after seeing and knowing the things that went on, I couldn’t take it anymore.

Back in September 2007 ended it all for me, my daily job of teaching and mentoring the teens, young adults ended when the stress peaked at my breaking point. Before I go into the reason I quit, let me tell you a little about the Atterbury Job Corp Center.

Highlighs of the story... A recent example of this is back in September 2007 when I left; another young adult took a machete and sliced open another young adult’s head, from forehead to the back of his skull while he was on the ground. Once the situation was brought to Mr. Hampton attention he told the staff members to clean up the blood before the authorities came. Once the authorities came Mr. Hampton told them the young adult fell and hit his head on the concrete instead of reporting the assault. This is just one case of assault, more has happen and they happen almost every week. The police from Franklin Indiana are called daily.

A woman named -------(edited by request) father works at Atterbury Job Corps Center and has for over 16 years… she emailed him and this is what he said…

"There is some truth to what the former teacher says, but, s/he has taken some things s/he heard and grew some conclusions that are not correct. Are there more students from the inner city? Yes, the Department of Labor has very specific income guidelines - all students must be economically disadvantaged. Where are the most of them? In the big cities.


Do the recruiters go out and seek these kids - not usually, the kids come to them. It's people like me that talk to groups, usually schools, civic groups, churches, social service agencies. Most of the students who come to Job Corps are referred by teachers, probation officers, pastors, social workers, case managers, parents, grandparents, counselors, etc. Can kids from the small towns and farms come? Sure, but the recruiter's offices are usually in the big cities because there are more prospects there, but I know the three in Indianapolis cover everything from Lafayette, Terre Haute, Richmond, Muncie, Kokomo and all the little town and bergs....a lot of Job Corps recruiters meet and interiview prospects at McDonald's, Libraries, WorkOne offices, etc.

I find it very hard to believe that the individual writing this article was a "teacher" at ANY institution , considering the horrible writing skills displayed in the article. If you weren't discouraged by the report of violence, you should certainly be horrified at the prospect of your child being instructed by an individual who is unable to put together complete and coherent sentences.

Haha... I wasn't the teacher in question I am on the one who can't put sentences together... But how I put a sentence together doesn't matter as long as the points were addressed....

My comment is on the teacher in question here on this forum and as i see it truth was eventually going to set course. Most of my time spent there was wandering most of my day and getting high near the cafe. A lot of my fun was sitting in and around the theatre with most of my kinda, which was those whom wear black all the time or as most called them freaks. I had actually enjoyed my time there but all in all a lot of fights and things i care not let out there for the moment at this time had happened. I had got a certification in the Sign Shop and i had loved my classes and my instructor was a wonderful person. But as i can tell and all i have see of the education that center had given me was of no use other then my GED which was not much of an accomplishment. So as i see it if at some point someone wants a little bit of information regarding matters of that sort i have answers. But i do wish to remain a ghost of this matter.....

I go to that center and I will tell you I go to that center and I have been there 2 years and 4 months and I have saw alot of things change and the staff try to cover up things like this all the time the cops are called all the time almost everyday

I am 20 Years Old and a highschool drop-out. I reached out and found a recruiter and enrolled myself in this program. The first week I was there I witnessed students being jumped by affiliated gang members, staff told us horror stories of Girls being raped and beaten, Fights that permanently scarred young people for life..ie students stabbing other students with scissors in the eyes.( Which we are not allowed scissors in dorms to this day) When I told my mother about these conversations, she of course called with concerns and coordinators and staff called us liars, and that before we run with information check the validity of it. The motto at our center is If you didnt see it...It didnt happen. The dorm staff are rude, unprofessional, and frankly dont give a shit about the students. The first week we arrived we were using toilet paper to clean bathroom floors. I speak for all of us who believe that is disgustingly unsanitary. MANY things need to change but not enough people come forward to bring light to the situation. I do believe that if run properly these centers could be an asset to our communities & Children. Until then those of us who are really trying to make something of ourselves have no option but to quit, which for me is not an option, or lay low and do the work and got the hell out.

I myself attended atterbury back in 87 and i see things have not changed not one bit. I personally have wittiness the assults and know of the first day in population and the as i call it the welcome to the dorm asskicking so to all of you that dont believe what goes on there, it was a life changing experince. dorm fights,lonesharking, hell i seen a person get beat down for getting a snickers on credit and not paying it by. And back then the snickers cost 50 cents and on credit it was a dollar,and a dollar everday you dont pay so after two weeks you owe 16 dollar. now that was then and i cant imagin what going on there now and thatt was just one of many things that went on there!

I Attend Job Corp nad trust when i say after reading what u all had to say nuting has really changed at the campus..But im in alittle trouble me and my roommate got into a agruement and we pushed each other around and people heard us. Got any R.A. and they broke us up..Now they got secturty and we did all the mess with statement and telling what happened..Now we got the 10 day out the program and these people are now saying a whole another story with we hit are R.A. and other mess..We are good students , My roommate has a month left and i was bout to take my ged test that same day..Atetrbury is joke and cause how me and my friend are getting railroaded.

I again would love to have this in story form with names and stuff... I will post it and send it everywhere. Positive and negitive people need to know the facts about how these places are....

I have read the comments about Atterbury. The students are the ones who need watched. They try to run the center. They lie and make up stories when are caught doing wrong. They know it all because they worked a week in a fast food joint. Famous words I'm grown. The students are rude and very disrespectful to both staff, and peers. The cussing is terrible, they steal form staff and other students. Just read the misspelled words and how the words are used in the above comments. The center has (many times) tried to have special events off center for the student. The student make it so bad the places (movies, places to eat, stores and so on DO NOT WANT THEM BACK. They cuss around familys, store personal, they steal, try to buy booze. The students wear their waist band down around their knees. Always holding their private part, to hold them up, and walk with their legs a mile apart. Talk about stupid. They want every one to see the many pairs of dirty underwear they wear. They spend time trying to rap, or draw dragons, gang signs, naked women, BUT they can not add 2 plus 2, or spell cat. The situation is there for them to learn,most do not want to learn. They are to cool.They are terrible. The staff try and try but you know the students know more than any staff.

Thanks Sue... I understand that it’s a 2 sided story and that the kids (young adults) may be rude, disrespectful, etc... but the truth of the matter is the center needs to set a better example and know that these are mainly adults who are forced to be there, and with the few who do want to be there to learn can't due to the inefficient RA's or monitoring that goes on. When you have staff bringing in dope, alcohol and more then we have a bigger problem than kids walking with their pants down... We learn by example and what are we teaching but to encourage the behavior. We need change on both levels.
