Blame the drivers. Blame the traffic department. If recent letters to these pages are to be believed, pedestrians play no role in pedestrian traffic deaths. Full Story

Ref: James Roller's ltr, "America cannot afford health care reform bill."

Think about it!

If the Health Care Reform Plan is so GREAT, why does it EXEMPT* the President, Congress, Senators, and their families?

No, Mr.Roller. We can't afford to ignore our uninsured Americans any longer. We are becoming a third world country and one way to improve our lot in the world is to take care of our own people. Obama is right; you are wrong.

The poor older lady who couldn't move fast enough to keep from being run over is at fault? It was her fault that she was killed? Gimme a break. In every civilized society, pedestrians are given the right of way, regardless of age or agility.

Over 3-5 months since Fort Weaver Rd. has been opened after widening, the H2 on ramp to East freeway was then altered to provide more lanes to drivers coming from Ewa side of the island. I understand the concept why this was done but have the Department of Transportation considered the volume of drivers/cars coming from Wahiawa and Kunia when they altered the lanes to this particular on ramp. Every morning when I drove to town to drop my kids of to school, it takes me 10 to 20 minutes to get to the freeway from Kunia road depending on the traffic condition. Getting to freeway takes 20 to 30 minutes when there is any accident. Is it possible if the middle lane to this on ramp can be shared by drivers from Kunia/Wahiawa.

That sounds like the job of the judiciary not the entire state goverment. Try reading a book on the government structure so the next time you submit a letter you can sound intelligent.

Like a drowning man gasping for air, the print version of the Star Bulletin runs a front page story on increasing CO2 levels in the wake of Climate Gate (manipulation of scientific data to get the results desired, not reflecting actual results). You guys really need to back off on this. First of all, methane, not CO2 is the gas to be concerned about and actual levels of CO2 are low as Nitrogen in the prominent gas in the atmosphere. Come on man, give it a break already.

In addition to what Mr/Ms Young stated, folks should know it is so much easier for a 150lb human to stop than it is to stop a 3000lb vehicle going 25-35 MPH. Some pedestrians (especially jay walkers) will step right out in front of you and expect you to stop on a dime. Bicycle riders, skate boarders, and moped riders are 100 times worse. These folks must think that there are no laws with govern their movements. There are - but never enforced! I put much blame on the lack of education and enforcement. Pedestrians, bike riders, skate boarders, moped riders all need to be educated on their responsibilities. Bikes need to be registered, skate boarders should be required to dismount their boards and walk intersections, and moped riders need to be licensed drivers and mopeds registered and have license plates. Unlicensed bikes and mopeds should be confiscated by HPD and sold at auctions. Unless the populace know that there are ramifications to their actions, they will continue to do whatever they want to do. HPD - be proactive! Parents - teach your children the right way! Schools - you have enough to do already. Traffic safety is the responsibility of the parents and police. Side note - folks in Hawaii are lucky they don't live in Germany where it is mandatory that all drivers have driver's ed, which costs thousands of dollars, plus pass a very difficult driver's test. But, if you want safe streets, rigid training and testing is the way to go.

Don't forget that those pesky pedestrianns and cyclists that are "in your way" are massively subsidizing your driving habit. Ever compared times of display for a green walk signal and a green light at any given intersection? Is it any wonder that woman was trying to rush through the intersection?

You must get around only by driving. You should try some of these things you suggest walkers, biker riders and others do and see what happens.

Why is stock price low at Central Pacific Bank?
.
CBB made many bad decisions. Bought into the derivatives thru their greed and lost. Their shares are worth nothing because they aren't worth anything anymore. It is a wonder that the FDIC hasn't taken them over yet. Anyone with their money in CBB would be wise to remove it.

Health care is not for the people!!! It is for the increasing profits the big healthcare conglomerates will reap as the taxpayers pickup the fare. Obama is just a ripe, young puppet along for the ride. Get It?

Vote out Obama's power next election by choosing Republican party. I am a Democrat turning to the GOP for sensible spending, not excessive spending the healthcare will do.

LOL ! No YOU and your phoney Odumba are Wrong ;)

Why should the Health Insurance of 87 % of the Nation be destroyed for those who have no insurance. Many alternatives have ben proposed to take care of those folks.

Odumba's solution is Socialism/Communism ;)

This clown may well go down in history as igniting America's 2nd Civil War.

Right On !

Anyone who has stood downwind of Kilauea's vents, and sometimes even people who live in Honolulu, 250 miles away, know first-hand how these emissions can affect air quality and life on the regional scale. It's a fact that Kilauea has been releasing more than twice the amount of noxious sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) as the single dirtiest power plant on the U.S. mainland.

Carbon dioxide is released when magma rises from the depths of the Earth on its way to the surface. Our studies here at Kilauea show that the eruption discharges between 8,000 and 30,000 metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each day. Actively erupting volcanoes release much more CO2 than sleeping ones do

I find it difficult to believe, in this day and age, that someone who purports to live in Hawaii would suggest a civil war rather than take care of the millions of our brothers and sisters who don't have health insurance. I suppose the fascists would also fight to prevent everyone from having a job, a roof over their head, food on their table, etc. What happened to the good old USA?

No, it is the fascitsts that are taking over private car companies and now want to take over the health care industry by dictating to people whether they are or not worthy of treatment.

Like the "sensible spending" on the Iraq and Afghan wars, and the massive tax
cuts for the rich and bailouts during the previous administration? Good luck
with that.
