What a waste! Hawaii sure know how to stop a good thing. Hopefully the Superferry returns one day. We in Hawaii live in a third world mentality. Some other countries in Asia have bullet trains, ferries, trams, subways, and much more. Lucky we live Hawaii, right? Anyway, good luck to the Superferry, it was good while it lasted. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Too bad, lost jobs "again", another venue to go to the other islands with your car, a better way for teams to travel "taking the team bus", and the promotions the super ferry gave, all good things. Just goes to show how small minded Hawaii is as far as taking care of the people's needs. Next we're going to build the rail system run it for @ a year then some radical group will complain then our chicken ----- leaders will shut it down, thus maintaining Hawaii's rep against business.

Way to go Hawaii Supreme Court. Once again proving Hawaii is "anti-business", the "Peoples Democratic Republic of Hawaii" will continue driving away needed business capital, with the expected results. Fewer jobs, fewer opportunities for Hawaii residents, and a continuing lack of understanding how decisions designed to appease a small but vocal minority (Enviromentalist wackos, Unions, Airlines) etc, can have unintended consequences that ripple throughout the islands. This decision will hurt the islands, and its future. And shame on the Legislature for not crafting a bill that would stand the inquiry of a very anti-business, liberal Supreme Court.

It is apparent the SUPERFERRY was NOT a a viable service. It failed to do the right thing. Breaking the established environmental rules. The politicians taxed the citizen/taxpayer $40 million for barges/ramps to subsidize the SUPERFERRY operations. The real costs/benefits were not disclosed.

What a crock! The Ferry to Lanai and Molokai cross the channels every day amid the whales. Hawaii is losing visitors now because of the economy and things like this.

Seems to me that the SuperFerry was a viable service, but not everything was done to make sure the original business plan was executed properly. There is a lot of blams to be shared in this debacle - the company, the legislature and the environmentalists. This ship was no different than other ocean liners and large container ships that have been going in and out of Hawaii ports for years. Too bad the jobs have been lost, tourists have lost a different way to visit the outer islands and most importantly, local residents have lost a convenient way to travel intra-state.

When will the person or persons at the DOT who did not perform the EIS be fired? They are the ones who caused this problem. Aloha Hard to the kooks at Hawaii DOT and the Hawaii Supreme Court. Be sure to thank to Maui surf nazis for their participation.

Congratulations, once again the State of Hawaii has hurt its long term financial growth by allowing the limited view of a few "NO CHANGE" special interest groups to bar Alakai from doing business in the state. It seems that the good ol' boy barge businesses are protected again at the expense of the people, agriculture and the bread and butter TOURIST industry.

enufalready wrote: Sad ... too bad that the company and the pols did not play by the rules. Yeah, it is too bad. But if only the Superferry people had a few more bucks to pass around to the right folks, they would still be in service. A lesson learned - pay those politicians what they ask for!!!! Every business that have had there way knows that appropriate payment must be made in order to survive!!!! Let this be a lesson for all businesses in Hawaii!!!! As the politicians would say, NO - we cannot be bought, but there are ways we would call it as "making us happy"!!!

Please wait...
What a lost. Opportunity which would have made a difference in the future of the State thrown out for all the wrong reasons. Like every stupid decision made in the past, this will come back to haunt the islands. If everybody was so bent over about killing whales, how about telling the military to leave Hawaii? What's the difference?

Can anyone tell me who truly benefits out of this? And how? It does not seem like anyone does to me.

The local airline companies, the barge companies and the labor unions all seem to benefit from the reduction in competition. Add your own to the list:

The Special Intrest Groups should have intervened when the first Jet Aircraft showed up years ago. Hawaii would be as it should be. NO Pilikia. Most of the Buses were trolleys ran with electrical current. No diesel smoke. Walk to the beach. Pick guavas or mangos along the way. Some times a star fruit or two. Some may consider this off topic but those were the nicest of times Never Look back Alakai, Fair winds,Blue Skies and folowing seas await your future voyages.

Aloha superferry we wish you well. Hawaii has been a bitter experience. You will be a deliverer of news to other states and countries Hawaii is truly not business friendly. You will be better off for it. The best to you and your crew. Truly success is there for you. Continue to push forward.

so the barf barge has left. about time. now maybe someone will investigate why so much public funds went to the company directly and indirectly without any research nor competitive bidding. sounds like someone made a lot of money bilking the public. so it goes.
