The current population on Oahu is unsustainable. That's why there is so little opihi and limu there. If Superferry allows outer islands to be plundered then all of the Hawaii will be impoverished.
Judging from the number of containers on YB barges going to both Maui and Kauai, and seeing the number of containers parked around Costco and Supermarkets, then I'd say that the current population on those islands is unsustainable too.
None of the islands grow enough food to sustain themselves, all of them import food from the mainland.
While the idiots are going around pointing fingers at the Superferry, Ag Land is being rezoned to residential areas beneath your noses, making it increasingly less likely that the islands will ever become self sufficient.
Stop getting distracted by red herrings and concentrate on the big picture if you really want to make a change. The Superferry is not stealing your Opihi, it's the Hawaii residents who used to take it on the airlines (and still do - watch how many coolers get checked in as baggage in Maui). If you want to protect Opihi, then set limits for everyone - not just Superferry passengers, but also those that fly or use barges to get their catch home. And yes, those limits will limit catches by Maui residents too, but it's either about protecting the Opihi or it's not - if you really want to protect it, then everyone has to play equally.
Sure, sitting in a council meeting trying to defeat a rezoning request or writing legislators to get legislation written and passed isn't as fun or exciting as sitting on a surfboard in front of the ferry, but are you in it for your own glory, or to make the islands better?
