Run wat? the State owns ur as*es! just like a dog occupying one dog-cage. Really want to be the "man?" staighten up your life, stop perpetuating your dead -end lifestyle to your own kids. You know WE, the Hard-working Tax payers cough up our hard earn money,at about $35g a year to keep ur clueless monkey as*es locked up. Plus wen you get out at 50 YRS OLD, you still goin be a broke ass, uneducated, welfare-sucking, non-contributor to an Island you guys supposedly give your life and represent.
Then teach them and don't insult them, that is how gang and violence started to beging with and you are not helping them either.

Even hardcore members are capable of changes given the chance. I know several gang leaders who serves nearly 20 years in Federal prisons and now working legit jobs earning nearly $70,000 a year.
They all have families and when I go and drink with them we just laugh at the stupid things we did then and we now keep our kids from getting involve with gangs. We send our kids to learn MMA or boxing so that they, too, can defend themselve.

Who do you think drove this thugs to form gangs, it was the community, yes, we all did contributed to it. No one likes getting picked on even if to get even with. The rich kids picking on the poor, locals pick on immigrants, or we all picking on the latest immigrants (micronesians). What do you think will happen if we keep picking on the Micronesians just cause 10 of them did something serious. The same with the Filipinos, the vietnamese, the other asian and none asian that came to Hawaii.
They do what comes natural, to group together for protections.
You will see this trend in every prisons.

Some will say, no I didn't contributed to it cause i didn't get involve, did you stop those people you had influence on? no... then you also took part indirectly.

Here is evidence that even hard gang members or leaders can reform given the chance.

I have heard of Malakai, I always thought his name was Molokai. The young generation had a run in with him and i was told he was rammed with a car at bishop Garden and he was a tough dude, i will give him that.
Romurs had it that after the car incident he was even more nutz.

Look at him now, he will likely earn more money, plus he and others are trying to make a difference trying to get the law makers to look into preventing gang or educating young generation just as Stanley "Tookie" Williams one of the original crip leader before being sentence to death.
He may not be in Tookies calibur but Malakia's agenda to prevent his kids from experience what he had to is commendable.

There are more gang reformed story that is not told by newspaper, many more.

Lol ....then the new youngganger will kill more gangers and more will be in jail or will be killed by the dead gangers gang. Why cant we make gangers useful and use them as mine detectors in the middle east with no special equiptment, but just use there own feet! Now thats a great plan.....

parents need to police their sniveling children
Most kids who joinned gangs have parents that work 2 or 3 jobs, plus the strick parents who were brought up under strick family rules or structure cannot use the same method, because it is now borderline child abuse.
When my brothers and I were kids we got licken bad for miss behavin. This all change at school where jerk think they are tough and bully the smaller kids around till we fought back.
Back to the parents thing, you are right that i do see parents out there who just let their kids do what they please and when they get into trouble they get all upset at their kids. Don't blame the kids for lack of guidance.

Almost every gang leader had this inmind "keep the peace" before he formed the gang, but after the gang is formed, it take a different road like the gang has a mind of its own.

I know this is an old thread, but I had to comment. Everyone keeps saying,"Its not as bad as the mainland." IT DOESNT MATTER if its not "as bad" as the mainland. There is a gang presence in Hawaii, especially on Oahu. I grew up in Waipahu, and I was affiliated with a few gangs. I saw some crazy shit growing up. Ask any teenager, and they will tell you how many of them are harassed on a daily basis by these gangs. They might not get shot up, but I think the mental/emotional/physical abuse is much worse than that. The gangs that were around when I was there were: Hamocyde, SOS, TCG,BBB,BBI,and YTK. WBC was called Waipahu Bodyboarding Club. They were just a bunch of beach boys, but they later turned into a gang and changed their name to "Way Beyond Control." We had many riots at Waipahu High school and also in certain neighborhoods. Im talking 50+ people fighting at once. I now am a father, and I live on the Big Island. I will never let my kids be exposed to the kind of life I had on Oahu. This is all truth.

It doesn't matter what gang rules the street, It's what gang rules the prison system. Because when all you gangs on the street go to prison, you all fall under ONE command.

Most of the original gangs on the street who are now in prison are the one making these gangs in prisons. The difference is that street gang affiliation don't really matter much, because unit is usually base by ethnics or cultures. So different gangs and often rival gangs form a unity or 1 big gang in prison.

I am not surprised that until today, most of you still don't
understood why most gangs had formed. Contrary to popular
belief that immigrant are the reason for all the gangs and their
criminal activities. I won't deny the facts that majority of the
gangs are indeed immigrants. However, their reason to forming
a gang is not a cultural related that thought to have been
brought overseas for the sole purpose of selling drugs, with a few
execption.
From my experience living in Kalihi from 81-2002 were brutal at
most part. Division amongst ethnic juvenile were prominent in
those times. Locals criticized immigrants, Samoans harashed
filipinos and asian, and soo on. Fight were a constant occurence, often for no reason, and some to insure dominance over others. No one taught us to understand
our differences, however for most of us we were taugh to hate
base on others past experiences. As a result, juvenile of
the same ethnic, tired of being singled out and harrassed by
others decided to grouped together as security, which over time
proved very effective. Thus resulting in gang for security reason.
Curbing the gangs.
We need to understand that, our juvenile regardless of ethnicity
deserves to be treated equally. We also need to take in
consideration the hormonal changes our teens goes through
that often conflicts with their better judgment.
Another very important thing is to teach our children to accept
and respect our differences and that it's okay to be different.
Just may be we all can participate in curbing all the hates.
This BEAUTIFUL ISLAND we call HAWAII is just too small to be
hating each other.
you got it on the money

Easy way to solve the gang problem here: deport them. If people want to engage in gang activity, ship them right back to the philippines or micronesia or whatever sh*thole they came from.

You sir are wrong, every event is cause by another event and everything has a starting point.
You were not in a gang and probably never experience being in one where you will learn first hand experience why gang formed.
So you judge this people because of where they are, I can tell you that even in the world of profesionals, they are worse than some gangs with the exception of some of the most brutal gangs out there.

We need to keep on open mind and understand what we are doing wrong and understand why we keep having the same problems (gangs) generarion after generation.

Many years ago when we used to love dancing in the public park, community hated it and put a stop to it and that also lead to a different activity, gangs, instead of encouring it in a CONTROLLED enviroment.

Some of these gangs members are very angry youth, instead of taking the time to understand why they are angry, ignorance just label them as bad, so they continue to do bad things and learn to accept that this is their reality.

If you look you will see many former gang members who reformed from many walks of life, some risked death in doing soo, they show such courage that many of us would not confront or can't.

I am a former gang member, the only reason why we had to be rough and aggresive was to keep the other gangs from messing with us.
Unfortunately they had the same intention and we bound to colide.
The question is, where did these hate and devision came from? Why soo much hate that gang had to formed? where was all the parents then? Why don't we all teach our children to accept everyone as equal. As a former gang member, i teach my kids to respect others, and I never pass to them to hate others who hated me.

It is funny how some of the grand parents quickly blame gangs for doing what they thought was right for protection. they never realized, that they could have teach their kids to respect others as equal and maybe could have prevented gangs from forming.

Let us take MS 13 for example, the community quickly responded to send them back to their home country, our goverment did. What happen next, we will regret for asking. MS 13 has become soo brutal that they grew stronger and spread even quicker and eventually making their way to Hawaii. We can thank those who suggested idiot suggestion. Watch some gang documentary on some of the top 10 gangs in our country.

We have to be greatful that gang in Hawaii are not killers with a few exception. Most of them are fighters, come on we live in Hawaii where we use our fist to do the talking.

In regards to the USO Family, I came across several of them and I don't even know them and they are actually very cool and respectful. They don't brag and don't bother you unless you act up infront of them. I walked up alone in the dark and there were 10 of them, i expected to get attacked but no they said wassup SOLE! and I am not even Samoan and they went back to their drinking.
They didn't attack me cause I showed them respect in their own turf. It is all about respecting others, none of us want to be disrespected, ever.

Cops, we hated cops then. They abused their power or think they were above the law I can give you many example but I rather not waste my time.
Instead I will give you one, We used to love going to tantalus to have harmless fun to keep ourselve busy instead of gang activities. Police were always called and they would treat us like we are less of a human, purposely trip us while handcuf, for what? nothing. Instead of doing their jobs, they threaten us and to me it seems more like a vendetta.
We grown to hate cops then, but luckly changes were made and cops now a days are more respectful, but the tide has turn for the worse, the civilian are now abusing their right that puts police in harms way.

With these, I now know the problem was never the gang, but the hate and ignorance. Why is it soo hard to respect your fellow man and women? why is it more important to us to be respected?
Why can't we give the respect so that others can respect us in return?
If you all really want to stop gang, understand why it happen to begin with before it is to late.
