By now it is clear to all thoughtful persons that the elevated, steel-wheel solution is the best way to move forward on this exciting new transit option. There really is no reasonable alternative. Similarly, there is no benefit to delaying this wonderful project which promises significant employment and economic benefit. Many on this Topix forum are obviously the lowest level of citizen, unable or afraid to debate the merits of the system honestly. They resort to angry but anonymous rants that contribute nothing, as empty and useless as their lives. Those with self respect, brains and optimism support the rail system and our courageous Mayor who refuses to yield to the dull mooing of the masses - the public school element as it were. Billions for economic stimulus! Imagine! How wonderful we have this opportunity and how wonderful that our Democrat leaders are so wise. Go rail!

It's simple, really.
There was a vote. People voted FOR rail. Elevated, steel wheel rail. There was a vote and the people have spoken.
The rest of you can now shut up. The deal is done. The issue decided. The will of the people has been expressed!

Mike wrote: A 300 percent more chance of death by car on Oahu, whether driving or being hit by one, based on one death per day is now increased to 0.00033 percent (or 3 X 0.0000011 percent). This is still just a sub-1 percent chance of death. Those odds are still good enough for people to take the chance of driving. Highway safety enhancement are certainly worth every penny since they do help save lives. Again, most people are more than willing to have their tax dollars go to towards these things on Oahu since most people here drive. Most people do not want to invest $6 billion in a rail system that misses key areas (UH, Waikiki and Ewa Beach) and does not have sufficient parking spaces near rail stops to support West Oahu commuters. Would you buy an elevator system that stops on the 20th floor of a 30th floor building? Would you buy a house with not even one parking stall? <quoted text> Even if assumed correct, your calculations do not reflect the societal impacts. They apply only to your individual decision to risk your life. Rail Pandemic gave the relative figures in rates of fatalities per passenger miles, a standard way of measuring safety. These figures translate to more than 40,000 deaths on US highway, more than 600,000 highway deaths in the world. You claim that this carnage is acceptable TO YOU! Fine, but you are not the ultimate judge. All factors (including safety) must be considered. But you persist to dismiss it because it does not support your biased position.

Lets Do It

Mike wrote: Buses currently go through lots of neighborhoods, yet only about 10 percent of the people here use them, with the other 90 percent choosing to drive. This low usage should be a big red flag. Do you really think car drivers will want to wait for a feeder bus to take them to the rail station? I doubt it. They would rather drive to a parking structure near the rail station and park their car. Here's an example: When locals use air travel, most people park their cars at the Honolulu Airport parking lot. They do not catch a bus and get dropped off. Reason is they want access to their cars directly at airports and rail stops. They don't want to be stranded at the rail stops or airports. This is why parking structures near rail stops are a key component to a successful rail plan. Mufi's plan does not have enough of this important component. <quoted text> Where do you get this "most people park" at the airport? Have you ever seen people getting picked up outside the baggage claim? As for daily routines, the majority drive because they have no reasonable options. Buses are slow, crowded and stuck in traffic. Only 20 years ago the majority of adults (including medical doctors) smoked tobacco. Yet, now that people learned of the health dangers, most people do not. Given true information, people change their behavior. According to your thinking, when someone introduced metal tools, you would have said, 99 percent of the people use stone tools and we'll still be in the stone age.

The deal is done. The issue decided. The will of the people has been expressed! Hey, is that you Mufi? 'Elevated' wasn't even part of the question on the ballot. Only 170,000 out of over 900,000 residents on Oahu voted for steel on steel rail. Over 150,000 voted against the multibilliondollar rail scam. The non-stop pro-rail propaganda advertisments brainwashed most of the stupid voters that did make it out to the polls. The 'steel rail' was forced down our throats from the beginning by the taxpayers funding of the steel rail carpetbager 'experts' from overseas. Taxes are now raised to new highs and will only increase even higher in the near future to pay for this failed rail boondoggle to nowhere.

Has anyone stopped to think about this...if you took the outer islands maui, kauai, molokai, lanai, hilo and kona, then the windward side of oahu...that would just about apply to these factors that they too will pay for the rail thru their taxes..the main question is....none of them will be able to access the rail...will they want to pay for something they are not going to use?....Wildman.

Another point in fact is that these islands named as well as the windward side make up more of the poeple not using the rail rather than the ones that will be using the rail...total perentage would be higher not using the rail......wildamn.

How Many Die wrote: <quoted text> Highways are 300% more deadly than rail.
Incorporate this fact in the evaluations. Oahu has no rail system but it has a public bus system. Rail is not-yet-approved by the Feds. The 20 mile rail boondoggle will cost over $6 billion dollars if built for the current Oahu bus users. Only 10% might use a future rail on Oahu, but 90% of the residents today use cars and only 7% currently use the bus. A Volvo can also greatly reduce the slight chance of dying in a car accident. Driving is safe if you use caution. Trains kill people too... Do you watch the recent world news events? Open your eyes and notice our brave military men and women are being killed daily by terrorist suicide bombers, roadside attacks, and RPGs. Dear Mufi, Skip the multibilliondollar cost of the rail to nowhere, ride the bus or buckle your seatbelt, fix the roads, and lower our fricken taxes. Thanks
